furlongs over the Santa Anita main track Oct. 11, Ocho
Ocho Ocho rallied professionally from third to score by
a length and was sent off the 4-5 chalk for the
Juvenile Turf Sprint in the Breeders= Cup Saturday
opener when it was washed onto the main track.
Despite arguing fast fractions of :21.46 and :43.96,
the dark bay streaked home by 5 3/4 lengths,

Wake Up Nick (Cindago) stumbled leaving the stalls,
but showed early speed, only to be overtaken by
Conquest Tsunami (Stormy Atlantic) and the well-bet
Prime Engine (Northern Afleet). Mr. Z raced by his
lonesome in third, and Mike Smith took advantage and
dropped Ocho Ocho Ocho down into a ground-saving
spot in fourth. The pacesetters dueled on a nearsuicidal pace of :22.27 for the opening two furlongs.
Mr. Z shaded Ocho Ocho Ocho for third, and while that
one went up three wide to vie for the lead at the halfmile marker, Smith sent the favorite up the fence to
lead inside of Prime Engine entering the turn. Under a
head=s-up move by Paco Lopez, the Zayat runner
loomed up three deep to lead at the quarter pole, but
Ocho Ocho Ocho responded in kind, took command just
inside the eighth pole and outfought Mr. Z to the
money. Far Right was detached from the field early
with no visible excuse, but made a monster middle
move into contention down the backstretch. He went
for a run inside of the eventual winner nearing the
stretch, but was checked hard at the quarter pole, lost
some momentum and re-rallied late to be third. A
subsequent claim of foul was disallowed. The winner=s
third dam is the incomparable undefeated champion
Personal Ensign.

With the aggressive Paco Lopez taking over at the
controls for the first time, Take Charge Brandi was off
a half-step slow in the Princess, but that allowed Lopez
to concede the lead to My Trusty Cat S. romper Vivian
Da Bling (Too Much Bling), who crossed and cleared
and covered the opening quarter-mile in a strong
:22.34. Take Charge Brandi was breathing down the
neck of Vivian Da Bling with the half-mile posted in
:46.44 as the maiden Skipalute improved from
between rivals to be a menacing third. The pacemaker
hoisted the white flag and Take Charge Brandi was in
front with two furlongs to race, but Skipalute
continued to be a menace as they took the sharp turn
into the stretch. But the favorite accelerated nicely off
the turn and stayed on gamely to the line. Majestic
Presence, about four wide into the first turn, saved
some ground down the backstretch, but was a bit onepaced late and settled for third.
Take Charge Brandi is the second foal to race from
Charming, a daughter of champion Will Take Charge=s
dam MGISW Take Charge Lady (Dehere), who cost
$3.2 million as a Keeneland September yearling in
2006. Horton, who gave $425,000 at the 2011
September sale for Will Take Charge, liked Take Charge
Brandi about $10,000 more, going to $435,000 at
Keeneland last September. Horton also acquired a War
Front half-sister to Take Charge Brandi for $1.25
million at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga this past summer.

When they last met in the Kentucky Downs Ladies=
Turf S. Sept. 13, I=m Already Sexy (Ready=s Image)
was the even-money favorite to the near 6-1 about
Strike Charmer. It was 8-5 on the expected pacesetter
yesterday, but double digits on Strike Charmer, who
pounced late to register the upset. A maiden winner
over this course and distance in June 2013, Strike
Charmer was a close fourth in a Saratoga allowance a
couple months later and closed the season with a
runner-up effort beneath the Twin Spires in September.

