A DJUSTING
THE L ENSES INTO THE
H EART
by Clint Fisher, Upper Elementary Principal
We have considered the need to listen deeply to the cry of the heart. We
have also considered the three basic desires of everyone's heart; namely
purpose, security, and fulfilment. In order to hear the cry of the heart, one
must spend a great deal of time observing and praying over a person's
actions. In order to do this, you must spend a great deal of time with the
person like a slow bake oven. We cannot fall prey to the 30 second microwave oven route that analyzes a fraction of the information and suggest that the child has a disorder or that they are simply lazy. We must go
beyond discounting the ability of the child based on some outer or inner
weakness. We must empower every child to live out their life and faith for
the glory of God to the best of their ability. Now the question remains,
"Practically, how do we do this?"
First, it is helpful to put on our reading glasses. God created us in his im(Continued on page 2)
age according to Genesis 1:26. When sin entered the world, this image was broken.
Truly, it shattered. However, Christ came into the world to redeem broken people like
me. He has also called us to be part of that redeeming work. The way we redeem
something is to reset it upon the purpose of glorifying God as it would have been before sin entered the world. This story of Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration
are the lenses by which we look at the world around us.
Secondly, we look back to the creation before sin to see what we should have been.
We see that we are created in the image of God. This does not mean that we were
equal with God. We are not all knowing, but there are ways we are like God. We are
creative, rational, relational, emotional, responsible, physical, and communicative to
mention a few. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it can provide us with a few
magnifying glasses to consider our lives. We asked why did God make us creative? How would we have used our
creativity before sin entered the world? How do we use our creativity now? A few questions like this can begin to
outline a rough map for our redemptive journey toward restoration. Questions like these can begin to open the
darkened doors of the soul.
In a few weeks, we will dive deeply into the relational category of the Imago Dei. Until then, consider what might
have been the purpose for God making us relational. How might we have lived out that relational characteristic
before sin? How do we use our relational abilities now? What is the path that will take us back to glorifying God in
that arena of our lives?
