Baptism preparation classes for parents with children
ages birth through 3 years old will be held at Holy Family
from 7:00-9:00 pm in room 1 in the lower church hall on the
following dates: November 20th, January 14th, March 11th
and May 13th. Parents attend one session and should try
to attend during the second trimester of the pregnancy, but
all are welcome at any time. Please contact Diane Hurtuk,

On this last Sunday of the church year, may we embrace God's vision of his creation and our place in it; may God's
spirit instill in us the compassion and wisdom to recognize every human being as the manifestation of God's life and
love in our midst. Questions for the Car: What opportunities do I have to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, etc.? Do
I make good use of these opportunities?

Year of Consecrated Life -- Pope Francis has announced the Year of Consecrated Life to begin November 21, 2014,
noting that the year will take place in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and conclude on
November 21, 2015. In making the announcement for the Year of Consecrated Life, it was explained the first objective
of this year would be to “make a grateful remembrance of the recent past”, the second objective “to embrace the future
with hope” and the third, “living the present with passion” This passion, speaks of “being in love, of true friendship, of
profound communion.” The Year of Consecrated Life will have an evangelical focus, helping people to realize “the
beauty of following Christ” in the various types of religious vocations – as men and women religious. Here in the
Diocese of Cleveland we will be celebrating along with the universal church with a variety of activities including an
opening liturgy celebrated with Bishop Richard Lennon at 7:00 pm in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
in Cleveland on November 21, 2014 and recognition of the opening of the Year of Consecrated Life in parishes the
weekend of November 22nd/23rd with prayer cards and intercessory prayers.

Time and Talent Possibilities – We could really use some additional Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist who
would be willing to visit one or two homebound parishioners – or Catholic individuals in our local long-term care
facilities. These visits can be very flexible and are usually arranged by mutual convenience. Please contact Joan

Society would welcome new members. They would especially appreciate a couple of retirees (or others available

Campaign for Human Development -- “The Church’s
love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant
tradition” (Catechism, 2444). The collection for the
Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides
funding for groups that create lasting change and uplift
the poor in the United States. CCHD grants have gone
towards advancing education, supporting economic
development, and improving housing in low-income
neighborhoods. You can participate in this tradition –
using the envelopes in our November packet or by going

PSR NEWS: We are happy to
announce the start of a sacramental
preparation class for children in grades 4-8 who have not
received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist
Classes are held during PSR on Sunday mornings, 10:45-noon.
If you have a child in 4th - 8th grade who has not received these

PSR classes for public school children with special needs in

Scripture Reflection
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17 - Our Gentle Judge
God will judge us. Our belief in that promise fills us with anxiety
and hope.
When we remember Christ the King, we acknowledge that he
came to us, taught with wisdom, performed miraculous deeds,
formed a community of disciples, died on the cross, and rose
again. We believe that this Jesus will come again to judge the
living and the dead.
If we read the prophet Ezekiel, though, the coming judgment need
not frighten us. Ezekiel reveals God as a shepherd who bends
over backward to tend the flock. When the sheep get lost on a
cloudy day, God rescues them. When they grow tired, God lets
them rest. When injured, God binds them up. When they are sick,
God heals them.
Before God is a judging shepherd, God is a tender shepherd.
The good news about judgment is what precedes it. God’s care
comes first. When we get lost amid the challenges of life, God
rescues us. When we are tired and ill mannered, God gives us
rest. When we are injured by sin, or sickened by depravity, God
will grant forgiveness. There is no judgment before there is care.
God’s first wish is not the destruction of sheep. God’s first wish is
salvation.
1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 - Harvest Time
Farmers still delight at the first fruits of the crop. Planting and
raising crops takes a great deal of time and skill. But it also relies
on the weather. Many farmers pray for favorable weather and a
bountiful crop, so that the world can continue to enjoy the fruits of
the earth. And when the crops first bring forth fruit, it is time to
give thanks.
In some ancient communities, the farmers offered the first fruits of
the crop back to God. They brought them to the temple or offered
them in sacrifice. They believed that God was good to them, and
they wanted God to know their gratitude.
In the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul called Jesus the first
fruits of those who had fallen asleep. Human burial is like the
burial of any seed. It produces changes, and the changes bear
fruit for the good of the world. Jesus rose from the dead like the
first fruits bursting from the crops. He completed the offering of
himself to God.
But Jesus is only the first of the fruits. There will be more. “In
Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order:
Christ the first fruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to
Christ.”
We all live in God’s garden. When we die, when we are buried in
the soil, we await our resurrection. God will raise up the faithful in
a glorious harvest, when death shall be no more, and life reigns
over all.