The homebred, whose dam was third in this track=s
GII Mrs. Revere S. in 2007, took her first start off an
eight-month absence here May 25 and was fifth back
at the Spa Aug. 2. She added blinkers and dead-heated
for second in upstate New York Aug. 18 ahead of her
effort in Franklin last time out, where she was three
lengths back at the wire. I=m Already Sexy won the
break and set off by her lonesome through apparently
even sectionals of :23.82 and :47.69 and strung out
her rivals behind her. She was given a bit of a breather
by Calvin Borel and backed the pace down a bit to
leave the three-eighths marker behind in 1:13 flat, but
they were taking closer order and Strike Charmer had
slid up the fence from fourth to be in striking distance
at the head of the stretch. The Courtlandt runner
engaged and raced past the pacesetter at the threesixteenths marker with relative ease and outfinished
Pappascat for the victory. Antonia Autumn rounded out
a $14,877 trifecta. "I've got to give [winning trainer]
Dave [Carroll] a lot of the credit,@ offered jockey Chris
Landeros. AThe way she's been training and the way
she presented herself today, gosh, that's what
separates the good ones from the mediocre ones. It
was a blessing to get on her. She was very impressive
today. Everything she did was 110%. I got a little split
when I needed it to. It was just a great trip. When you
have the horse, it makes your job a lot easier."

AEven the fractions were almost exactly the same.
When I saw them go in almost :25 and then the :51
and change, I was like >Oh my God. It=s over.= He

dropped a head decision to that one in the Aug. 24
West Point S., but turned the table on that rival with a
determined neck score in the Ashley T. Cole S. at
Belmont Sept. 14 and was exiting a runner-up effort to
Kharafa in the Mohawk S. on Long Island Oct. 18.
Taking advantage of his low draw in two, Brice Blanc
dropped Lubash into a midfield fourth, three back on
the fence, as Canadian raider Reporting Star put about
five lengths on the field as they raced with one circuit
remaining. Ridden cold by the Frenchman while
clipping the hedge down the backstretch, Lubash took
his cue leaving the three-eighths pole and was ready to
roll at the head of the lane.
Steered out perfectly around Lochte (Medaglia d=Oro)
in upper stretch, Lubash responded to mostly handsand-heels encouragement from Blanc and pegged back
Reporting Star in the final 70 yards for an ultimately
comfortable victory. AHis last race was so good, I
decided to come here for the stakes before he is turned

A change of scenery, equipment change and a new
trainer helped vault Three Hearts to a career high here.
Three Hearts, a half-sister to 2010 GII Breeders' Cup
Juvenile Turf hero Pluck (More Than Ready), closed out
her tenure for Graham Motion with a Keeneland
allowance victory in April 2013, her most recent trip to
the winner=s circle. Transferred to Rick Mettee, Three
Hearts was a close third in last term=s GIII Virginia Oaks
in July, then was placed on the shelf for 12 months.
She made three starts since in 2014--all $62,500
optional claimers in New York--most recently pairing up
fourth-place finishes at Saratoga Aug. 18 and Sept. 1,
respectively. Making her first attempt for Hall of Famer
Neil Drysdale with blinkers off and beyond nine
furlongs here, she was placed in a perfect spot in fifth
beneath Joe Talamo through a half mile in :49.52.
Three Hearts continued to draft nicely in fourth as they
made their way around the final turn, gained a narrow
advantage at the top of the stretch and dug in gamely
to prevail for a narrow score while setting the tote a
blaze. This win particular came full circle for
owner/breeder Team Valor=s Barry Irwin. His first
stakes winner as a syndicate manager came by the
way of Political Ambition, who was also trained by
Drysdale. The date? November 22, 1987. The winner=s
dam passed away this past July in Kentucky.

The veteran Western Australian mare Elite Belle
pushed her earnings past the million-dollar mark while
earning a first Group 1 win with a gutsy score in
yesterday=s G1 Railway S. Crying out for racing room
while traveling worse than midpack heading into the
closing stages of the race, Elite Belle and jockey
William Pike at last found the opening they needed and
surged to the front inside the final 200 meters. "I=d
started to watch [and get] despondent,@ trainer Grant
Williams told Sky Racing World. "I thought we had too
many horses to get through. In the corner of my eye, I
saw a horse coming through. I thought, >It couldn=t be
Willie could it?= and sure enough, it was.@ Pike added of
Elite Belle, "She doesn=t even travel. She does it from
off the bit and you have got to rely on her and trust
her that she=s got it. She catches you a little bit
unawares but when she lets down, it=s electric.@
Elite Belle has made all 23 of her starts in Western
Australia, and she kicked off 2014 in style with a
victory in the Listed La Trice Classic here Jan. 1. She
was not seen again until May 17, when she checked in
second in the G3 Roma Cup, and she returned two
weeks later to take the G3 Belmont Sprint over 1400
meters before adding the G3 Hyperion S. over a furlong
further June 14. The bay kept the streak alive with a
victory in the G3 Prince of Wales S. in her first outing
as a 6-year-old Oct. 25, and was fourth behind
yesterday=s G1 Winterbottom S. victress Magnifisio

Magnifisio survived an inquiry to become the first
Group 1 winner for her sire, Magnus (Aus) (Flying Spur
{Aus}). Magnifisio bested Watermans Bay by a head,
and the latter rival=s rider claimed Magnifisio had cost
him a winning chance with interference 100 meters into
the race. Stewards ultimately decided the interference
was insufficient to warrant changing the order of finish.
The remarkably consistent Manifisio has finished off
the board just twice in 12 outings over the past 12
months, and last December she kicked off a five-race
win streak that encompassed three listed races and
concluded with the G3 Roma Cup May 17, where she
had yesterday=s G1 Railway S. winner Elite Belle (Aus)
(Canny Lad {Aus}) back in second. Magnifisio could
manage only fourth in the Listed Beaufine S. July 12,

today at which he annexed the 2013 G1 Queen
Elizabeth II Cup and last year=s Hong Kong Gold Cup.
While Military Attack is drawn well in stall four, reigning
Horse of the Year Designs on Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}) has a wider alley in gate 10, but Joao
Moreira should be able to work out a trip for the comefrom-behinder. Winner of last year=s QE II Cup over this
course and distance, the 4-year-old subsequently
disappointed when tried over 2400 meters and went to
the shelf. He was expected to move forward off an
excellent third to Gold-Fun in the Celebration Cup H.
over seven furlongs Oct. 5, but could not rally off a
slow pace in the Sha Tin Trophy three weeks later and
was beaten just over three lengths into eighth. He
should be running late if the fractions are more genuine
this time around. Willie Cazals (Ire) (Aussie Rules) and
Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}) are using this as a prep
for the 2400-meter G1 Hong Kong Vase. The latter
upset that event in 2013, but has been in poor form in
two tries this term, while Willie Cazals just failed in the
Sa Sa Ladies= Day Purse H. Nov. 9.

Himself a two-time Horse of the Year in Hong Kong,
Ambitious Dragon (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) won the 2012
G1 Hong Kong Mile, and--remarkably--will look to get
back to that race in today=s G2 Jockey Club Mile. The
bay was sixth behind Military Attack in the 2013 QE II
Cup, but a tendon injury sent him to the sidelines and
put his career in serious jeopardy. But he was nursed
back to health by

