We are reminded of our position in the here-and-now, always on the edge of the future, which, for Christian believers, advances steadily toward the consummation of God’s plan, both for us as individuals and for the entire created order. In today’s Gospel, Jesus relates a parable about the managing of their master’s resources by some servants in view of an eventual accounting. Jesus clearly likens their situation to ours, as stewards of God-given ‘talents’: whereas a ‘talent’ in Jesus’ time was a specific sum of money, the very word has entered our language as a metaphor for attributes or resources of personality, ability and potential. Among these gifts of God are the advantages arising from faith and from our call to new life in Christ. That call puts into perspective our responsibility for properly regarding our ‘talents’: they are meant to be used, not only for our personal benefit but also for the glory of God and in service of the general good. The focus of the closing weeks of the liturgical year is on the inevitable day of accounting, whether we interpret it as the occasion of our passing from this life or as the ‘end of the world’. The prospect of judgment should not fill us with dread, however, or make us obsess over its unpredictable timing. Rather, Jesus casts the lesson of the parable as an appeal for prudence: not knowing “the day or the hour” of our judgment should not really matter, if we are consistently trying to live by the guidance of Jesus’ teaching and example. Even if, as St. Paul writes, “the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night” - not likening God to a thief, but referring to the fact that there is no predicting either the time of our death or the day of the Lord’s return in glory we know that we face an accounting. That conviction should keep us prudently attentive to being ready, always, for what we know is going to occur at some point in our future. It is the prudent exercise of our ‘talents’ and use of our opportunities for purposeful living that the Book of Proverbs praises in “a worthy wife.” Seeing one’s life in the perspective of an ultimate accounting for the gifts with which we have been endowed, should lead one to a similarly praiseworthy reputation and lessen any fear of that judgment. Alive as the Body of Christ, we seek to live, always and faithfully, in expectation of His coming “to judge the living and the dead.” During the recent retreat that I attended for priests of the Archdiocese, Coadjutor Archbishop Hebda complimented our St. Michael and St. Theresa Youth Ministry (STMTYM) and its director, Rich Donovan, as examples of positive engagement with the young members of both parishes. I heartily agree: it is one of many bright spots at St. Michael’s, and I acknowledge the STMTYM members and staff who will receive Youth Ministry Awards at the Cathedral Basilica in Newark today: teens MaryKate Winter, Greg Reilly, Victoria Perdigao, Matt Pericone, and adults Kevin and Valeria Downey. Keep up the good work -- God love you! Msgr. Tim Shugrue ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Note: One of our Sunday Masses will be televised on TV-35. Viewing times are on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The taped Mass will be from the previous week. Also, our Mass will appear on the TV-35 website. Note: If you have an affiliation with the Mass intention and would like to present the Offertory Gifts, please see a Minister of Hospitality (Usher) before Mass. Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK…. “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much….” (Matthew 25:21) God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously give back with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. AS FLU SEASON APPROACHES... While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the coming winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the spread of serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed anxiety about risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the opening introductions at Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an effort to reduce this anxiety, we will place hand sanitizer on the tables flanking the doors at the church entries, for use as an extra precaution. And it is important to repeat that anyone who feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing, should refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion. Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to shake hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of a person’s feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can convey the proper attitude of mutual respect and affection. MEMORIAL DONATIONS We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.
