THINGS TO DO
Mivtza Purim Preparations
• We should do our best to make sure every Jew--man, woman,
and child--has the chance to fulfill all the mitzvos of Purim
properly.1
Among the peulos you can do2
• Encourage others to fulfill these mitzvos.
• If necessary, arrange for a baal korei to read the megillah at
night and again by day. (If a Sefer Torah is available and
a minyan is present, he should read the Parshah of Vayavo
Amalek as well.)
• Prepare portions of food others can give as mishloach manos.
Each gift should include two portions of food or drink (or one
food and one drink3) that are edible in their present state.4
• Prepare coins they can give as matanos la’evyonim. Make sure
each matanah is a shaveh prutah (i.e., a nickel, if using US
currency).
• If possible, give out pamphlets with the basic Purim laws and
a brief outline of the Purim story.5
• Arrangements should be made to ensure that Jews in
convalescent homes, orphanages, hospitals, and correctional
institutes are able to celebrate Purim as well.6
• Children should participate in mivtza Purim as well, by

influencing their friends to fulfill the mitzvos of Purim.7
Other Purim Preparations
• The mitzvah of matanos la’evyonim can be fulfilled by sending
money to a tzedakah organization in advance for them to
distribute on Purim.8

• Yahrzeit of the Rashag (Rabbi Shmaryahu Gurary, son-in-law of
the Frierdiker Rebbe and director of United Lubavitcher Yeshivoth). He passed away in 5749 (1989).9
• According to Kabbalah, the earliest time to recite kiddush
levanah is the seventh day from the molad, i.e., motzoei
Shabbos.10 (However, see above, 3 Adar.)

• Today is the 77th anniversary of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s arrival to
the United States for the second time (in 5700/1940), marking
the culmination of his miraculous escape from the Nazi inferno
and the transfer of the center of Chassidus Chabad to the chatzi
kadur hatachton.
• The Rebbe urged that this day be utilized to increase in
spreading Torah, and especially Chassidus, throughout the
globe.12

Taanis Esther
THINGS TO DO
• Since 13 Adar occurs on Shabbos this year, the fast of Taanis
Esther is observed today.
• As long as you have not yet gone to sleep, you may eat until
alos hashachar (unless before one goes to sleep one has in
mind to eat upon awakening before alos Hashachar).13
• Do not rinse your mouth in the morning (as is usually done
before reciting birchos hashachar).14

Shacharis and Selichos15
• The congregation does not recite Aneinu by Shacharis. The
chazzan, however, recites Aneinu during chazaras hashatz as a
separate berachah between Goel Yisroel and Refaeinu.
• Selichos are recited after the paragraph Shomer Yisrael after

the sentence Misratzeh berachamim.16
• New editions of Tehillas Hashem feature the Selichos in a
seamless format. The following is the correct order of the
Selichos according to the pages of the older edition of Tehillas

Krias Hatorah
• Vayechal is read both at Shacharis and at Minchah.
• The congregation recites aloud the pesukim ‫ל‬-‫ ה’ ה’ א‬,‫שוב מחרון אפיך‬
‫( רחום וחנון‬until ‫)ונקה‬, and ‫וסלחת לעונינו‬, followed by the baal korei.26

Machatzis Hashekel
• We give machatzis hashekel before Minchah27 by giving to
tzedakah28 three half-coins of the established currency of the
current time and place.29 (In the United States, we use three
half-dollars.)
• In places where half-coins are uncommon (such as in the
United States), the gabbaim prepare three silver half-dollars
for the community to use. Acquire the half-coins by placing
money into the plate or pushka in their stead and then lifting
them. Give the half-coins to tzedakah by depositing them back
into the plate or pushka.30
• There is a widespread custom to give machatzis hashekel on
behalf of each family member.31
• Children should be encouraged to give machatzis hashekel
using their own money. Parents should help them do this
and make sure they have sufficient money left over for their
personal needs.32

Minchah
• After Ashrei and Chatzi Kaddish, Vayechal is read. The individual
who receives the third aliyah also serves as maftir, reading
Dirshu Hashem behimatz’o, followed by three berachos (until ‫מגן‬
‫)דוד‬. Chatzi Kaddish is not said between shlishi and the haftorah.
• After the haftorah is read, the Sefer Torah is returned to
the aron kodesh and Chatzi Kaddish is recited, followed by
Shemoneh Esrei.33
• Aneinu is said during Shema Koleinu (unless one is not
fasting). (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you
forgot to say Aneinu.)
• The chazzan says Aneinu as a separate berachah between Goel
Yisroel and Refaeinu.
• The chazzan also says Birchas Kohanim.

• Chazaras hashatz is followed by Tachanun, the long Avinu
Malkeinu, Va’anachnu lo neida, Kaddish Shalem, and Aleinu.
Divrei Kivushin
• The Rebbe renewed the custom of saying divrei kivushin (words
that arouse the listeners to teshuvah) after Minchah . Wherever
possible, at least a few words of inspiration should be shared,
or a relevant chapter of Tehillim should be recited.34
• If this cannot be arranged, at least reflect on the theme of
teshuvah as it relates to this day, and Hashem will consider
these thoughts as having been verbalized.35

• When saying shnayim mikra, read the haftorah of both Parshas
Tetzaveh and Parshas Zachor.36
• If there will not be enough time to bring your megillah to shul
tomorrow after Maariv, make sure to bring it to shul today.37

Taanis Esther
Fasting
• One who is ill (even if not dangerously so),38 pregnant, or
nursing39 is exempt from fasting.40 The same applies to a
woman within thirty days of giving birth (even if she is not
nursing).41
• You may wake up early to eat or drink, provided that you

stipulated clearly before going to sleep that you will do so
(and that you wake up in time to wash negel vasser and say the
relevant berachos from birchos hashachar beforehand). If you
are accustomed to drinking upon awakening, you do not need
to stipulate for drinking.41
Shacharis and Selichos
• If a minimum of three congregants are fasting, the chazzan
should recite Aneinu as a separate berachah.43 If not, he should
recite it during Shema Koleinu.44
• Selichos are recited standing,45 especially the sections of
Ashamnu, Shema Koleinu, Avinu Malkeinu, and the 13 Middos
Harachamim.
Krias Hatorah
• One who is not fasting should not be called up to the Torah.46
If you were called up and don’t want to publicize that you
aren’t fasting, you may accept the aliyah.47
• When the Rebbe would receive an aliyah, he would begin
reciting the pessukim ‫ל רחום וחנון‬-‫ ה’ ה’ א‬,‫שוב מחרון אפיך‬, and ‫וסלחת‬
‫ לעונינו‬together with the congregation and finish them together
with the baal korei.48
Machatzis Hashekel
• There is a machlokes whether women and teenage males
between the age of thirteen and twenty are obligated to give
machatzis hashekel.49
• Children under bar mitzvah are exempt from giving machatzis
hashekel. However, if you have given once on a child’s behalf,
you must continue to do so.50
• If you did not give machatzis hashekel before Minchah, give it
before the megillah reading on Purim morning.51
