Merry Christmas to all! Peace on earth
and good will toward men.
Thank you again for your cards, prayers,
and warm wishes. Special thanks to all
who participated in our Christmas
Liturgies. We thank, in particular, Fr. Bill
Schuessler, who was asked to dive into
the middle of our frantic Advent
schedule and minister to our Spanish speaking faithful. He
has done so with great grace. Finally, thank you, who with all
of the challenges and changes you have faced, have
welcomed Fr. Bill Schuessler with open arms and hearts.
We move quickly to the celebration of the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and pray for all families. God
established the family to be a foundation for the Church and
for society. We are reminded this week how beautiful that
can be. We are also aware that much work needs to be done
and we have witnessed the fruit of neglect in regard to
marriage and family. Let us persevere in hope as Jesus, Mary,
and Joseph accompany us. We need God’s grace to be
patient and forgiving so that healing can take place and
families strengthened.

Mass Intentions in the
name of a deceased
loved one, for the
intentions of someone in need, or in
thanksgiving for a blessing received from the
Lord. In accordance with Church law, only one
intention per mass will be accepted for a
stipend of $10.00. Mass Intentions are
available for 2015 with new scheduling
guidelines. For more information, call the

We recognize also that the Cross and the Crib go hand in
hand. The healing from lost trust and separation involves
suffering, but thanks to Jesus that suffering is made fruitful.
We see right away Jesus fleeing with Mary and Joseph into
Egypt from the envy of Herod and we remember the Holy
Innocents and St. Stephen in the days following the
celebration of Christ’s birth. It is a reminder that for us
Christians, filled with joyful anticipation for the completion of
God’s plan, there is a mix of joy and sorrow.
May this holy season be mostly one of joy for you and yours.

“Are we moved by the suffering of those without
shelter? Do we seek to alleviate the fear, confusion and
panic that women facing unexpected pregnancies may
be experiencing? Do our hearts ache for elderly patients
in nursing homes who feel abandoned and unwanted,
having no one to visit them?
Vocations Corner: Find the Center
Growing up I used to like to shoot pool with my friends
from time to time. All of us were O.K. at it; we weren’t
great but we weren’t horrible either. One day one of them
said that he decided to buy a new cue ball just for fun. I
was excited because he asked me if I wanted to be the
first one to use it! I set it down on the table, aimed right at
the center of the 15 balls that were racked together on the
other end, pulled my cue back, launched it forward into the
cue ball... and it awkwardly staggered across the table in a
loop-de-loop fashion. It was a trick ball that was weighted
off center so as to throw off its centripetal motion! We got
a good laugh out of it that day.
Sometimes I feel like my life works just like that trick ball. I
want for it to go towards God, but I spiral off course. Why
does this happen? Because I want to go towards God, but
He often isn’t at the center of everything that I do. I don’t
always give Him the weight of my heart or my plans. If I
put God (the most important thing) on the fringe, and allow
pointless things to become the center of my attention,
then I’m going to awkwardly stagger through life! What we
need to do to ensure that we are playing the game right is
to ask Him to help us to properly center our lives around
Him, so that we will have direction and purpose as we go
about our days.
Our mission is to show each person the love of Christ.
As uniquely created individuals, we each have unique
gifts which we are called to use to share Christ’s love.”

The Three Kings
Hope you had a blessed and Merry Christmas and
here’s wishing you a happy and prosperous New
Year! I’d like to share a public domain poem written by Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow. I encourage you to read this with family as we
bring in the new calendar year and approach the Feast of the Epiphany.
Three Kings came riding from far away, Melchior and Gaspar and
Baltasar; Three Wise Men out of the East were they, and they travelled
by night and they slept by day, for their guide was a beautiful, wonderful
star.
The star was so beautiful, large and clear, that all the other stars of the
sky became a white mist in the atmosphere, and by this they knew that
the coming was near of the Prince foretold in the prophecy.
Three caskets they bore on their saddle-bows, three caskets of gold with
golden keys; their robes were of crimson silk with rows of bells and
pomegranates and furbelows, their turbans like blossoming almondtrees.
And so the Three Kings rode into the West, through the dusk of the night,
over hill and dell, and sometimes they nodded with beard on breast, and
sometimes talked, as they paused to rest, with the people they met at
some wayside well.
“Of the child that is born,” said Baltasar, “Good people, I pray you, tell us
the news; for we in the East have seen his star, and have ridden fast,
and have ridden far, to find and worship the King of the Jews.”
And the people answered, “You ask in vain; we know of no King but
Herod the Great!” They thought the Wise Men were men insane, as they
spurred their horses across the plain, like riders in haste, who cannot
wait.
And when they came to Jerusalem, Herod the Great, who had heard this
thing, sent for the Wise Men and questioned them; and said, “Go down
unto Bethlehem, and bring me tidings of this new king.”
So they rode away; and the star stood still, the only one in the grey of
morn; yes, it stopped – it stood still of its own free will, right over
Bethlehem on the hill, the city of David, where Christ was born.
And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guard, through the
silent street, till their horses turned and neighed as they entered the great
inn-yard; but the windows were closed, and the doors were barred, and
only a light in the stable burned.
And cradled there in the scented hay, in the air made sweet by the breath
of kine, the little child in the manger lay, the child, that would be king one
day of a kingdom not human, but divine. His mother Mary of Nazareth sat
watching beside his place of rest, watching the even flow of his breath,
for the joy of life and the terror of death were mingled together in her
breast.
They laid their offerings at his feet: the gold was their tribute to a King,
the frankincense, with its odor sweet, was for the Priest, the Paraclete,
the myrrh for the body’s burying.

And the mother wondered and bowed her head, and sat as still as a
statue of stone. Her heart was troubled yet comforted, remembering
what the Angel had said of an endless reign and of David’s throne.
Then the Kings rode out of the city gate, with a clatter of hoofs in proud
array; but they went not back to Herod the Great, for they knew his
malice and feared his hate, and returned to their homes by another way.

ST. ANTHONY THE HERMIT
He was born about 468 in the ancient Roman
province of Valeria (now the Balkans.) When he
was eight years old, his father died and he was
entrusted to the care of St. Severinus. Upon the
death of Severinus in 482, he was sent to
Germany and put in the care of his uncle,
Constantius, an early bishop of Lorsch. While
there, he became a monk. In 488, at about the
age of twenty, he moved to Italy and joined the
cleric Marius and his companions as a hermit at
Lake Como. However, he gained so many
disciples seeking to emulate his holiness that he
chose to seek greater solitude. He lived in various
solitary places until he became a monk at the
Abbey of Lerins in Gaul, two years before his death
in 520. He became well-known for the holiness of
his life and the miracles he had performed. St.
Anthanasius, who knew Anthony and wrote his
biography, said “Anthony was not known for his
writings nor for his worldly wisdom, nor for any art,
but simply for his reverence toward God.”
