Thursday, January 1, 2015, we celebrate the
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, a Holyday of
Obligation. The Vigil Mass is Wednesday, December 31, at
5:30 p.m. Masses on Thursday are at 9:00 a.m. and 12 Noon.
This Sunday after Christmas reverences the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In today’s passage from St. Luke’s
Gospel, we leave the events surrounding the Birth of Jesus
and enter that long period about which the Gospels are silent the years of Jesus’ childhood, youth and adulthood prior to the
start of His public ministry. Luke says only that “the child grew
and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God
was upon him.” In this Feast, the Church acknowledges the
implications of the total embrace of our human nature when
“the Word became flesh”: Jesus was born into a family, the
essential environment for our growth as persons into the
fullness of our human identity. Classical Christology sees in
Jesus both complete divinity and complete humanity. The ‘how’
of this unity (known as ‘the Hypostatic Union’) challenges our
understanding, but we acknowledge Jesus’ obedience to the
ordinary patterns of human development. We honor the unique
structure of the Holy Family and the contributions of Mary and
Joseph in creating the environment in which Jesus grew to
manhood, learning in that blessed ’school’ the traditions of His
People, above all how to listen as a man for His Father’s voice.
In honoring the Holy Family we profess faith in the Mystery of
the Incarnation, Jesus’ total embrace of our humanity.
The Feast calls us to further reflection. Beyond depending only
on the DNA of our biological distinctiveness, our character as
humans develops in response to the interplay of personalities
that we know as family - the basic social unit capable of taking
many forms, though its template in the Church’s eyes remains
the stable community that we understand to be God’s intent for
a permanent union of man and woman, based on mutual love
and open to the procreation of new life. The recent session of
the Synod of Bishops, called by Pope Francis to consider ‘The
Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World’, affirmed this template, building on the teaching
of Vatican Council II that it describes the ideals to which all
expressions of ‘family’ should aspire, for the good of all their
members. But the Synod recognized that growing numbers of
Catholics often are challenged, by circumstances beyond their
control or intention, in trying to conform to this template. That
doesn’t mean the template should be abandoned: it remains
important, practically speaking, to honor the ideals it embodies
by pursuing them to the fullest possible degree. For its final
session next October, the Synod has asked bishops to solicit
input from God’s People to answer questions that need further

parishioner forum to discuss the report and questions in light of
shared experience. Alive as the Body of Christ, we have a duty
to help the Church nourish all efforts toward genuine family

your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or,

MEMORIAL DONATIONS
We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers
for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used
for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary
Candle. These items may be donated in memory
of someone or to mark a special occasion. A
donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and
sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the
weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR
THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace
various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for

and we would be happy to add your input about what the

ST. MICHAEL TECH TEAM
We are starting to put together a permanent Tech Team. The
goal is to enhance Worship Services by providing solid and
consistent Audio, Video and Computer support. The Tech
Team assists with the design, operation and maintenance of
hardware and software for a variety of applications for the
St. Michael Community. Members are Adult and Student
volunteers.
Current Activities:
 Set up and operation of Sound equipment at the Noon
Mass.
 Sound check for balanced volume and proper coverage.
 Set up and operation of Video equipment.
 Set up and operation of Computer and Software.
 No experience needed - we will train!
 Time commitment can be weekly or monthly.

SANDWICH PROGRAM --Drop-off sites this week are:

whom God’s favor rests ! (Luke 2:1-14) Shine like Jesus today and

St. Joseph’s. Sandwiches are dropped off early Monday morning.
MONTHLY FOOD COLLECTION -- for Cranford Family Care will be at
all Masses this weekend and next. Needs for the month include:
PB&J, coffee instant and regular, sugar, juice boxes, granola bars,
and instant mashed potatoes. During the Advent season share some
of your home baked goodies with the wonderful families at CFC.

POPE FRANCIS ON THE HOLY FAMILY
“Today our gaze on the Holy Family lets us also be drawn into the
simplicity of the life they led in Nazareth. It is an example that does
our families great good, helping them increasingly to become
communities of love and reconciliation in which tenderness, mutual
help, and mutual forgiveness is experienced. Let us remember the
three key words for living in peace and joy in the family: “May I”,
“thank you” and “sorry”. In our family, when we are not intrusive and
ask “may I”, in our family when we are not selfish and learn to say
“thank you” and when in a family one realizes he has done something
wrong and knows how to say “sorry”, in that family there is peace and
joy. Let us remember these three words….. I would also like to
encourage families to become aware of the importance they have in
the Church and in society. The proclamation of the Gospel, in fact,
first passes through the family to reach the various spheres of daily
