10 Years of APEC
Ten years ago, a handful of Texas industry leaders formed APEC (Aquatic Professionals Education Council) to provide information to both regulators and legislators, and pool industry members.
We have successfully fought many issues and bad policy ideas. We
believe that, in general, what is best for the consumers of Texas will
also build a strong and vibrant Pool and Spa Industry in Texas. In
past legislative sessions, we have succeeded against dozens of bills
that could have hurt the Pool and Spa industry. We strive to be ready
and proactive when possible threats to the Pool and Spa Industry
pop up in Texas.
This year, we have heard more rumors of more possible issues facing our industry than in ANY previous legislative session.
We need your help. We do not know if any, or all, of these issues will
become bills in 2015. We watch for issues coming before the LegisFrom left: Kevin Tucker, Ariana Pettigrew, Rick Beaubouef, Becky Clay- lature and related State Agencies- however, just like the VGB Act

can predict today. After 10 years, Texas state agencies and legislators often ask our
opinion-BEFORE they present a new bill or regulation.
So even now, behind the scenes, we have helped to
form supportive positions for the pool and spa industry
in Texas. WE NEED YOU, NOW.
In addition to our policy efforts, APEC has
expanded its mission to educate industry members
and general consumers about other industry issues.
We partner with ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of
Texas) to spread the word that pool owners can help
conserve a vast amount of electricity by simply turning
pumps off for 2 hours during the hottest part of a
Texas summer day. This allows critical relief to an aging electrical grid and can help prevent major brown & blackouts (and saves the consumer money). APEC is also actively
monitoring the drought situation in Texas; and we are keeping our members & consumers up to date with local water restrictions. Finally, we also have been offering professional development trainings at our APEC Business Summit, which coincides with the
Southwest Pool & Spa Show in San Antonio each January.
As many of you have heard me say before, we need a little of your time- and a
little of your money to make all of this work. If anyone has questions, please call meKevin Tucker at 512-417-8103. Like all of our APEC board members, I am
an unpaid 100% volunteer for APEC. Please join us and become a member
of APEC today!! www.APECTexas.org. We are the Swimming Pool Industry’s united voice in Texas, and we are proud to represent our members to
the greater community.

RO for Cleaner Pools
RO technology helps treat & conserve swimming pool water
October 9, 2014 published by Water Quality Product
BY: BRUCE WETTSTEIN
Systems such as the Puripool Process utilize
RO to keep swimming pools clean while also
conserving water.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is becoming a common method for treating residential drinking
water. While many consumers know RO best
for its use in desalination, it is also effective
for treating water quality problems in the
home.
RO reduces the amounts of organics, inorganics, bacteria and
particulates found in water, as well as other solids and salts.
The process has been refined to address the hard water concerns and sanitary needs of swimming pools, with technologies
designed specifically for use with residential and commercial
pools.
System Basics
RO is based on the process of osmosis and involves the selective movement of water from one side of a membrane (a tightly
wound composite) to the other. To make the process work, high
pressure is applied to the feedwater, forcing it through the membrane. Because contaminants do not move with the water
across the membrane, purer water collects and is captured on
the other side of the membrane. The purified water that accumulates is drinking water quality and is sent back into the swimming pool. High pressure is necessary to separate purified water and contaminants and to ensure efficiency and minimal water waste.
The pressure required is based on the type and concentration
of contaminants in the water. Supplying more pressure than
required to the contaminated water provides better separation
and a higher production rate, but can result in fouled membranes. Care is needed to find the optimal balance between
recovery and failure of the membranes (fouling). This is one of
the largest hurdles to overcome when building this type of system.
Removal efficiency often is described using the term “rejection
percentage,” which is the percentage of a particular contaminant that does not cross the membrane. While this information
is critical, rejection percentages do not tell the whole story. For
example, the rejection percentage for nitrates can be as high as
90% with some systems, indicating that the membrane is highly
efficient in rejecting them. It is important to know not only rejection percentages, but also incoming pollutant concentrations, to
effectively reduce contaminant concentrations in
the water to safe levels.
Ensuring Success
Basic components of an RO system include a
prefilter to remove fouling agents such as rust
and lime; an RO module containing the membranes; an injection system capable of neutralizing scale and chlorine; and various valves, including a shutoff
valve that stops the water flow when the system shuts down
after processing. The system also must provide for waste flow
to carry away the brine solution (roughly 15% of the pool water)
to an approved drain location.
Properly sourced components are critical to handling the unique
characteristics of swimming pool water, and the different water
conditions and needs of each pool, and to maximize efficiency
and minimize water waste in the brine stream. While not required, a remote monitoring system and on-board power are
helpful when utilizing RO in the swimming pool industry.
To ensure peak performance, RO systems require regular maintenance and replacement of various components. Prefilters and
injection chemicals need to be installed to protect membranes;
the length of time between changing prefilters will depend on
water quality, especially the concentration of solids. The contaminant concentration, membrane rejection percentages and
efficiency all determine when prefilters should be replaced. RO
membranes typically last three to five years, depending on operating conditions, membrane type, and prefilter and injection
chemical performance.
One example of this type of system is the Puripool Process,
created by Pool Services Technologies Inc. The company has
built and operated RO trailers for the swimming pool industry
since 2009, and has conserved nearly 24 million gal of water in
the San Diego area alone. The process is also currently in use
in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (through Weber Pools) and Lake
Havasu City, Ariz. New operators will soon be offering this service in Las Vegas and the greater San Diego area.
As drought conditions continue, RO technology for pools is
poised to gain acceptance and be available in many more locales, proving that safe and healthy water for the swimming
pool industry is critical, especially in times of limited water availability.

