WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES 18 January 2015 Today is the World Day of Migrants and
Refugees.
MASS FOR THE BEREAVED The 6pm Mass at Holy Redeemer on Saturday 17 January is being offered for
the intentions of all our bereaved parishioners who have lost loved ones during the year from November 2013
to November 2014.
CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2014–2015: The next meeting is in St Osmund’s Parish Rooms at 6.45pm
this Tuesday evening 20 January. This meeting is for candidates, parents, and sponsors.
RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults — Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Perhaps
you already attend Mass but would like to know more. Perhaps you know someone that would like to know
more. Our Salisbury Journey in Faith group is for those who are interested in exploring the Catholic faith. The
group meets on Thursdays evenings. Please speak to one of the Priests if you want to know more.
MORNING RETREAT FOR WOMEN on Wednesday 21 January, at St Georges Catholic Church, Warminster

SALISBURY CHURCHES TOGETHER — RENEWING HOPE A discussion chaired by The Bishop of
Salisbury to be held in St Mark’s Church, St Mark’s Avenue, SP1 3DL, 7pm for 7.30pm this Monday evening,

DOWNTON CHURCHES TOGETHER — CHRISTIAN UNITY SERVICE The service will be held in The Good
Shepherd Chapel, Downton at 6pm next Sunday evening, 25 January. All are welcome.
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2015 takes place on Tuesday 27 January 2015. This day is significant
because it is the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and also the 50th anniversary of Vatican II’s
decree Nostra Aetate.
BAPTISM PREPARATION COURSE will be held on the three Sundays, 1, 8, 15 February, starting at the 9am
Mass and finishing around 11.15am. Both parents are required to attend and Godparents are welcome, if they

CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE is taking place in Clifton Cathedral on Saturday 14 February 2015. Bishop
Declan is inviting the people of our diocese to join him at the special Mass beginning at 12 noon, as part of
National Marriage Week. This celebration is for the whole diocesan community and especially our married
couples.
MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND The next Marriage Encounter Weekend in our diocese is Friday 27
February to Sunday 1 March, at Lydiard House, Swindon. This is aimed at married couples who want to

VSO Nepal There will be a collection after Masses at St Osmund’s and Holy Redeemer on Saturday 24 and
Sunday 25 January for a Voluntary Services Overseas programme in Nepal, where Hannah Robinson (Lizzy’s
daughter) will be living for 3 months in an impoverished community and working on health and sanitation
projects.
PARISH LUNCHES have now ceased until 9 April. In the meantime, from the Thursday after Ash Wednesday
(i.e. 19 February) there will be soup served throughout Lent in the Parish Rooms at St Osmund after the
Thursday midday Mass. This is for ALL our Catholic community, and anyone else who would like to attend.

WELCOMERS AT MASS Two people very kindly offered recently to help with welcoming and giving out the
hymn books before one of the Sunday morning Masses at St Osmund’s. Unfortunately, we have lost a note of
their names. Could you please make yourselves known to the volunteers who are currently doing the hymn
books at the back of the church. Thank you.

SECOND COLLECTION This Sunday 18 January is for SCORE Overseas Projects. Salisbury Catholic
OutREach (SCORE) is one of the ways in which Salisbury Catholics reach out to others, both in the local
area and overseas. At the committee meeting in December the following grants were made: Care Ministry,
South Africa £2000 to extend its work with those affected by HIV/AIDS and TB; Chipata Community School,
Lusaka, Zambia £3000 to fund a special needs teacher for 3 years; Salisbury Young Catholics £1000 to
develop a discipleship programme. Thanks to everyone for your support.
TRAIDCRAFT The Traidcraft stall will be in St Osmund’s parish rooms between the morning Masses on this
Sunday 18 January.

from Standing Orders. Gift Aid was worth a further £84.90 per week. December offertory income averaged
£525.82 per week, £187.27 in cash and £258.12 from Standing Orders. Gift Aid was worth a further £80.43

FOR THE 101st WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES (2015)
Jesus is “the evangelizer par excellence and the Gospel in person” (Evangelii Gaudium, 209). His solicitude,
particularly for the most vulnerable and marginalized, invites all of us to care for the frailest and to recognize
his suffering countenance, especially in the victims of new forms of poverty and slavery. The Lord says: “I
was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed
me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me” (Mt
25:35-36). The mission of the Church, herself a pilgrim in the world and the Mother of all, is thus to love
Jesus Christ, to adore and love him, particularly in the poorest and most abandoned; among these are
certainly migrants and refugees, who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers of every
kind. For this reason, the theme for this year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees is: Church without
frontiers, Mother to all.
The Church opens her arms to welcome all people, without distinction or limits, in order to proclaim that “God
is love” (I Jn 4:8,16). After his death and resurrection, Jesus entrusted to the disciples the mission of being
his witnesses and proclaiming the Gospel of joy and mercy. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples left the
Upper Room with courage and enthusiasm; the strength of the Holy Spirit overcame their doubts and
uncertainties and enabled all to understand the disciples’ preaching in their own language. From the
beginning, the Church has been a mother with a heart open to the whole world, and has been without
borders. This mission has continued for two thousand years. But even in the first centuries, the missionary
proclamation spoke of the universal motherhood of the Church, which was then developed in the writings of
the Fathers and taken up by the Second Vatican Council. The Council Fathers spoke of Ecclesia Mater to
explain the Church’s nature. She begets sons and daughters and “takes them in and embraces them with
her love and in her heart” (Lumen Gentium, 14).
The Church without frontiers, Mother to all, spreads throughout the world a culture of acceptance and
solidarity, in which no one is seen as useless, out of place or disposable. When living out this motherhood
effectively, the Christian community nourishes, guides and indicates the way, accompanying all with
patience, and drawing close to them through prayer and works of mercy.

and those whose anniversaries occur at this time. May they rest in peace.
Jane Lemon edited for many years the Catholic Parish Magazine in Salisbury. Her funeral will take place on

DIOCESAN PRAYERS FOR VOCATIONS “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening” In 1989, in his
diocese of Milan, Cardinal Martini launched the ‘Samuel Group’, a monthly meeting for young people seeking to
hear more closely God’s call in their lives. Over a decade, 200 young people would come together each year, to
ponder on the Word of God and seek spiritual guidance in order to listen, just as Samuel was instructed to listen
by Eli. Now, Samuel Groups are found across the world, including our diocese of Clifton. Let us pray that the
invitation of the Lord for young adults to consider more deeply their vocation will be heard more and more
across our diocese. The Lord is calling! Let’s make it possible for all to hear and discern well.
WEEKLY GUIDE TO PRAYER
Sunday begins the Second Week of Ordinary Time, and John’s Gospel offers us the story of the calling of the
first two disciples. He asks them what they are looking for, and when they ask where he lives, he invites them,
“Come, and you will see.”
The first reading at our weekday Masses this week continues with the Letter to the Hebrews. Written to inspire
and encourage the community in its faith, the author exhorts them “not to become sluggish, but imitators of those
who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises.” As we continue with Mark’s Gospel during the
week, Jesus is asked why his disciples do not fast. He challenges the religious leaders to have a completely
open mind and heart to his teaching because “new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.” Jesus is the Lord of the
Sabbath, bringing a new freedom. It is only Chapter 3 in the Gospel, but we already see the tension building.
Because Jesus heals a withered hand on the Sabbath, the Pharisees seek to kill him. Jesus withdraws and people from the surrounding regions come to him, and even the demons know who he is. Jesus names twelve
Apostles to be with him, to preach and to drive out demons.
