Scripture today uses a feast or banquet, a communal event, as
an image for definitive encounter with God. Isaiah describes “a
feast of rich food and choice wine” as a sign of God’s covenant
-love “for all peoples”. The prophet sees the feast on a
mountaintop, traditional place for solemn meetings with God:
Christian thought sees it pre-figuring the ‘banquet of Christ’s
sacrifice’ on the ‘mountain’ of Calvary. Jesus tells of a king’s
wedding feast for his son (the Messiah’s banquet with His
people), which those who were originally invited fail to attend.
Their dismissive rudeness leads the king to open his feast to all
who are willing to come: but he is offended by one who arrives,
eager for a meal but not caring to honor the occasion by
donning a proper “wedding garment”. The parable speaks of
God’s generosity in broadening His invitation to be inclusive,
but teaches a lesson about the attitude with which to accept
God’s graciousness. Jesus seems to say that, while all are
welcome in the house of God - in Whose eyes there is no strict
‘dress code’ - yet as an expression of thanks for an invitation to
the Lord’s feast, and out of respect for fellow guests, attention
to proper outward behavior reveals the attitude of one’s heart
and mind.
I know the subject can be explosive, and I realize that it is not
the main focus of the Gospel parable, but I think it worthwhile
to reflect a bit on the notion that, when invited to the king’s
feast, one should dress appropriately. Each summer we refer
to the value of modesty and a not-too-relaxed look at Mass, but
that applies year-round. Seeing Sunday Mass as our invitation
to the “wedding feast”, we may ask if the way we appear at
Mass may at times be too casual, leaving an impression that
we see the Eucharist as just another item to check off our ‘to
do’ list. Certainly I do not suggest an artificial standard of
ostentation - the goal is not to impress God, Who sees the
more relevant attitude with which we come to worship, or each
other. But in a communal act of prayer, how we appear (neat,
clean, modest) and how we behave (joining together in prayer,
song and gesture) should be clearly respectful of the sacred
setting and of the Body of Christ alive in the Assembly. They
are ways we signal to one another how we appreciate what we
are about and the importance we attach to it. It is fine that one
should be comfortable at Mass, and not overly concerned
about one’s attire or appearance - ‘Come as you are’ validly
interprets God’s expectation when it refers to one’s sincerity of
heart. But it can seem at times that Mass is just a stop on our
way somewhere else, where a ‘dressed-down’ look is more
appropriate. It is a fair point for reflection, like the (occasionally
understandable) practice of arriving at Mass late and leaving
early. That would also offend one’s hosts at an actual wedding
feast! We do well to ponder two questions from Jesus’ lips:
“How is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?”
and “Could you not keep watch with me for one hour?” God

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK…..
“And my God will supply every need of
yours…” (Philippians 4:19)
God really does provide for those that are grateful and
generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a
stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just
coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for
just one month -- be generous with your gifts of time, talent and
treasure and see how God provides for your needs.

AS FLU SEASON APPROACHES...
While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the coming
winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the spread of
serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed anxiety about
risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the opening introductions at
Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an effort to reduce this anxiety, we
will place hand sanitizer on the tables flanking the doors at the church
entries, for use as an extra precaution. And it is important to repeat
that anyone who feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing,
should refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion.
Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to shake
hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of a person’s
feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can convey the proper
attitude of mutual respect and affection.

ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE
On Saturday, November 1, 2014, at our parish Mass at
5:30 p.m. we will remember those relatives and friends who
have died during this past year. Their names will be read during
the Liturgy for the Commemoration of All Souls. (It will be the
Sunday Liturgy). Friends and relatives of those who have died
will be invited to this special liturgy and ALL members of the
parish are encouraged to attend.
The pictures of all parishioners who have died in the past year
will be placed on a Wall of Remembrance in the main lobby of
the church. A Book of Remembrance will be placed in the
lobby also in which you can record your loved ones’ names.
During the Octave of All Souls Day, we will continue to pray for
all our deceased family members and parishioners. You may
add the names of your beloved using the envelopes sent to
you, some of which will be available in the church lobby.
