I also received an invitation to attend the mock
United Nations Water Conference (inquiry unit)
with the Year 6 students on Friday. As someone
who follows politics and international relations
reasonably closely I will enjoy this presentation and
it’s a great opportunity for our students to develop
an understanding of individual nation’s reliance on
water. Inquiry projects are certainly becoming an
important part of our Year 5/6 curriculum.
The rocketeers have just left for Tokyo at the
time of writing this article and they will arrive in
Japan at 7.05pm AEDST Thursday. I was glancing
through the action packed itinerary and saw the
bit about how students introduce their team and
country, and I was reminded that Jaiden and
Louise are representing Australia!! Good-luck
guys, I’m sure you will do us all proud.
Teachers are busily preparing reports at the
moment and we have a pupil free report writing
day coming up on Monday December 1. Teachers
put a great deal of effort into preparing reports that
are informative and re-lect your child’s
performance and we welcome any feedback you
may have. Reports will be distributed on the last
week of term.
Mr Verrall, Mrs White, Mr O and the Year 4s were
about to go sur-ing when I spoke to Mr V on
Wednesday morning. They all left the college
with smiles on their faces on Tuesday morning
ready for their four day trip to Victor harbour. I
hope they all have a good time and sleep in past
5.30 which was the time some of the boys got out
of bed on Wednesday morning.
I visited the Year 1 students while they were
working on their “Blitzmasters” maths on
Wednesday. It was great to see how well they
were all doing with their sheets with most students completing their sheets within the 8
minutes allowed. The sheets I went through were
completed to a high standard with very few errors. Great work Year 1!!
Pupil free Day Monday-Report writing Day
On Saturday morning, Jaden and Louise will
present a five minute presentation on
themselves, Australia and Kaniva to the
students and their teachers from all the
participating teams. With teams going in
alphabetical order, Jaden and Louise will be
the first team up to present. After lunch,
the teams will be provided with a briefing on
the rules of the competition, before heading
off on a two hour Culture Tour.
Jaden Hendy, Louise Hobbs, Mr Staehr and
Steven Hobbs are currently in the air between
Sydney and Tokyo on their way to the Asia
Pacific
Region Science
Agency
Forum
(APRSAF)-21 Water Rocket Event. The two day
event takes place this Saturday and Sunday at
the Nihon University Funabashi Campus in
Tokyo. The water rocket event precedes the
annual four day conference of the APRSAF.
The APRSAF aims to enhance space activities
and education in the Asia-Pacific region and
involves space agencies, governmental bodies,
companies, universities and research institutes
from more than 30 countries, including
Australia. The conference and water rocket
event are held together in a different city each
year. Each country is allowed to enter up to six
students, with most countries running a
preliminary water rocket event to choose their
representatives. Fortunately for Jaden and
Louise, English is the official language of the
APRSAF!
Part of the aim of the event is ‘cultural
exchange’ between the participating countries.
To help achieve this, all the teams are staying at
the same hotel, eat all meals together, and
travel on buses together to and from the
weekend’s activities.
On Sunday morning, Jaden and Louise will
be placed in a hall with a limited set of
plastic soft drink bottles, plastic sheets,
sticky tape and plasticine and given three
hours to build two rockets each. Despite
the students representing their country as a
team, each student is competing individually
and the exam conditions are strictly
enforced. After lunch, the students will be
given only one practice launch before they
have their two official launches, with the
aim to land their rockets as close as possible
to a target 80m away. The winning team will
be the team that has the lowest combined
distance to the target from their two
launches.
Funding for travel has been provided by the
Department
of Innovation,
Industry,
Science, Research and Tertiary Education,
and accommodation, meals and local
transport provided by the local organisers in
Tokyo. Given the length of the flights, The
Victorian Space Science Education Centre
has also contributed for additional
accommodation before the competition to
allow Jaden and Louise a day of relaxation
and sightseeing, and not make the trip so
rushed.
Thank you to everyone in the community
who has provided soft drink bottles to allow
the students to practice over the last two
months.
