THE SAMUEL GROUP is for single young adults (18-30s), who are wondering what God is calling them to
do with their lives. The aim is to help participants discern their direction in life, whether this is to marriage or
dedicated single life, to priesthood or consecrated life. It would also suit those who are making decisions
about their career, or about spending time as a missionary or volunteer. Participants take time to listen to
God and to His Word speaking to their life. They commit to attending monthly meetings with the group, and
to meeting individually with a spiritual guide. Contact Fr Matt Anscombe for details:
[email protected].
YEAR DEDICATED TO CONSECRATED LIFE This weekend marks the start of the Church’s special Year

Church, and is always orientated to the Church. Please keep in your prayers throughout this year the many
Sisters, Monks, Nuns and Religious Priests and Brothers who enrich the Diocese in so many ways. We are
all invited to a special celebration at the Cathedral with Bishop Declan on Sunday 1st February 2015 at 6pm,

together with the diocesan family in celebration of the Consecrated Life.

WEEKLY REFLECTION ON THE EUCHARIST by OUR YOUNG PEOPLE
“If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy” - Saint Jean Vianney. We have been continually
reminded of the importance and the beauty of the Mass and the Eucharist by the Saints, but we still
neglect the importance of it in our lives. Most food we eat becomes part of us but when we eat the
Eucharist we become part of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So for this feast that we attend every Sunday, do we dress as though we are going to a wedding or as
though we are going to a barbecue? Are we the last guests to turn up to or do we turn up earlier out of
enthusiasm and love for God? Do we give proper thanks afterwards or do we rush out as the service
finishes? All of the answers to these questions reflect our commitment and love for God. We should pray
to God that he will help us to focus during the Mass and then give thanks afterwards for the gift of the
Eucharist and the Mass. We should remember that we will never out-give God, so the more time we give
Him preparing for Mass, the more God will enable us to receive all His graces.
FROM POPE FRANCIS
The Second Vatican Council reminded us that the Church is continually journeying through history to the
kingdom of heaven, of which the Church on earth is the seed and beginning. This journey will reach its
fulfilment in the end times, when the universe will be transformed and we will be fully enveloped by joy,
peace and the love of God in the new heavenly Jerusalem. Even now we experience a communion
between the Church on earth and the Church in heaven through our union with those who have died.
The souls in heaven assist us with their prayers, while we assist the souls in purgatory through our good
works, prayer and participation in the Eucharist. As members of the Church then, the distinction is not
between who has died and who is living, but rather who is in Christ and who is not. Saint Paul tells us
further that it is not only humanity which will be liberated from corruption, but the whole of creation. All
things will be brought into the fullness of being, truth and beauty. This is God’s design for us and the
Church’s vocation. Let us ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to watch over us on our way and to help us be
a joyful sign of faith and hope among our brothers and sisters. (Pope Francis, 26 November 2014)

PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS all those who are sick and in hospital. We remember those

Patricia Clark and those whose anniversaries occur at this time. May they rest in peace.
DIOCESAN PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS “I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have
received” The hymn Autumn Days, penned by Estelle White, considers some rather strange things that we
might be grateful for in our lives. These range from “autumn days when the grass is jewelled” to “jet planes
meeting in the air to be refuelled” and “clouds that look like familiar faces” to “the smell of bacon as I fasten
up my laces”. As we begin our Advent journey, what are the unexpected things that we want to give thanks
for? God calls us and chooses us. How do we want to show our gratitude for what he is doing in us? As for
the more strange or individual things we might take delight in, it’s right to remember that gratefulness is the
heart of prayer!
WEEKLY GUIDE TO PRAYER
Sunday is the beginning of a new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. The first reading on
Sunday is from the Prophet Isaiah as the people repent before God: “Would that you might meet us doing
right, that we were mindful of you in our ways!” St Mark's Gospel offers the image of the master who leaves
his servants in charge while he is away. Be watchful! Be alert! The gospel readings in Advent show that
the promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus brings healing. He raises up the childlike. And Jesus calls and
sends the twelve Apostles to continue his ministry.
On weekdays during the first part of Advent – that is until December 17 – we focus on the first reading. This
week it is from the Prophet Isaiah. These readings are about promises. Isaiah is consoling, building up and
preparing his people to have hope. “In the days to come,” he says over and over. When the day of promise
comes, “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation
shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again.” Even though King David's line,
and that of his father, Jesse, are almost wiped out, Isaiah proclaims hope: “On that day, a shoot shall sprout
from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.” There will even be a peace in nature –
the lion lying down with the lamb. “There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth
shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea.” Even Jesus’s own statement about
his mission is seen in the powerful images Isaiah uses to give us courage and hope: “On the day the LORD
binds up the wounds of his people.”