FLORIDA WATER PRODUCTS supports NORTH HOUSTON IPSSA for a Membership Drive!!
On September 19th Florida Water Products (Conroe Location), hosted a "Customer Appreciation Day / IPSSA Membership Drive" STEAK Luncheon ... YES that's right, FREE
STEAK LUNCHEON! From 11am-3pm the generous and
gracious staff of FWP Conroe celebrated their customers by
grilling steaks, and giving away many great door prizes! FWP
Owner Mike Blue and his team have been great supporters of
our new North Houston IPSSA chapter since day 1! During the
customer appreciation day, North Houston IPSSA was there in full
force with all its members handing out IPSSA membership brochures and talking to pool service companies, letting them know
the great benefits IPSSA has to offer! Even though Houston had
near record rainfall the past few days prior to and the morning of
the event it was still a great success. More than 60 steaks were
served and North Houston IPSSA has four potential new candidates! Along with FWP and IPSSA North Houston, many suppliers and I'm sure I will miss a few... sorry... (HASA, Pentair,
ZODIAC, VAL-PAK, Hayward, PRO-tech, ECOVA, Pleatco) were
also on site supporting the day and donating prizes for give-aways! The day was a true collaboration in supporting each other
and IPSSA.

Last year you helped us raise enough money to give
over 2000.00 dollars to charities such as the Joshua
Collingsworth Foundation, Abbeys Hope, and The Clay
Foundation. Thank you very much. This year our
chapter hopes to raise even more for the foundation
families and their incredible work for Drowning Prevention. The NDPA (National Drowning Prevention Alliance) is in March of 2015 in Dallas TX. I look forward
to seeing some of you sponsors there. I will be sending
out some exhibitor costs and sponsorship packets
shortly.
Recently I had the opportunity to met Dana Gage. Her
son Conner lost his life to drowning in Possum Kingdom Lake. She formed the LV Project dedicated to
drowning prevention. Her local foundation (North Richland Hills) will team up with IPSSA to talk to school
children. IPSSA Mid Cities has donated $750 to the
project.
And as usual please let me know if you can take part in
our Auction which will be held at La Hacienda, Carrollton on the 17th of November, 6pm, we will pay for the
dinner and appetizers and let everyone
speak and then enjoy the evening.