and outran odds of
13-1 to get to within
3/4 of a length of

AHis barrier trial was good, I was very happy with that
warm-up trial, he=s sharpened up,@ added Millard. GoldFun (Ire) (Le Vie dei Colori {GB}), winner of half of his
16 local starts, was second to Glorious Days (Aus)
(Hussonet) in last year=s Hong Kong Mile and was
impressive in the Celebration Cup before just failing to
last in the Sha Tin Trophy. Able Friend (Aus)
(Shamardal) looked a champion miler in the making last
season, including a defeat of Designs on Rome in the
Hong Kong Classic Mile, but was defeated at odds-on
in the G1 Champions Mile to conclude his season. The
4-year-old was forced to carry top weight in his
seasonal return in the Premier Bowl H. Oct. 26 and
loomed a threat into the final 50 yards before flattening
out to finish fourth to Aerovelocity (NZ) (Pins {Aus}).
Hana=s Goal (Jpn) (Orewa Matteruze {Jpn}) raids from
Japan and rates an upset look. The chestnut upset the
G1 All Aged S. at Randwick Apr. 26, but has faced the
starter just once since for a 17th-place finish in the
G1 Sprinters= S. at Niigata Oct. 5.
Lucky Nine (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 2011 G1 Hong
Kong Sprint hero, makes his return to the races in
today=s G2 Jockey Club Sprint, a race he won back in
2012. Now seven, Lucky Nine defeated Charles the
Great (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the
Chairman=s Sprint Prize last February and was second
to that foe in the Sprint Cup in April before annexing
the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint for the second year
running May 18. Hong Kong=s Dubai-winning duo of Al
Quoz S. hero Amber Sky (Aus) (Exceed and Excel
{Aus}) and Sterling City (Aus) (Nadeem {Aus}) will also
look to punch their tickets to the International Races in
three weeks= time. Amber Sky is one of the world=s
best over a straight five furlongs, but today=s distance
and the fact he needs to negotiate a turn are obvious
question marks. However Mirco Demuro isn=t all that
concerned. ATo me, he doesn=t have a problem,@ said
the jockey. AHe=s just so quick that when he comes to
the turn he=s maybe hanging a little bit but not that
much. He=s getting older now so he knows what he has
to do. And for me, he can handle the 1200 meters,
that=s not a problem.@ He most recently trialled around
the bend and drifted a touch wide into the stretch
before finishing under a hold. Sterling City, the G1
Dubai Golden Shaheen victor, needs to improve off a
pair of lackluster efforts this season, including a wellbeaten 10th behind Aerovelocity (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) in
the Premier Bowl H. On the plus side, he retains the
services of Joao Moreira and it would be foolish to
think he=s without a chance here. Singapore=s Spalato
(NZ) (Elusive City) will try to follow in the hoofprints of
Rocket Man (Aus) (Viscount {Aus}), who won this
event when it was not graded in 2010. A perfect sixfor-six at home, including the Singapore Derby over
2000 meters, he most recently carried James
McDonald to a track record-setting victory at Kranji
Oct. 26. He wasn=t done any favors by drawing the
13 hole here, but he could prove quick enough to
overcome that this afternoon.

Mikki Isle (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) would be
perfect in 2014 but for an uncharacteristically poor
performance in the G1 Yasuda Kinen June 8, and the
sophomore has a shot for redemption in today=s G1
Mile Championship. The Noda Mizuki colorbearer, who
is one of six by his champion sire in the lineup, opened
his 3-year-old account with a pair of Group 3 victories
over this distance.
Connections opted to bypass
the Triple Crown series to stick
to these shorter distances, and
that decision paid dividends
when Mikki Isle collected the
G1 NHK Mile Cup May 11.

piece of trackwork solo 10 days ago, Mikki Isle appears
primed to add a second Group 1. Those looking to
deny him that title include defending winner Tosen Ra
(Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Like Mikki Isle, Tosen Ra
failed to handle the easy going in the Yasuda Kinen,
checking in 14th, and he returned with a third-place
finish in the G2 Kyoto Daishoten Oct. 14. World Ace
(Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) turned heads when breaking
the course record over this track and trip in the G2
Yomiuri Milers Cup Apr. 27, and he checked in a
respectable fifth in the Yasuda Kinen. World Ace was a
puzzling 13th in the G2 Mainichi Okan Oct. 12, but
having also been placed in the 2012 G1 Japanese
2000 Guineas and Derby he has back form to call on,
and wouldn=t be a shock winner. Second behind World
Ace in the Yomiuri was Fiero (Jpn) (Deep Impact
{Jpn}), who had previously won three straight at the
allowance level. Eighth in the Yasuda Kinen, the 5year-old was beaten just a half-length by Mikki Isle in
the Swan S. Yasuda Kinen 10th Clarente (Jpn) (Dance
in the Dark {Jpn}) comes into this off a pair of Group 3
victories over the distance Aug. 17 and Sept. 14.

JUDGE RULES IN FAVOR OF LEAGUES IN NJ
SPORTS BETTING CASE
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp ruled as
expected late Friday in favor of the four major sports
leagues and the NCAA, granting a permanent injunction
against legalized sports betting at New Jersey casinos
and racetracks through the passing of last month=s
S2460 bill. The temporary injunction issued by Shipp
last month was set to expire Friday evening at 11:59
p.m. Shipp ruled similarly in a case in 2013 on the
grounds that the state=s regulation over sports betting
violated the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection
Act. S2460 attempted to circumvent that issue by
allowing private regulation, but lawyers for the leagues
and the NCAA argued that the new law provided Ade
facto authorization@ of sports betting by the state. That
2013 case ultimately went to the Third Circuit Court of
Appeals, and the matter will once again be settled
there.
AObviously we=re disappointed, but not terribly
surprised,@ said Dennis Drazin, lawyer and advisor to
Darby Development LLC, operators of Monmouth Park.
AAfter analyzing the rationale expressed by the Court in
granting a temporary restraining order last month,

