L R C NBulletin LIBRARIANS’ REGISTRATION COUNCIL OF NIGERIA December, 2014 A PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR/CEO ISSN:2141-9388 Vol. 3 No.12 LRCN, IREX Engage with Stakeholders To Transform Public Libraries The International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) in collaboration with the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) held a twoday workshop at the LRCN Conference room on the 10th and 11th of November, 2014. The aim of the training was to form a group of stakeholders who have the same vision of a modern library as a strong development leader in the community. It sought to encourage libraries and librarians towards societal development especially in the areas of serving the community, modernizing the libraries through partnerships with developmental LRCN Registrar, DR. Victoria Okojie at the meeting organizations and urging the community to maximize the library by organizing developmental programmes and birthing technologically based projects slated to run through the year 2015. The workshop was facilitated by two resource persons: Mr Matej Novak, African Representative for Beyond Access and Miss Brenda Musasizi Musoke, National Coordinator for Uganda Community Library Association. The participants were guided on the structure of the expected projects and reporting formats. They were also briefed on success stories from similar projects from other regions in Africa. They were given time to brainstorm and seek avenues for collaboration as well as identify potential partners. The first edition of the workshop held at Kogi State Polytechnic. Lokoja in 2012 while the second edition was held at the UI in 2013. Registration of Participants ongoing Dr. Okojie presenting an address of welcome during the opening ceremony The four-day workshop was aimed to equip the information professionals and managers with competencies and skills that will enable them manage e-libraries in their institution and organizations for the attainment of the transformation agenda. Registrar/CEO of LRCN, Dr Victoria Okojie, said the Council is committed to ensuring that information professionals in Nigeria are at par with their counterparts in developed countries of the world. Representative of the Vice Chancellor University of Ibadan and Dean of Sciences, Professor Taiwo Farai said UI venue is most fitting for the workshop because the University of Ibadan's library is the only library that operates 24 hours a day in Nigeria. Part the workshop's objective is to guide librarians and Information Managers on how e-library services can aid transformation in the education sector. Other issues discussed at the workshop include basic steps for establishing an e-library and the application of Social Media in Libraries including M-Technology and M- Learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Management of e-library Resources; internet Search Strategies for Research and Creating an elibrary: case studies were addressed.