Immigration: "In a presentation to the Fall General
Assembly of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB), Archbishop Lucas of Omaha, Nebraska,
chairman, USCCB Committee on Catholic Education, and
Bishop Flores of Brownsville, Texas, chairman, Committee
on Cultural Diversity in the Church, said, 'The New
Evangelization calls us to open up an inviting space where
God's grace can take hold and bear fruit, to welcome the
Spirit in ways that support conversion, touch the heart, and
inspire.' Latino and African American students attending a
Catholic school are more likely to graduate from high school
and college. 'Welcoming more children from diverse
populations in our Catholic Schools, and reaching out to
underserved communities, is important for the future of
Catholic schools and of our Church,' said Bishop Flores. He
said this is in keeping with the call of Pope Francis in his
apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, and encouraged
bilingual staff to bridge the gap and build relationships with
Latino communities. Catholic schools are less available in
areas where the Catholic population has grown the most,
mostly thanks to Latinos, in the South and the West.
Consistent cultural competency training and financial
investments have produced positive results. The percentage
of Latino children in Catholic schools in the U.S. has grown
from 12.8% to 15% over four years. 'The needle is moving
in the right direction, even if slowly,' Bishop Flores said."

The warm clothing collection for St.
Bernard’s homeless and working poor has
been postponed this year because of the
construction in the LCH. Ordinarily I
collect October through January. Here is
what is most needed: Men’s gloves,
hoodies, jeans, coats, boots, tennis shoes, socks and
hats. Women’s clothing of all sizes, especially larger
sizes. Blankets and backpacks/bags for men or women
are also requested. We have about 75% men, 15%
women and 10% children. Please hang on to these until
we have a drop off location or call me and you can drop
them off at my house or arrange pick up. If you’d like to
make a monetary donation to be used to purchase
needed sizes at the local thrift shop, you can drop it off at
the rectory in an envelope marked Mary Stenger. Tax
receipts will be sent in January to those that leave their
name, address and approximate $ amount of

A Reflection on Consecrated Life Perfectae Caritatis - Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life
Our Lord Jesus by his teaching and example is the font for the unfolding of religious life in the Church. Men and women,
consecrated to the Lord by the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, are
a living source of the contemplative and apostolic love the Church has for the world. These religious men and women,
driven by the love which the Holy Spirit poured forth in their hearts, live more and more for Christ and for his body which is
the Church. And, the total giving of themselves in Christ enriches the apostolic love of the whole Church. There is an
immense variety of spiritual gifts in the religious orders of men and women. Yet, these spiritual gifts are vibrant sources of
new hope as each community aims to renew itself in light of the unique spiritual gives of its founding and wisdom of the
Second Vatican Council which sought to better understand and serve the world. Religious men and women, with ever
deeper faith in Christ, devote themselves to the apostolic love which touches the people of our time and they give
themselves generously to demanding tasks of the Kingdom of God. At the heart of religious life is the common life modeled
by the early Church, a common life which sees believers united in heart and soul, especially in the Eucharist and in prayer
which breaks open into a life of charity. This unity of the community in charity expresses the visible pledge of Christ who will
return and also it is a vital source of apostolic energy. The Church profoundly esteems the religious who as such give
themselves to the renewal of Vatican II, and the religious give themselves as a sign of the ever greater fidelity of Christ to
all His holy people.
Rev. William Wiethorn, OFM Cap (1940-2014) Rev. William Wiethorn, OFM Cap served as a Capuchin Friar ordained in
1966. He was appointed by Bishop Richard Lennon as the Episcopal Delegate for Religious in 2010. He was working in
collaboration with religious orders on plans for the Year of Consecrated Life at the time of his death. We lovingly remember
Rev. William Wiethorn, OFM Cap and rejoice with him on his entrance into life with the reprint of this article originally
published during the Year of Faith.