We will once again return to the Third Circuit Court
of Appeals and ask that they order strict adherence to
their 2013 decision, which established the roadmap for
New Jersey to begin offering sports wagering.@
Noting a change in the climate on the issue of sports
betting, and citing specifically NBA commissioner
Adam Silver=s recent New York Times op-ed in which
he came out in favor of it being legalized, Drazin
continued, AThe decision [Friday] is a delay, not an end
to Monmouth Park offering sports betting to our fans.
We remain steadfast in our fight to bring sports betting
to Monmouth Park and are confident that day is still on
the very near horizon.@
Monmouth, the only entity in New Jersey to make a
serious attempt to implement sports betting, planned
to begin taking bets on NFL games Oct. 26 before the
leagues were granted an injunction. During a hearing
Thursday, Ronald Riccio, representing the track, said
business at the track and the state=s Thoroughbred
industry in general could collapse if legalized sports
betting is permanently banned.
Monmouth announced after the decision that they
would postpone the building of a planned 7,500-seat
concert venue that was scheduled to open in mid2015.
AWithout additional revenue streams, it=s just not
feasible to continue with the concert arena at this
time,@ explained Drazin. AUnfortunately, and once
again, the biggest loser here is the people of New
Jersey. Not only are they being denied sports betting,
which they overwhelmingly voted for in 2011, but will
now miss out on a new concert venue next year that
would have provided jobs, tax revenues and of course
a world-class entertainment destination at the Jersey
Shore.@
Later Saturday, Monmouth Park issued another press
release saying it would look into offering fantasy sports
betting at its facility.
"The Court specifically said that it was not entering
an injunction against the New Jersey Thoroughbred
Horsemen's Association," noted Drazin. "We are
having our legal team evaluate yesterday's ruling to
determine the appropriate course of action consistent
with the Court's ruling and with what the leagues and
others are currently doing.
"On its face, the Court's ruling does not restrain
Monmouth Park from partaking in this type of activity.
Furthermore, we intend to continue our efforts to bring
sports betting to our facility."

IRISH JUMPS TRAINER BANNED THREE YEARS
Philip Fenton, an Irish National Hunt trainer found
guilty last month of possessing anabolic steroids and
other banned substances, has been banned from
holding a trainer=s license for three years by the Irish
Turf Club. Fenton=s ban will begin midnight Nov. 28,
and as of Mar. 1 next year he will be banned from any
horse racing environment.
A search of Fenton=s Co. Tipperary yard in January
2012 revealed a box containing 25 bottles and
containers of medications, including the anabolic steroid
Nitrotain and Ilium Stanabolic. Fenton was fined
i6,000 and ordered to pay another i4,200 in costs
following the case.

GOFFS NOVEMBER COMES TO A CLOSE

Six days of foal and mare trade at Goffs drew to a
close yesterday with the final breeding stock session,
which yielded another i1,092,100 and a top price of
i41,000. With the November Foal Sale aggregate
having shot up by 52% to i27,504,700, thanks in no
small part to the sale of two Frankel filly foals-including the record price in Ireland for a weanling of
i1.8 million--the two-day sale of mares was a quieter
affair, recording turnover of i7,777,400.
This was garnered for 270 of the mares offered--a
clearance rate of 70% compared to 84% in 2013--and
represented a 40% decline. The average dropped by
35% to i26,187 and the median by 7% to i13,500.
For the Goffs November Sale as a whole, turnover
was up by 13% to i35,270,100 (not including the
Paulyn Dispersal in the 2013 figures), while the average
rose to i33,979 (+11%) and median to i20,000
(+25%). The clearance rate slipped by just one point to
83%.

