In the first Sefer Torah we read seven aliyos in Parshas Tetzaveh. The second Sefer Torah is then placed next to the first one,1 and Chatzi Kaddish is recited. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the first Sefer Torah.2 • In the second Sefer Torah we read Maftir—the kriah of Parshas Zachor (Ki Seitzei 25:17-19). This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the second Sefer Torah.3 • According to most Poskim, the kriah of Parshas Zachor is min hatorah.4 Therefore, when listening, have in mind to be yotzei your obligation.5 • There is a machlokes haposkim whether women are obligated to hear Parshas Zachor.6 The Rebbe once mentioned that it has become customary for women to go to shul and hear this Parshah.7 • The baal korei reads zeicher zecher Amalek (first zeicher and then zecher).8 • The haftorah of Parshas Zachor is then read, beginning with כה 1 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp ( אמר ה’ צבאות פקדתיI Shmuel 15:2-34).9 • We say Av Harachamim before Musaf.10 Minchah • We don’t say Tzidkas’cha, due to it being erev Purim.11 Handling the Megillah on Shabbos • The megillah should not be brought to shul on Shabbos, even where there is an eiruv, as this constitutes preparing for a weekday. You may, however, study or practice from it.12 Motzoei Shabbos - Purim Night • If you will be bringing your megillah to shul after Shabbos before Maariv, make sure to first say ברוך המבדיל בין קודש לחול. 13 • When davening Maariv, don’t forget (Atah Chonantanu and) Ve’al Hanissim. (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you forgot Ve’al Hanissim.) • Shemoneh Esrei is followed by Kaddish Shalem and the reading of the megillah (see below). If the minyan did not yet recite kiddush levanah, they should do so before reading the megillah.14 We then say Viyhi noam and Ve’atah kadosh. This is followed by Kaddish Shalem (omitting the stanza of Tiskabel), Aleinu, and havdalah.15 • Although the main Purim meal will take place tomorrow, a meal should be eaten tonight as well.16 If the meal includes bread, don’t forget to say Ve’al Hanissim.17 (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you forgot Ve’al Hanissim.) Listening to the Megillah • The megillah should be folded18 into three sections.19 • When listening to the berachos and kriah, have in mind to be yotzei your obligation.20 • Even missing to hear a single word or possuk can prevent the 2 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp listener from being yotzei. Therefore, if this happens, say the missing word(s) (from your megillah or Chumash) until you catch up to the chazzan.21 • We make noise when Haman’s name is mentioned with an appellation, such as האגגיor הרע. 22 • The listeners read the following four pessukim out loud (followed by the baal korei): ליהודים,)8:15( ומרדכי יצא,)2:1( איש יהודי )8:16(, and ( כי מרדכי10:3).23 • Additionally, when reaching ( חמש מאות איש9:6), the listeners say from חמש מאות אישuntil (and including) עשרתin one breath. This is followed by the baal korei.24 • We rustle the megillah when saying ( האגרת הזאת9:26) and אגרת ( הפורים הזאת השנית9:29).25 • After completing the megillah, the baal korei makes the berachah of Harov es riveinu. Do not speak until he completes the berachah.26 We then say Shoshanas Yaakov and roll up the megillah.27 • See below, “Hosafos,” for additional halachos and minhagim that apply when listening to the megillah, as well as those that apply when reading the megillah. S U N D AY, 14 A D A R, 5777 Purim THINGS TO DO • It is customary to wear Shabbos clothing (for married men—a kapote).28 • We don’t eat before hearing the megillah.29 Shacharis • We don’t say Tachanun.30 3 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp • Don’t forget to say Ve’al Hanissim. (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Ve’al Hanissim.) • Shemoneh Esrei is followed by Chatzi Kaddish and krias hatorah. We read the parshah of Vayavo Amalek. (The baal korei reads zecher zeicher Amalek, first zecher and then zeicher.31) This is followed by Chatzi Kaddish, hagbah, and gelilah.32 • If you did not hear Parshas Zachor on Shabbos, you can be yotzei by listening to the kriah of Vayavo Amalek.33 • Krias hatorah is followed by the reading of the megillah.34 (See above for the relevant halachos and minhagim.) • When listening to the berachah of Shehechiyanu, have in mind that it also applies to the mitzvos of mishloach manos, matanos la’evyonim, and the Purim feast.35 • After reading the megillah, we say Ashrei and Uva Letzion. Kaddish Shalem is recited, and the Sefer Torah is returned to the aron kodesh. We then continue with Beis Yaakov and complete davening as usual.36 Mishloach Manos and Matanos La’evyonim • The minimal obligation of mishloach manos is to send two portions of food or drink (or one food and one drink37) to one friend.38 The portions must be edible in their present state.39 • The minimal obligation of matanos la’evyonim is to give two presents to two poor people, one to each.40 • It is praiseworthy to send additional mishloach manos and give added matanos la’evyonim, beyond the minimum requirement.41 It is better to add in matanos la’evyonim than to add in mishloach manos and the Purim feast.42 Purim Customs • It is customary to eat hamantashen on Purim. • It is customary for children to wear costumes on Purim.43 Care should be taken to ensure that all costumes reflect the proper 4 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp yiddishe and chassidishe spirit. • In many places it is customary for children to act out the Purim story. Parents should emphasize to their children that it is inappropriate for a Jew to behave like a rasha such as Haman even for a short while. The child acting out Haman’s part should be aware that he/she is only doing so because someone must fill that position, not because they are comfortable with it and enjoy it.44 Minchah, the Purim Seudah, and Maariv • We daven Minchah early, followed by the seudah.46 • Don’t forget to say Ve’al Hanissim. (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Ve’al Hanissim.) The simchah of Purim is greater than the simchah of Yom Tov.45 • The seudah should begin before shekiah.47 • It is proper to study Torah for at least a few minutes48 before beginning the Purim seudah.49 • It is customary to eat kreplach during the meal.50 • On Purim we are obligated to drink wine beyond our habit.51 However, it is better to refrain from doing so if this will result in inappropriate behavior or a lack of proper respect for a mitzvah.52 It should be noted that the gezeirah of not drinking more than four shots of mashkeh seems to apply to Purim as well.53 • Say Ve’al Hanissim when bentching, even if it is already after nightfall (as long as you have not yet davened Maariv).54 (See below, “Hosafos,” for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Ve’al Hanissim.) • The Rebbe encouraged arranging farbrengens after the Purim seudah, carrying the simchah and achdus of Purim into Shushan Purim.55 • Don’t forget to daven Maariv! 5 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp • Tonight is the last night to recite kiddush levanah. It can be recited until 12:42 a.m.56 Thirty Days Before Pesach57 • Begin studying the halachos of Pesach.58 • Start giving maos chitim, providing Pesach provisions to those who need.59 • Refrain from eating matzah.60 • When handling chometz, make sure it does not get stuck somewhere in a way that will make it difficult to remove before Pesach.61 M O N D AY, 15 A D A R, 5777 Shushan Purim • In Yerushalayim (and other walled cities from the time of Yehoshua bin Nun), Purim is observed today. • We don’t say Tachanun.62 • Increase in festivities and simchah today as well.63 The joy of Chodesh Adar should continue in the days following Purim as well, in a continuously increasing measure.64 F R I D AY, 19 A D A R, 5777 THINGS TO DO • When saying shnayim mikra, say both the haftorah for Parshas Ki Sisa and the haftorah for Parshas Parah.65 6 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp HOSAFOS Purim, 5777 Ve’al Hanissim • Do not skip Ve’al Hanissim to be able to answer Kaddish, Kedushah, etc.66 • When davening, if you forgot Ve’al Hanissim and remembered before saying Hashem’s name that precedes hatov shimcha, go back and say Ve’al Hanissim.67 • If you remembered after saying Hashem’s name, when reaching the second Yihiyu leratzon, add: הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו נסים כמו שעשה בימי מרדכי וכו,’לאבותינו בימים ההם בזמן הזה, and then continue with Yihiyu leratzon.68 • If you remembered after finishing Shemoneh Esrei, there is no need to repeat it.69 • When bentching, if you forgot Ve’al Hanissim and remembered before saying Hashem’s name at the end of the berachah, go back and say Ve’al Hanissim.70 • If you remembered after saying Hashem’s name, when reaching הרחמן הוא יזכנו, add: הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו נסים כמו שעשה לאבותינו בימים ההם בימי מרדכי וכו,’בזמן הזה, and then continue with Horachamon.71 • If you remembered after finishing bentching, do not repeat it. Listening to the Megillah • Women are obligated to hear the megillah as well, both at night and by day. If they are unable to come to shul, make sure to arrange for the megillah to be read for them at home.72 • Children who are old enough to listen quietly should also be brought to shul to hear the megillah.73 If bringing young children to shul, make sure they sit quietly and only make noise at the appropriate times.74 7 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp Reading the Megillah • If you are reading the megillah on motzoei Shabbos at home, say havdalah first.75 • Open the megillah before saying the berachos.76 • If you have already heard the megillah and are reading it for others, one of the listeners should (stand77 and) recite the berachos. If not, you can say them instead.78 (This applies when reading for women as well.79) • Do not speak until you have finished reading the megillah. Speaking between the berachos and the kriah necessitates the berachos to be repeated.80 • Have in mind to be motzi the listeners.81 • Be careful to read each word accurately, as a change in pronunciation may result in the listeners not being yotzei. • When reaching the possuk ( בלילה ההוא נדדה שנת המלך6:1), raise your voice.82 • In 8:11, read להרוג ולאבדand then ולהרוג ולאבד.83 • In 9:2, read ואיש לא עמד בפניהםand then ואיש לא עמד לפניהם.84 • If no minyan is present, do not recite the berachah of Harov es riveinu.85 However, you may recite it without shem u’malchus.86 • If you will not be able to finish reading the megillah before shekiah, you can still read it--without the berachos--until tzeis hakochavim.87 Mishloach Manos and Matanos La’evyonim • Some Poskim are of the opinion that mishloach manos must be sent via a shliach.88 This can be fulfilled by sending them via a child.89 • Women (from the age of bas mitzvah) are obligated to send mishloach manos and matanos la’evyonim.90 • Men should send mishloach manos to men and women should send to women.
