On October 8ththe Carberry community celebrated its kick-off to its five
year anniversary with a carnival, open house, book fair, food drive, and pizza
dinner! Parents, students and staff were all excited to gather to recognize
this important milestone. All events were a big hit, and were even highlighted
on the front cover of the October 10th edition of the Brampton Guardian!
Carberry will also be showcased in the November edition of Snap’d – you can
pick up a free copy at many locations throughout Brampton, including the Metro at Trinity Commons.

We would like to thank the Carberry community for coming out and supporting
us; we look forward to building a stronger relationship with everyone throughout the 2014-2015 school year. We would also like to thank Airbounce Amusements for providing us with a face painter, inflatable midway and a variety of
fabulous carnival games. A big thanks to Grabba Pizza and Fortinos for the
pizza and drinks. Without all of the support, Carberry’s first funfair would
not have been a great success.
If you weren’t
able to attend on

don’t worry, we

Peel Board Advantage Education Fair on Nov. 8
If you live in Brampton or Caledon, plan to attend the Peel Board Advantage Education Fair at Harold
M. Brathwaite Secondary School on Nov. 8. Drop by between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to learn about our middle schools with regional programs and secondary schools in Brampton and Caledon. Staff and students
will be available to answer questions about the schools’ academic and extracurricular programs.
The day will also include student musical performances and sport games in the gymnasium. Snacks will
be provided.
Winter bus safety
The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child
safe throughout the winter months.
Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.
Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late
evening.
Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop
when there is snow and ice.
Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on
wet or icy steps or road surfaces.
Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.
On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to
your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:
When possible, wait with your child for the bus.
Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult. Teach
your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is.
Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.

MILK BAG MATS FOR HAITI!
Please help us collect Milk Bags! Carberry is involved in a project that involves collecting 4L milk bags – of
any brand or colour! Eventually, the milk bags will be turned into beautiful and durable sleeping mats, which
will be sent to children in Haiti who are living in poverty. Please send them with your child to school!
BAGS TO MATS
Keep milk bags out of our landfills, and give homeless children a soft place to rest their head at night. We
would appreciate if you could keep the bags flat or folded.
Thank you for your support in this GREEN initiative where kids can help kids!!
Offence Declaration required for returning volunteers
Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the
success of the school community. At Carberry P.S. we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year.
To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check.
A police background check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want
to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this background check.
Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as
being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will be mailed an Offence Declaration Form
that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. You will not be able to
volunteer with the Peel board until you have returned this form. Forms will be mailed in November.
If you have any questions about criminal record checks or the offence declaration form,
please call the board office at 905-890-1010, extension 2488.
Choose Action on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week
The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the
week of November 16 to 22.
Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene
when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught
to:
•
define bullying
•
identify forms of bullying
•
identify roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or the trusted advocate
•
determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment
•
demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities
Every school has a Climate for Learning and Working Team which is required to develop a Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan as part of the School Success Plan. Also, every employee who is involved
in the care and service of students is obligated to report in writing to the school administration any
action for which the principal must consider suspension or expulsion. Bullying is an offence that must
be considered for suspension.
Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting
Schools Act, that came into effect on September 1, 2012. For more information, visit:

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 30, 2015
Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI)? For the 2015-16 school year,
parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015.
Registration for FI will be done through an online registration form that will be available on Nov.
24 2014 at 9:00am at www.peelschools.org/French.
What is the FI program like? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the program?
How can you tell if it is the right choice for your child?
One way to help answer these questions is to attend the information meeting at the FI school your
child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear about the
program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose children are now in
the program. A parent information night will be held at each FI school in Peel on Nov. 20 at 7
p.m.
Registration process
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for
students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the
number of spots in grade 1 FI, a lottery system will be used to identify students gaining entrance
into the grade 1 FI program.
All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a lottery and assigned a rank using
a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served
basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed,
again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to
participate in the lottery, and for more information about the lottery and waitlist processes, visit
www.peelschools.org/French.

“Ugh. Math.” Unfortunately, this is the atude many students (and adults) have about math. If we're going
to help our students achieve numeracy greatness, we need to turn these nega"ve atudes into posi"ve
ones. So, our three-year math strategy, EngageMath, starts with something we have enormous influence
over—our atude towards math.
Everyone is born with a math gene
According to Stanford University Professor Carol Dweck, students who believe that intelligence or math and
science ability is a fixed trait are at a significant disadvantage compared to students who believe their abili"es can be developed. Like anything else, our talents and abili"es in math are nurtured only if we have
a growth mindset about them. A “Yes I can” atude when it comes to numeracy is the first step. A “Count
on Us” atude comes next.
Online math parent resources
While the Peel board’s EngageMath strategy plans out certain ac"ons, it is by no means a magic bullet to
answering the ques"ons and challenges surrounding numeracy and student achievement. Math success for
all our students requires a strong partnership between home and school. That's why we're commi0ed to
providing you with the parent resources you need to help us boost math achievement.
Online resources to help you support your child or teen's numeracy success are available on the Peel
board’s website at h/p://www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild/math. There you will find links to:
