SOUPED UP TRAVERS CARD HIGHLIGHTS SPA
‘15 SCHEDULE The New York Racing Association has
released its stakes schedule for the 2015 Saratoga
Race Course meet, which is highlighted by an enhanced
card for the $1.25-million GI Travers S. Aug. 29. The
Saturday program will feature five additional Grade I
affairs, including the grassy, 12-furlong Sword Dancer
S., offering a doubled purse of $1 million. The
$750,000 GI Personal Ensign S. for distaffers and
$700,000 Forego S. for male sprinters--both with
purses of $500,000 in 2014--have also been added to
the Travers card, joining the $500,000 Ballerina S. for
female sprinters and $500,000 King=s Bishop S. for
3-year-olds at seven furlongs. The $400,000 GII
Ballston Spa S. will also be held Aug. 29.
"We have made improvements to Travers Day to
keep in line with the creation of our 'must-see' events,"
said Martin Panza, Senior Vice President of Racing
Operations for the New York Racing Association. "We
are developing Travers Day into a national event--a mini
Breeders' Cup--by increasing the purses for the Personal
Ensign and the Forego. By including the Sword Dancer
and raising the purse to $1 million, we hope to create
international involvement in that race."
The 40-day meet begins Friday, July 24 and runs
through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7 with a total of
69 stakes offering record purses of $18.7 million. After
opening weekend, racing will take place six days a
week, Wednesday through Monday.
The 1 3/8-mile, $250,000 GII Bowling Green S. has
been moved from Belmont to Saratoga, and will be held
Aug. 1 as a prep for the Sword Dancer. The $100,000
Bolton Landing S. for juvenile fillies going 5 1/2
furlongs on the grass Aug. 19, and the $100,000
Schenectady S. for colts Aug. 21, are also new
additions. "Both of these 2-year-old turf stakes were
created with a look ahead to the Breeders' Cup," noted
Panza. Cont. p3

beaten 6 1/4 lengths--in the GI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf

pace while three deep. She tugged her way closer while
four wide past the stands for the first time, and
appeared to be up against it when pilot John Velazquez
began to ask her for more into the final bend. She came
alive to take over into the straight, shrugged off
challenges from Always Kitten (Kitten=s Joy) and Photo
Call, and found the line with a sliver of daylight to spare
over stablemate Tabreed. "[Irish Mission is] going to be
bred in the spring of 2015, so maybe she can run once

Clement revealed. AThe other filly [Tabreed] is going to

because the owner of Tabreed [Teo Ah Khing] owns a

Trakus Fact: La Prevoyante winner Irish
Mission covered more ground than all but one

happy he drew outside. Historically, I=ve never trained a

AShe had a tough trip at Del Mar,@ confirmed Gaines
of the winner. AShe was bottled up today, but at least
he [Victor Espinoza] snuck through. He went a bit wide
but they got the job done. I=m so excited.@ Winning pilot
Victor Espinoza added, AI took a shot. I saved ground.
There was a bunch of horses that I was in between. I
didn=t think about it too much beforehand. It was one
of those races that I had to take step-by-step. A
Bayern, ‘Chrome’ Work Towards Seasonal Debuts...
Leading 3-year-olds Bayern (Offlee Wild) and
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) worked Saturday as
they prepare for their respective 2015 debuts, which
could come in Santa Anita=s Feb. 7 $500,000 GII San
Antonio S.--an event that could also feature Friday=s
GI Malibu S. hero Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}).
Kaleem Shah=s J “TDN Rising Star” J Bayern,
last seen surviving an inquiry in the GI Breeders= Cup
Classic in Arcadia Nov. 1, covered four panels over that
strip yesterday in :47.80 (13/61).
AHe went nice,@ trainer Bob Baffert said of Bayern. AI
took the blinkers off so he could work slower, so that
was good, but I=ll put them back on when he runs.@
The Hall of Famer added, AI haven=t really decided on
his next race. I=m just getting him ready. The [Mar. 28
G1 Dubai World Cup] is being considered. That=s why I
didn=t run him in the Malibu... But the Meydan track in
Dubai now is totally different.
AI=ve got see how it plays once they start running
there. With the new dirt, you don=t know what=s going
to happen. I won=t make the decision until I have to.@
Steven Coburn and Perry Martin=s California Chrome,
meanwhile, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.60 (5/15) at
his Los Alamitos base.
AHe worked great,@ said trainer Art Sherman=s son and
assistant, Alan Sherman. AThe San Antonio should be a
great race if everything comes together.@
The GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. winner
was a close third in the Breeders= Cup Classic, and
displayed his versatility with a two-length score in Del
Mar=s GI Hollywood Derby Nov. 29.
Taris Sidelined After La Brea...
J “TDN Rising Star” J Taris (Flatter), a valiant
second in Friday=s GI La Brea S., exited the race with
non-displaced condylar fracture and will be sidelined for
the beginning of 2015, Daily Racing Form reports. The
bay romped by nine lengths in Keeneland=s GII Lexus
Raven Run S. Oct. 18 before selling to the Coolmore
partners for $2.35 million at Fasig-Tipton November.
The La Brea was Taris=s first start for her new owners
and Simon Callaghan, having previously been
conditioned by Todd Beattie. Callaghan told DRF that
the soon-to-be-4-year-old will spend 90 days at
Coolmore=s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., and will
undergo surgery Monday.

