National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)
After successful completion of the CPCS Technical Test candidates are issued with the Red Trained Operator Card. The
red card lasts for just 2 years and in this time card holders are required to undertake the relevant NVQ to upgrade to the
Blue Competent Operator card. Blue cards have a 5 year validity. Although it is a mandatory part of the CPCS scheme
the NVQ is a standalone qualification awarded by the Construction Awards Alliance which endorses competence in the
workplace.
Ainscough Training Services is an accredited centre for NVQs. We can take you every step of the way to ensure you
attain the qualification you need. As an employee assessment service we provide competence based qualifications for
those working with lifting equipment in various industrial sectors.
These qualifications can be used throughout your working life and can be taken from site to site with the knowledge that
it shows the employer you are competent and able to work to recognised industry standards.
When the time is right for you to climb the ladder of promotion, the qualification gives proof you have reached a certain
standard within your occupation.
To match the individual needs of the employer we can also design and deliver bespoke assessments for example those
who undertake lifting operations on an infrequent basis. Contact us for more information on how we can help you with
your requirements.
What is an NVQ?
National Vocational Qualifications are competence based and are achieved in the workplace. They demonstrate your
ability at work by recognising the skills, knowledge, ability, training and experience required to perform a job safely and
in an effective and efficient manner
All vocational qualifications are now grouped together in different levels on the Qualification and Credit Framework
(QCF). This educational framework is designed to make vocational qualifications easier to understand and simpler to
use. It has been developed to work more closely with employers to make qualifications more relevant to what learners
need to succeed in their chosen profession.
The QCF provides a framework for learners to progress. There are varying levels ranging from Entry to Level 8. Credits
are allocated based on the amount of learning required to complete the qualification. This also defines the qualification
size- Award, Certificate or Diploma.
NVQ assessment recognises your performance at work with a nationally recognised qualification. All skills are assessed
through work based evidence and because there are no exams or tests certification is based purely on evidence of your
skills.
How do I get an NVQ?
The first step is an induction with an assessor who will fully explain the qualification and what you will need to do to
achieve it. You will be asked to gather work-based evidence such as job sheets, time sheets, delivery notes etc. These
are then compiled and assessed by your assessor. The assessor will arrange a mutually convenient time to carry out a
direct observation of you carrying out your normal work.
Once the assessor is satisfied that you have met the entire standard he/she will deem you competent and certification
along with the application form for the blue CPCS card will be issued. This certificate is issued by the Construction
Awards Alliance and will be endorsed with the category of lifting equipment you were assessed operating in a competent
manner.
Ainscough Training Services' assessors specialise in lifting operations and have many years job related experience.
They have worked as Crane Operators and Slinger/Signallers as well as acting as the Appointed Person and Crane
Supervisors on many lifting projects. They will guide and support you every step of the way to help you achieve your
NVQ in a timely manner. With dedicated admin support we will make sure the conversion from red to blue is as easy and
stress-free as possible.

OVERVIEW
CPCS Red Trained Operator cards last for 2 years. To stay in the CPCS scheme cardholders must prove
your competence by completing a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in order to obtain the blue
competent operator card. There are two ways to do this, via the OSAT route or EWPA route. Successful
completion of either route will result in a recognised qualification issued by Construction Awards Alliance
(CAA). Ainscough Training Services is a CAA accredited assessment centre and we offer an assessment
and verification service for candidates looking to achieve their NVQ through either route.
ON SITE ASSESSMENT (OSAT)
This route is the traditional method which involves gathering work based evidence and being observed on
site during normal work activity. A portfolio of evidence is then compiled and signed off by the assessor.
The assessment will be undertaken in the workplace so candidates are not taken away from site at any
time. Depending on how often the candidate is working in the chosen discipline and how quickly they can
gather the evidence this method usually takes between 3 and 6 months to complete.
TARGET DELEGATES
OSAT is aimed at delegates who are working in their chosen discipline and are able to gather evidence of
their work such as job sheets, method statements, risk assessments etc. This is the best route for
delegates who do not perform well under test conditions and would prefer to complete the qualification over
a period of time with advice and guidance from a NVQ assessor. This is the only route to be taken if the
candidate holds a red card for Appointed Person and Crane Supervisor. For more detailed information
please see the outlines and cost sheets for each qualification.
EXPERIENCED WORKER PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT (EWPA)
This assessment process will take place over two separate days. It involves employer witness testimonies
and endorsement, knowledge questioning, professional discussion and a practical assessment. This
assessment method is carried out at our test site.
TARGET DELEGATES
Anybody wishing to follow the EWPA route must have a minimum of 2 years experience in the chosen
discipline and have no further training needs. Candidates must also have the ability to cope with an
intensive assessment process and to discuss work activities with others. This assessment route is ideal for
those candidates who meet the aforementioned criteria but are unable to arrange an onsite assessment or
gather sufficient evidence to complete the portfolio. For more detailed information please see separate
EWPA outline and costs sheet.

This programme is aimed at individuals who hold a red CPCS card and need to achieve the relevant NVQ in order to
convert to a Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card. Delegates must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in their
chosen discipline. The assessment route is aimed at operatives who are unable to arrange an onsite assessment or to
gather sufficient evidence to complete the portfolio. Delegates must also have the ability to cope with an intensive
assessment process and to discuss their work with others.
OVERVIEW
EWPA was introduced to provide an alternative to the traditional OSAT (on site assessment and training) method. It is
used to assess experienced learners who would prefer to demonstrate their competence using a one-off practical
assessment. It is ideal for experienced delegates who are unable to gather sufficient evidence for the portfolio or arrange
an on-site assessment.
The assessment is based on five contributing items:
-
Witness Testimony (for each unit)
Employer Endorsement
Practical Assessment
Professional Discussion (one-to-one with an assessor)
Knowledge questioning (one-to-one discussion with an assessor)
The assessment will take place over two separate days. On the first day delegates will meet with the assessor and
profiling and induction will take place. The employer is then required to provide witness testimonies for the delegate’s
work. On a separate, pre-arranged day the delegate will attend our test site for the assessment. The practical
assessment will take place under test conditions and will be followed by a professional discussion with the assessor.
During this discussion the assessor will explore the evidence provided by witness testimony and employer endorsement
to check the validity and authenticity. Feedback on the whole assessment will be given to the candidate by the assessor.
CERTIFICATION
On successful completion of the qualification certificates of achievement will be issued from the awarding body; Cskills
Awards. Provided the candidate has an in date Operatives Health & Safety Test the Blue Competent Operator Card can
then be applied for. These cards last for 5 years.