hoping for another strong renewal of our foal sale to
build on the year-on-year growth enjoyed over the last
five years followed by a steady trade for the breeding
stock catalogued over the last two days. No one could
have predicted the simply amazing scenes over the full
four days of foals, which led to record-breaking figures
with the highest turnover, average and median in our
history topped off by the sensational i1.8 million
record for the Frankel--Finsceal Beo filly.@
Beeby added, AOur two-day breeding stock sale was
always going to struggle to keep up with the foal trade
whilst, of course, it had to follow a truly historic sale in
2013 that included the
once-in-a-generation
Paulyn Dispersal
featuring the record
breaking i6 million
Chicquita, as well as the
Citadel Dispersal and a
number of other rare
lots. However, we have
returned a solid trade for
Record-breaking Frankel--Finsceal the catalogue presented
Beo filly
and it is worth pointing

has remained within a
bid of last year, which points to a steady middle

The leading light on the final day was the Aussie
Rules mare Ghedi (Ire) (lot 1283), sold with a
fashionable covering to Darley=s young stallion
Casamento (Ire), whose 36 first-crop foals sold earlier
in the week recorded an average of i38,000 and top
price of i210,000. The 4-year-old is a out of the G3
Rockfel S. winner Germane (GB) (Distant Relative) and
thus a half-sister to Italian listed winner Lucky Chappy
(Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who has also been placed in
the GI Hollywood Derby and GII Virginia Derby.
AShe=s a nice filly with an attractive cover and her
dam also has a yearling full-sister to Lucky Chappy still
to run for her,@ said Peter Kavanagh, who bought Gehdi
on behalf of a client.
Three- and 4-year-old fillies filled the next four slots
on the leaderboard, with lot 1371, the Aga Khan
Studs= Zaindera (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), a half-sister
to listed-placed Zabarajad (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}),
fetching i36,000 to a bid from Milltown House Stud.
Exceed And Excel (Aus) filly Sibaya (GB) (lot 1449),
out of a half-sister to GI EP Taylor S. winner Miss
Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), and seven-furlong winner
Danseur De Feu (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (lot 1342)
are on their way to Dorset-based Glanvilles Stud having
been bought for i36,000 and i30,000, respectively.
A daughter of G3 CL Weld Park S. victress Ugo Fire
(Ire) (Bluebird), Danseur De Feu was consigned by
Khalid Abdul Rahim=s Friarstown Stud, which also
offered 3-year-old Shadwell filly Taaluf (Ire). She was
another purchase by Peter Kavanagh at i26,000.
The 119 fillies and mares to change hands during the
final session sold for an average of i9,177 and median
of i7,500, with a clearance rate of 78%.
Henry Beeby concluded, AI want to place on record
how pleased we are to have again welcomed such an
international audience to Goffs, assisted in those
endeavors by the team at Irish Thoroughbred
Marketing. Irish bloodlines have never been as
cherished and we look forward to watching many
offspring of the Irish-bred/Goffs-sold mares winning at
the highest level around the globe.@
RESPECT FOR OWNERS
Recently, I brokered the purchase of a high-profile
horse in South America. Within minutes of closing the
deal, I saw press releases, tweets, messages on
Facebook and texts with many of those stating the
price of the horse and the name of the buyer. There
were a lot of different prices quoted and a few of
different buyers. All were wrong in what they sent out.
It was well known by these pundits that I was the
agent in this transaction but none contacted me for
details. As news started to spread, some of the major
industry publications contacted me asking for details
and I confirmed that the horse had been purchased but
did not give out any information on the buyer or the
sale price. That is the way that my client wanted it
handled and I was his representative in this transaction
and, therefore, I am obligated to respect his privacy.
While it is understandable that people in the industry
want to know details about the sale of an important
horse, I believe that we must always respect the
wishes of the owners who are the ones who, along
with the bettors, fund our sport. I find it reprehensible
when those who apparently want to show that they are
the first to know what is going on throw out names
and numbers based on speculation. Giving out
information, or not, on a purchase of any horse is the
decision of the person who is putting up the money.
We must give those owners the privilege of making the
announcement the way that they want to or to keep it
private if that is what they chose to do. To infringe on
the right of privacy of any owner in this business is a
total lack of respect for those who spend fortunes
while trying to come up with the next superstar.