TDN COUNTS DOWN THE TOP SHARES OF 2014
What were the most popular stories we published in
2014? Over five days, we are re-running the five mostread TDN stories of the year, determined by the number
of times TDN readers clicked on the shared link or
shared the stories with others, above and beyond the
traditional number of PDF downloads.
Yesterday, we published Number 5, with 4,915 hits-Andrew Caulfield=s Pedigree Insights on California
Chrome, two months before he=d make Kentucky Derby
history, which appeared in the Tuesday, March11
edition of the TDN and can be read here.
Number 4, with 5,638 views, is a letter to the editor
written by Gretchen Jackson in the Saturday, March 22
edition of the TDN, submitted in the immediate
aftermath of the PETA allegations against trainer Steve
Asmussen.
We spent minutes stopping traffic on a busy country
road because of a loose dog. She was small, dirty,
covered with sores, and her teats swaying from a
recent litter. She finally shot down a side road and we
spent time trying to catch her in someone's yard. Police
arrived. They chased her
which led to her being
even more afraid and
vicious, snapping at us as
we tried to capture her.
She ran under a pickup
truck. A good idea as we
could not reach her. Now
a state trooper arrived he
Gretchen Jackson
donned huge padded
TCA photo
gloves perfect for
barbecuing, but still could not get her. My son-in-law
drove by, parked and got a racquet out of his car to use
to push her to a spot where she could be grasped. Two
vets going to lunch from the New Bolton Center drew
off the road to check out what was going on. Dr. Smith
from field service asked some questions and went back
to his truck to get some tranquilizer, which he was able
to squirt in the dog's eyes.
This worked, making her docile enough to through a
blanket over her and grasp her. She still was able to
bite someone in the hand. Mission accomplished.
This is what I am surrounded with. People who care
about animals, go out of their way to help animals and
vets giving of their time and knowledge to aid in the
welfare of animals. This was a group of caring people
looking out for an animals welfare. There are just such
people in racing right now.
What has happened to racing? Has the picture
changed? Have the people involved forgotten about
training and are just training the vet to be the
brewmeister and get the horse to the races no matter
what? Have they forgotten that the horse is an animal,
a living creature with a heart? Who hasn't seen a horse
do the impossible, finding more power in the final
strides to the wire? What are the owners thinking of? Is
the picture in the winner=s circle worth breaking rules
and pain? If all that purse money is all that counts,
even more meaningful than the horse, more valuable
than the horse=s condition or the jockey's neck? Please
go into Nascar where you can change a tire without
hurting anybody.
There are lots of people in racing that love their
horses. They even might consider them part of their
family. These are the people that should be in racing.
They should not have to suffer the stigma that those
who don't care about horses place on racing. No one
wants to come to the track and see an accident. Nor
does anyone want to back a chemical horse. It is way
over due that all the committees that have been formed
and agencies, commissions, groups, clubs, etc stop
talking and go about doing. Some groups will have to
step down in order to form a strong national racing
policy that has a clear plan of enforcement. This is the
only way to create a force that can and will bring about
change. This should have happened long ago but now if
it doesn't happen it will be adios to racing. It is my
opinion that we are in need of officials that are not
codependent nor are they in denial. We all must enter
into a new era of racing. Not all are responsible for
racings plight, but we who are in racing are all
responsible for bringing about change.

*Japanese tote as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday
Epiphaneia, a son of GI American Oaks victress
Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}), hit the board in all
three legs of the Japanese Triple Crown in 2013,
finishing runner-up in the G1 2000 Guineas and
G1 Japanese Derby before running away with the
G1 Japanese St Leger. He=ll be having just his third
start this prep after staying on to be fifth in the
G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) Nov. 2 ahead of his fourlength tally in the Japan Cup last time out.
AIt=ll come down again to how well he can settle,@
admitted trainer Katsuhiko Sumii. ABut he=s had two
races this fall, so mentally--as well as physically--he
should be easier to prepare. The racetrack doesn=t
exactly suit him by all means, but he=s in good
condition. We=re praying he can run like the way he did
in the Japan Cup.@
Gold Ship won the Arima Kinen at age three in 2012
and was a distant third to the runaway Orfevre (Jpn)
(Stay Gold {Jpn}) in defense of his title 12 months ago.
Victorious in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen in late June, the
popular gray was runner-up in the G2 Sapporo Kinen
Aug. 24, but was a well-beaten 14th in the Arc last
time out.
Gentildonna, one of seven in the race for 2006 Arima
Kinen hero Deep Impact, also bids farewell to the races
today. The 5-year-old overcame traffic in the stretch to
become the third Japanese winner of the G1 Dubai
Sheema Classic this past March and was runner-up in
the Tenno Sho, but could do no better than fourth as
the 5-2 favorite when in search of a third consecutive
score in the Japan Cup a month ago.
AThey=re going to hold a ceremony for her after the
race, and I wanted the fans to have one last
opportunity to see her,@ trainer Sei Ishizaki commented.
AShe=s worked abreast last week and this week, so she
is ready to give it everything she=s got.@
Of the 16 runners in the Arima Kinen, only To the
World and Epiphaneia are not grandsons or
granddaughters of Sunday Silence.

