Phase one of the Phoenix Children's
Hospital (PCH) expansion completes at the
end of January. Construction for the new
addition initially began in 2007. The $588
million project includes the addition of an
II-story patient-care tower. High-volume
public spaces such as admitting, cafeteria
and retail pharmacy will be located on the
ground floor, with upper floors devoted to
clinical programs and private patient rooms.
It will also feature 96 PICU/CICU rooms
and 12 more operating rooms. Established
in 1983 as Arizona's first pediatric hospital,
PCH admits more than 12,000 patients a
year.

chosen to create a tranquil atmosphere.
"We wanted the expe.t:iencewhen you
pull in to be a dramatic one and a calm one.
We wanted an oasis out front," said Executive Director Dave Cottle. "You'll see when
you walk in, the lighting, the colors, it's a
very calming architecture."
The new tower features a three-story
lobby and atrium, out-patient services and
24-hour cafe. An all-night place has been
featured inside the hospital for staff and
families with critical children.
Kitchell Contractors and HKS Inc. head_ed\the project with University Mechanical
and Delta Diversified serving as the subcontractors.
"We did the HVAC,plumbing and medical gas on the project. The square footage
of the expansion was 760,444," said University Mechanical Project Manager Paul
Nicopoulos. "PCH reported that wIth the
expansion, the hospital is now one of the
largest children's facilities in the world."
Nicopoulos said that the 30-month Phase
one project, including the pre-construction
designphase,peakedat about 180manpower.
"Hospitals are always complicated, but
the project went well and we are very proud
of our work," Nicopoulos said.

35-month electrical work on the facility
was c~mplex but ultimately a success.
"It was like three jobs in one," said
Tremblay. "There was a lot to it. We
installed two medium voltage distribution
systems that re-feed into the existing
facility."
Other improvements include a highly
visible main entry boulevard off Thomas
Road, leading to parking for patients, families, visitors, and medical staff, offering
direct access to the new patient tower; an
increase from 345 licensed beds to 626 by
2012; adding new programs like PCH
Sports Medicine for Young Athletes, which
focuses on injury prevention and dedicated
care for growirig athletes, and the NeuroNewborn Intensive Care Unit, which offers
state-of-the-art care for babies; and growing existing programs like the Children's I ~
Neuroscience Institute, which provides
comprehensive care for children with neurological and behavioral disorders.
Additional elements include a Pediatric
Trauma Center, the only Levell centre in
Arizona; an innovative, energy-efficient
Edwin and Nancy Van Brunt Central Energy Plant that will conserve resources and
saVe the hospital $750,000 annually; renovated Phoenix Children's Julie and Tim
Louis Newborn Intensive Care Unit, which
at 110 licensed beds is the largest and one
of the most innovativefacilitiesof its kind I
in the US; an 18-unit Ronald McDonald
House that provides a home away from
home for families of seriously ill children
receivingtreatment;and a 750-caremployee-only parking garage.