responsible to the person who is paying for my
services and to no one else. I understand the
frustration of the people of the press when they can=t
get more detail immediately, but all of us who are
fortunate make our living in this game must always
respect the ones who fund it. Eventually everyone will
know who is the purchaser but that will happen at his
discretion and that is the way it should be.
The serious publications that contacted me have all
shown proper respect in publishing reports of the sale.
But, there are many who, in their desire to show that
they are privy to inside information, continue to send
out non-verified information that is a total lack of
respect to both buyer and seller. Private transactions
are just that: private.

joined forces in the sales arena to create the Baroda &
Colbinstown Studs
consignment, the two Irish
horsemen approach the
upcoming Tattersalls
December Mares Sale with
what Cox describes as their
Abest draft ever@ for the
breeding stock sale.

Newmarket next week.

Davids of the merits of
amalgamating their two sales operations, Cox will be
hoping they can continue their upward curve over the
next fortnight.
Cox owns the famous Baroda Stud on the outskirts
of Newbridge, Co Kildare, while Colbinstown Stud
belongs to the Myerscough family, but the relationship
between the pair predates the establishment of their
current business.
Baroda Stud was sold by the Myerscoughs to the
Cox family a number of years ago, and David Cox
joined his family's neighboring Rosetown Stud with
Baroda. In addition to sales consignments, Cox boards
mares and spells racehorses for clients from Ireland,
France, the UK and the U.S. independently from the
consigning business. Heavily involved in the National
Hunt sphere, the purchase of Baroda was the catalyst
for Cox=s expansion into breeding flat horses.
"I was mainly into National Hunt racing and then
when we bought Baroda I started dabbling in the flat a
bit because I had an extra 140 acres and I had an extra
25 boxes," he explained. "David [Myerscough] had
retired from training at the time and we met at the
sales. He was selling a draft, and I was selling a draft-we both had small drafts and we just said, >it makes
sense to join up,= and we did. We have built it up
slowly each year, increasing the numbers.@
Myerscough, the grandson of legendary trainer
Vincent O=Brien and son of former Tattersalls= director
Philip Myerscough, trained from Fox Covert Stables at
The Curragh for five years and has traveled the world
as a bloodstock agent.
Cox noted the partnership has made great strides in
2014.
AThis year we had 70 yearlings to sell, which was
great, and we had a good year and got plenty of
exposure for it,@ he said. AWe do a good job and we
have great staff. We get a lot of positive feedback,
which is great."
Cox=s father, Dermot, is a well-known businessman
and owner of leading National Hunt horses including,
G1 Punchestown Gold Cup winner Tranquil Sea (Ire)
(Sea Raven {Ire}) and Ninetieth Minute (Ire) (Old Vic
{GB}), while Cox=s wife,
Tamso Doyle Cox--who
runs the farm with him-is the former
communications
manager of Horse
Racing Ireland and owns
her own consultancy
firm.
Despite successfully
striking out into the flat
world, Cox remains
Baroda Stud
active in the National
barodastud.com
Hunt sphere and will
remain so. The work
and the horses are divided up between the pair with no
discrimination.
"The farms are roughly 500 acres between my two
farms and David's farm,@ Cox explained. AWe do all our
own foaling and we board mares for other people."