Catalina Red
a half in :44.54 before
Tampa Bay Downs
being let loose approaching
the far turn. It was a two-horse race between the
flashy chestnut and his old rival X Y Jet in the lane, but
Catalina Red would not let that foe get the better of
him this time and dug down deep for a gutsy victory
that broke the previous track record of 1:22.03. AI was
very concerned because [X Y Jet] had an easy lead and
no one was pushing him,@ winning trainer Chad Stewart
said. AI had faith in my horse and a lot of faith in
[jockey] Danny [Centeno], but I almost thought he was
sitting too chilly. But Danny can really pick one up and
carry him on down and that=s what happened. He
showed a lot of heart today.@ Centeno added, A[X Y Jet]
was going fast up front and I had to use my horse a
little sooner than I wanted. We were really in stride
getting into the stretch and I expected to get past
easily, but he battled with us every step and it was
only at the wire we edged clear. My horse had to be
game to win today, and he can only get better.@ Click for

the dark bay was overlooked by the bettors in this step
up to black-type company. Racing in fifth through a

a neck by Kiss Moon
(Malibu Moon) in the Ta Wee S. over a mile at Indiana
Grand Oct. 4. Most recently, the 3-year-old chased
Yahilwa (Medaglia d=Oro) home in Delta Downs=
Treasure Chest S. over a mile Nov. 22, an effort good
enough to establish her heavy favorite for this event
rained off the turf. Away alertly, Kiss to Remember
tracked Divine Beauty through a half-mile in :48.90 and
bid for the lead two wide turning for home. The
chestnut dispatched of the pace-setter in mid-stretch
and dug in to hold safe a comfortable margin on the
wire. A[Kiss to Remember] has been very good to us,@
said winning trainer Tom Amoss, who captured the
Woodchopper S. earlier on the card with Rise Up
(Rockport Harbor). A A lot of that is development and
luck and who knows if it=s going to turn out that way,
but it did.[Owner] Maggi [Moss] spotted the horse like I
did and as far as today=s race goes, we had a strategy
and it worked out for us. This filly has some distance
limitations and a mile is probably it. Those were some
good horses who beat her when she was second. I
would not be surprised to see her return to sprinting
after this.@ Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO.

+JACK HOBBS (GB) (c, 2, Halling--Swain=s Gold
{SW-US}, by Swain {Ire}), a 60,000gns TATOCT
yearling, dwelt as the gates opened and was rousted
along to sit in fourth after the early exchanges of this
unveiling. Coming under pressure when sent up to
challenge rounding the home turn, the even-money
favorite led in early stretch and drifted left under
urging, but was comfortably on top in the closing
stages to score by three lengths from Dutch Uncle (GB)
(Dutch Art {GB}). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, ,2,911.

HEADWATER (AUS) (c, 2, Exceed and Excel {Aus}-River Dove {Aus}, by Hurricane Sky {Aus}), an
A$500,000 Inglis Easter yearling acquisition by Hawkes
Racing, was the latest juvenile buzz horse on the
strength of a couple of barrier trial wins and was sent
off the 2-5 favorite to live up to the advance billing.
Away on terms, Headwater was part of a three-way
battle for the early lead, but eased back to allow chief
market rival Lucky Fish (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus})
to lead outright through the middle stages. Allowed to
cruise up to the leader with about a quarter mile to
race, the heavy chalk soon had a couple of lengths on
his rivals and proved 2 3/4 lengths better than Stoker
(Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) at the line. "It's always
good to get the first one out of the road," co-trainer
Wayne Hawkes told AAP. AHe's a high-class horse. I
think he was in second gear. He's done a great job and
he's a real professional 2-year-old with a huge, fat
pedigree." Winning jockey James Winks believes there
is even better to come. "He's still a big kid, but what
he's doing now is a little bit frightening compared to
when he goes for a spell and comes back," Winks told
AAP. Headwater, whose dam won the 2003 G1
Oakleigh Plate, is a 3/4-brother to year-older stablemate
Emaratee (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), an A$4-million
purchase by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa who is
nearing his racecourse debut for the Hawkeses. VIDEO.