Last week the Discovery9 class had a truly
amazing time in Sydney. We left Kaniva
at 6.00am on Monday morning. Tucky
drove the bus to Adelaide Airport where
we had a quick bite to eat before boarding
the plane. We arrived in Sydney in the
afternoon and caught the train a couple of
stops to St James Station, which was only
a short walk to our hostel. The hostel was
very basic but an excellent central location. The first stop on our itinerary was the
Gallery of NSW. While some students
found the contemporary art a little challenging, Mrs Tuckwell was in her element. From the gallery we walked through
the city down to Circular Quay to catch a
ferry to Manly. For many, this was the
first time they had seen Sydney Harbour, the Bridge and Opera House. The weather was absolutely amazing and we all
enjoyed an alfresco dinner on the beach. The ferry ride back to Circular Quay was stunning as the sun began to set
behind Sydney Harbour.
We started Day Two from the heights of Sydney Tower Eye. We got an amazing view of the city which helped to orientate us somewhat. As a group, we then walked down to marvel at the beauty of the Queen Victoria Building. Much
of the second day was spent working on group ‘big question’ projects. All three groups took the opportunity, while in
the mall, to survey people walking about the city on their lunchbreaks. In the afternoon we visited Hyde Park Barracks,
which was home to many convicts who were sent to Sydney in the early 1800’s. Later in 1846, it was converted into
an immigration depot for single women and girls who had come to Australia looking for work as house maids. The
building is now a museum and allows visitors to dress up and try out many of the displays, including the convict style
hammocks which they slept on.
On Day Three we started with an early visit to Madam Tussauds. This was so much fun and many a selfie was taken.
Next door we visited the Sea Life Aquarium, where we watched the sharks and sting rays being fed. Students were
then challenged to use the public transport system, while still in small groups, to find their own way to the Sydney
Opera House. All made it safely, and the only person late was Mrs Tuckwell! Following a tour of the Opera House
was the highlight of the trip for most, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It took some time to getting kitted up in a
very fashionable grey onesie, harness belt, radio headphone set, complementary cap and attachable hankie! We were
able to take the climb quite slowly which allowed us to really take in and enjoy the view. This was followed by dinner
at China Town where everyone was still buzzing and talking about the amazing day we had experienced.
On our last full day in Sydney we walked to Martin Place, where we poked our heads in at Sunrise’s Brekky Central.
We then caught the train to Kings Cross where we participated in a ‘Rough Edges’ tour. While confronting, all students felt this was a really important experience. The issues of homelessness, drug addiction, safe injecting rooms and
alcohol fuel violence were raised and discussed. This was a great foundation for the group looking at the issue of
homelessness for their big question project. Our afternoon didn’t exactly go to plan. The tour guide who was to take us
around the Rocks did not show up, so we opted for a ride out to Cockatoo Island on the ferry. The final destination of
our trip was the Broadway Cinema to see the new Mocking Jay/Hunger Games movie.
On Friday, we all had to get up very early to get out to the airport in time for a 9.30am flight. After a pleasant flight,
Mrs Watts met us in Adelaide to drive us home. Mrs Tuckwell, Mr McFarlane and the Discovery9 class would all
agree that the week in Sydney was probably one of the best school trip we have ever experienced. The current Year
Eight class need to start planning and thinking about what they intend to do for their Quest Celebration.
A big thankyou to Mrs Watts and Mr Tuckwell for driving
us to and from the airport!
On Monday the Year 2 class, along with Gracie and Mrs Dodson,
visited the Adelaide Zoo. After travelling through some -ierce
thunderstorms along the way, we were very lucky to have a -ine
day for exploring. The day started well with a visit to the panda
exhibit, where Wang Wang and Funi both wandered around,
showing off nicely for the crowd. Other zoo highlights included
watching the sea lions at play, patting the animals in the Children’s Zoo, feeding time with the tigers, the macaw -lying overhead as we ate lunch and a barking meerkat outside the giraffe
enclosure. After seeing most of what the zoo had to offer, it was
time for a quick visit to the gift shop before climbing back on the
bus for the long trip home (only two hours behind schedule –
sorry mums and dads!) All in all, a brilliant day.
Year 2’s memorable moments:
Hannah – My favourite animals were the meerkats and the sea lions.