Of the various strands of the business they combine,
he added, "We split the yearlings between the two
farms as they are bought. We don't say, >I'm taking a
certain pedigree or a certain sale.= We divide them up
as we buy them--they are going home in twos or
threes and a box will come from Dave's farm and one
from mine and we will bring them home."
Baroda & Colbinstown=s draft at Tattersalls contains
a mixture of mares in foal to some of the best stallions
around and younger, impeccably bred fillies. One of
those is lot 1518, a 2-year-old Lope De Vega (Ire) halfsister to the G2 Rockfel S. winner Al Thakira (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}). Lope De Vega made a sizzling start to
his stud career this year, his progeny headed by
G1 Dewhurst S. winner Belardo (Ire). There was an
insatiable demand for his foals at Goffs last week and
Cox is hoping that, coupled with the exploits of his
filly=s year-older sibling, will have bidders reaching for
their check books at Newmarket.
Another well-related mare consigned by the
organization that could prove one of the highlights of
the sale is lot 1828. Maid To Master (Ire) (Danehill
Dancer {Ire}) is a 5-year-old full-sister to
Mastercraftsman (Ire), and if that wasn't enough to set
pulses racing, she is the only mare in the sale in foal to
War Front.
"[Mastercraftsman=s dam] Starlight Dreams (Black
Tie Affair {GB}) has gone to some of the best stallions
in the world, and this pedigree has become a very
important pedigree that will be in production for
generations to come," Cox said. "Mastercraftsman has
firmly planted his feet in Tipperary with two Classic
winners this year, and what more can I say? She is a
good-looking, attractive mare with a good walk and is
a winner, so she should tick a lot of boxes. The fact
that she is in foal to War Front should add to the
excitement."
The War Front connection continues with lot 1827,
Kimono (Bernardini), a mare who is carrying to the first
crop of the Claiborne sire=s sensational G2 Coventry S.
winner Declaration Of War, who stood his first season
at Coolmore in Co Tipperary this year and will relocate
to that operation=s Ashford Stud in Kentucky in 2015.
Cox pointed out a handful of other highlights of the
Baroda & Colbinstown mare draft.
"We have a highly rated Dubawi (Ire) mare [Split
Trois] in foal to More Than Ready, lot 1790. Split Trois
was a good racemare,@ Cox said.
He added, AShe will be joined by two of the only
mares in foal to Shamardal in the entire sale. The first
of those is lot 1791, Truth Beauty (Ire) (Dubai
Destination), who is out of a half-sister to Street Cry
(Ire). We also have a beautifully bred daughter of
Shirocco (Ger) [Alazya] carrying her first foal, lot 1826.
Alazeya is from an Aga Khan family, out of a Group 1placed mare by Barathea (Ire). Her half-sister Alanza
(Ire) (Dubai Destination) is a Group 3 winner and her
2-year-old Raven's Pass sister, Alonsoa (Ire), has
already won a listed race."
Building the quality of the stock that they offer is the
key next step in the evolution of Baroda & Colbinstown
Studs as a consignor.
"This year we were one of the top consignors in
Tattersalls [October] Book Two, and if we could get
into the top five or six in the [Goffs] Orby that would
be another goal," he admitted. "I'd like to be in the top
10 consignors at every sale and maybe even top
consignor at some of the sales. I would like to fill
Tattersalls Book One up a bit more. We had five in that
sale this year but if we could get that up to 10 or 15,
try and increase the quality for there and the Goffs'
Orby sale as well, we would like to go that way."
Purchasers have regularly been forced to exchange
six-figure sums for horses consigned by Cox and
Myerscough, such is the quality they already trade in.
With a high-class draft for Tattersalls next week, that
trend is likely to continue.

On the New York road to the Kentucky Derby (G1), in his first start on dirt,
I Want Revenge rose to the top of the three-year-old class in the
Gotham Stakes (G3), drawing off by 8 1/2 widening lengths setting
a new Stakes Record. He defeated the likes of Grade 1 Winners
and Millionaires Haynesfield, Giant Ryan, and Russell Road.
The impressive effort earned him a 113 Beyer Speed Figure,
which was the third-highest three-year-old Beyer of the year
and one of the highest pre-Derby Beyer Figures ever.
I Want Revenge followed up his Gotham win with a spectacular victory
in the Wood Memorial (G1), following in the footsteps of successful sires
Tapit, Empire Maker, Unbridled’s Song, Broad Brush, Pleasant Colony,
and Seattle Slew. After being completely left at the gate,
spotting the field several lengths, and getting pinched in the stretch
several times, I Want Revenge stamped his ticket to Louisville
in one of the year’s most memorable performances.
After devastating back-to-back wins in the Grade 1 Wood and
Grade 3 Gotham Stakes, I Want Revenge was installed as the
morning-line favorite for the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
On the morning of the race, he was scratched like his Grandsire
A.P. Indy, who was also the morning-line favorite.
