“Spirited Seniors” - A Senior Ministry
Second Tuesday Each Month • 11:30 a.m. at St. John—Pavilion
The Spirited Senior Ministry is open to members of the parish who are 55 years old or older and their spouses. The Ministry meets
on the second Tuesday of the month beginning at 11:30 a.m. for lunch. There is a $10 donation accepted to offset the cost of lunch,
but the donation is waived for anyone unable to contribute. Lunch is followed by a guest speaker or entertainer and a short business
meeting ending by 1:30 p.m. The Ministry does not meet in June and has an outing to a Reds game in August. For additional information, contact Joanne or Marty McClain at 513.779.3575 or by email at [email protected].

“Immigration Issues and Catholic Social Teaching”
Monday, October 20 • 7-8:30 p.m. at St. John—Favret Hall
Fr. Mike Pucke, Pastor of St. Julie Billiart parish, will come to address the issue of “Immigration.” About 12 years ago
the Archdiocese established a Hispanic Ministry Center for Butler County and environs at St. Julie. Over the years the
parish has made slow steady progress toward integrating the Spanish-speakers into the total life of the Parish. Fr. Mike
will examine the reality of immigration around the world through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching. Furthermore,
he will share his experiences serving the Hispanic community in Hamilton, as well as his five years as a missionary in Chile. These
ministries have given Fr. Mike a unique and insightful perspective on the suffering and challenges facing the immigrant community.
Ultimately, we will be challenged to explore a Christian response to this complex issue.

“Exploring the Joy of the Gospel: The Teaching of Pope Francis”
Wednesday, November 5 • 7–8:30 p.m. at St. John—Chapel
Since the first day on which Pope Francis took office, he has impressed the world with his simple message
of mercy, service, and renewal. His gestures of compassion and kindness have reached every corner of our
world. Now, however, we also have access to the mind and heart of Pope Francis in the words of his recent
letter—“The Joy of the Gospel”—which he has directed to the entire Christian community. It communicates
his dream for our Church and our world. Please join us on Wednesday, November 5, at 7 p.m., when we will
examine this beautiful letter together, with the help of Fr. Dan Hartnett, S.J., Pastor of Bellarmine Parish
(Xavier University). Prior to this assignment, Fr. Dan worked for over twenty years among the poor in Lima
(Peru). He was later appointed to the Considine Chair in Applied Ethics at Loyola University Chicago where
he taught for over ten years.

Do you know someone who has drifted away from the Church? Most of us don’t have to look very far to find non-practicing Catholics
in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these loved ones, but we don’t know how to help them. Obviously,
most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way home? As baptized, practicing Catholics, we have a precious
gift of faith and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and sisters. First, we need to pray for
them. Next, we need to extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Most are just waiting for an
invitation to return—mistakenly, they think they’ve been excommunicated and are not welcome to return for a variety of reasons.
Are negative feelings toward the Church or its members keeping our brothers and sisters away? Many carry with them a tremendous
amount of guilt and misinformation about the Church and are afraid of approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. You can
make a dramatic difference in someone’s life simply by reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them and want them to

been married for over 33 years. They have two adult married children, a son and a daughter, giving them an additional son-in-law and daughter-in-law as well as four grandchildren, ages three and under. The Carusos joined St.
John Parish when they moved to West Chester during the summer of 1992 and remain extremely grateful to share
in the St. John Parish community. A fee of $15 per couple is due in advance which covers the costs for a delicious, catered meal. Bring

“Couple Communication: Moving Forward Together”

Couple Communication is an easy-to-learn, award-winning educational program that both partners participate in together. As a
couple, you learn 11 communication skills for talking, listening, making decisions, and resolving conflicts together effectively. Since
its beginning at the University of Minnesota Family Study Center, over 700,000 couples around the world have participated in this
theoretically grounded and well researched program. Through this program you can expect to: (1)Develop confidence that you can
communicate effectively together; (2) Create faster, better resolutions to conflicts; (3) Increase satisfaction in your relationship; (4)
Expand understanding of yourself and your partner; and (5) Reduce disagreements and tension. Dr. Tom Giordano is our speaker.

“Care for God’s Creation and Our Response This Earth Day” event, organized by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati,
will educate attendees about the Catholic teaching as it relates to protecting God’s creation and orientate them to
the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor. It will also provide practical tips and resources on how
both parish facilities and households can improve their energy efficiency, protect the environment, and lower their
utility bills.

Christ Renews His Parish - CRHP is an effective spiritual renewal process which calls together the members of the parish in order

Adult Confirmation Preparation - Are you a baptized Catholic adult still in need of Confirmation? Confirmation of baptized Catholic adults will occur on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, at the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Weekly formation/preparation meetings for the sacrament
will be held on Wednesday evenings during the Lent and Easter seasons from 7-8:30 p.m. in Room D (basement of Favret Hall). Call

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES:
RCIA- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a formation opportunity that affords participants the opportunity to grow in their
relationship with God. Primarily it is designed to help non-Catholic adults discern whether or not the Lord is calling them to become
fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. If they choose to become a Catholic, they will be initiated at the Easter Vigil Mass on
April 4, 2015. The process is also for adult Catholics wishing to grow in their own Catholic faith, and to serve as spiritual companions
for the Candidates. Starting September 18, meetings will be held in Spirit House from 7-9 p.m. almost every Thursday evening until
shortly after Easter. If interested, or if you have questions, please call Deacon Jerry Barney at 777-6433, ext. 121.
Small Church Communities (Faith Sharing Groups) - Small groups meet periodically in the intimate setting of a parishioner’s
home. The times, dates, and frequency of meetings is determined by each group. Various resources are used to enable the participants
to share their faith journeys with each other. The possible forming of new groups that have been suggested are: (1) Mothers of school
age children meet during school hours while their children are away; (2) Family members of “active duty” military personnel; (3) “Post

Bible Study - St. John uses the “Little Rock Scripture Study” program. It uses a Bible commentary and a faith reflection book to help
participants understand and apply the meaning of the Bible to their daily faith lives. The cost is only $9 per study. Groups meet weekly
