That’s why learning how to prevent it is so important. Knowing how to prevent identity theft makes your identity more secure. The more people who know how to prevent identity theft, the less inclined others may be to commit the crime. Preventing identity theft starts with managing your personal information carefully and sensibly. Here are a few simple precautions to keep your personal information safe: Register at your local senior center! $12.00 per person Tickets includes: Opening ceremony, registration in as many events as you wish, Senior Winter Games T-shirt and a closing ceremony banquet Opening Ceremony~ • Not carrying extra credit cards, your Social Security card, birth certificate or passport with you outside the house can help you prevent identity theft. • Keep new checks out of the mail. When ordering new checks, you can prevent identity theft by picking them up at the bank instead of having them sent to your home. This makes it harder for your checks to be stolen, altered and cashed by identity thieves. • Be careful when giving out personal When: Monday, February 2, 2015 at 1:00 pm Where: Davison Area Senior Center Events~ February 2—February 26, 2015 Closing Ceremony & Banquet~ information over the phone. When: Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 11:00 am Where: Davison Knights of Columbus Hall Identity thieves may call, posing as banks or government agencies. To prevent identity theft, do not give out personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call. • Your trash is their treasure. Shred your receipts, credit card offers, bank statements, returned checks and any other sensitive information before throwing it away. • Make sure others are keeping you safe. Ensure that your employer, landlord and anyone else with access to your personal data keeps your records safe. • Protect your Social Security Number. Make sure your bank does not print your Social Security Number on your personal checks. • Follow your credit card billing cycles closely. Identity thieves can start by changing your billing address. Making sure you receive your credit card bill every month is an easy way to prevent identity theft. • Keep a list of account numbers, expiration Senior Winter Games of Genesee County Announces 6 Major Sponsors for 2015: Caretel Inns of Linden, Filippis Foundation, First Merit Bank, HealthPlus MedicarePlus, UAW Region 1-C, Valley Area Agency on Aging Programs/Services are fully or partially funded by Genesee County Senior Millage funds. “Your tax dollars at work” Van Rides with the Centers Van REMINDER: If you are wanting a ride with the Senior Centers Van you must call in by 1:30 p.m. to schedule it the day before the ride is needed. Many of the everyday actions we take are our best defense in keeping ourselves healthy. Take the following precautions to reduce illness: • Wash hands often with soap and water. Rub hands together quickly for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to wash under fingernails, between fingers, and the backs of hands and wrists. • Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu shot every year. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth because germs spread this way. • If you or your child are sick with fever or vomiting stay home for at least 24 hours after your symptoms are gone. • Cough into your elbow and not into your hands. • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible. • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs. • Get the proper amount of sleep your body needs to stay healthy. Adults should have 7-8 hours per night and school aged children should get at least 10 hours. • Eat a healthy balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. • Exercise regularly, thirty minutes of moderate exercise five times a week is beneficial. • Try to limit your level of stress. When an individual is stressed it weakens the immune system’s ability to fight off infection. Last winter in Genesee County we experienced severe winter storms and prolonged power outages. Before the weather gets bad it is important for us to evaluate our emergency supplies and think about what we may need to stock or replace. Make sure to include: • Water, a gallon per person per day • Foods such as nuts, energy bars, and nonperishables • A hand held can opener • Battery powered radio with extra batteries • Flashlights with extra batteries • First aid kit • Duct tape • Garbage bags and moist wipes • A good multi-tool with pliers • Cell phone with charger. Remember to include supplies for your pets, and any special needs your family may have. If you experienced one of those storms or power outages last winter think about what you needed during that time so you can include it in your kit. Also, establish an out of town emergency contact person. Pick a friend or relative far enough away that they will not be affected by the same weather. Make sure that every family member has the emergency contact’s information. It is important that your contact person be out of town, because local calls are more likely to be disrupted. For more detailed information on emergency supplies creating a plan, and how to stay safe during winter storms visit www.ready.gov.