The meerkats were so cute!! One meerkat was playing dead on its
back! The sea lions were very good swimmers.
Ben – The hippo pooed in the pool while we were watching. When we
were eating lunch the macaw -lew over us.
Kali – I liked Wang Wang and Funi. The weirdest thing was when the
hippo pooped in the pool. The coolest thing was Manu the macaw
who swooped near our heads.
Logan – At the Adelaide Zoo I saw meerkats and
one was barking like a dog.
Bonnie – The sea lions were getting fed and they
were greedy pigs. The barbery sheep didn’t look
like sheep. They looked like goats.
Milly – it was funny when the hippo pooed in the
pool and when the baboon showed its bottom.
Kurt – The Tasmanian Devil is black. It is awesome.
Samantha – My favourite animals were the -lamingo and the barking meerkat and the hippo.
The coolest thing was when the meerkat was
barking. The thing that I was most hoping to see was an emu.
Riley – The weirdest thing was when the hippo yawned. Its mouth was huge! My favourite animal was
a tiger because it came up and ate food.
Toby – My favourite animal was the crocodile. I got my picture taken with it.
Brody – We went to the zoo. I was doing the Tassie Devil.
On November the 11th until November the 14th, Year 11, along with Mr Cole and Miss O’Neil, went to Adelaide
for their end of year trip. Although the trip was extremely fun, it was highly educational also. We visited Flinders
University, Uni SA, University of Adelaide and Saint Marks College. Going to these places was quite an eye
opener. We got to see what Uni life was like and the course that all the uni’s offer. We got to hear from present
students of the Uni and we also got to see what life would be like if living at Saint Marks College. As well as all
of this, we went rock climbing which was great fun, with almost every student participating. We went to the Adelaide zoo, we went to the beach, the Adelaide beach house and of course we went shopping. We had an amazing
time and on behalf of Year 11 I would like to thank Miss O’Neil and Mr Cole for coming along and putting up
with us and our taste in music. It’s safe to say that the teachers
have definitely heard the song “Anaconda”. We would also
like to thank Mr Steahr for organizing the trip as it is greatly
appreciated.

Last week the Year 11’s were part of the Kaniva College Work Experience Program or were gainfully
employed.
All of the students taking part in the Work Experience Program received great verbal reports and we are
looking forward to receiving the rest of their feedback sheets over the next week. These students really
do the school proud by their commitment to the placements they have chosen, the respect they show
their mentors and the enthusiasm they display.
Those gainfully employed spent the week under the direction of their employer and took on all the duties of any other employee in that role. These students either went working on various local or interstate
farms or for the West Wimmera Shire. I’m sure their help was greatly appreciated at this busy time of
the year.
This year’s Work Experience students got to learn how to prepare (and taste test) exquisite French patisseries, feed giraffes, collect water specimens and test in a laboratory, learn about marketing events, fix
tricky electrical problems, observe many of the allied health services available to our local community,
create photographic art, help hold wiggling puppies, pack and dispense medicine, attend wool sales and
learn how very busy offices work. One student got to work in a school whose primary section had a
larger student population than the whole of Kaniva!
We would like to thank the following businesses for taking such great care of our students, making a
difference to their career aspirations and strengthening their bonds with our school community.

French Corner. Another important day near
Christmas in France is La Fête des Rois,
which means the Feast of the Kings and
takes place on the 6th of January. In English
we often call it the Epiphany, but it is only
really celebrated in churches in Australia. It
marks the day when Christians believe that
the three wise men came to visit Jesus and
gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and
myrrh. In France it is a public holiday and
there are lots of festivities.
On La Fête des Rois, people eat a special
cake that is shaped a little bit like a crown.
It is called a gallette des rois. Somewhere
inside the cake is a bean or charm. Whoever
eats the piece of cake with the charm in it
gets to be the king or queen for the day.
They might get to wear a cape or a crown
and people will call out ‘vive le roi’ or ‘vive
la rene’ which means ‘long live the king’ or
‘long live the queen’.
This week one person’s name saint has a
feast day. Bonne fête to Riley in Year 2 for
tomorrow.
