Our Values
Our Cause
To put the needs of others above myself.
Proverbs 3:3-8 & 1 John 4:9-11
The YMCA of Greater Whittier is an association of all
people united in a common effort to put Judeo-Christian
principles into daily practice and to enrich the quality
of spiritual, mental, physical, and social life of their
families, their community and themselves.
At the Y, strengthening the foundations of community
is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with
our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless
of age, income or background, has the opportunity to
learn, grow and thrive.
Our Pledge
At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away. We
provide income-based membership and program fees
that provide assistance for individuals and families in
financial need within available resources.
The four core values of the Young Men’s Christian
Association are the essential principles that guide
our behavior, interactions with each other and our
decision making.
CARING
HONESTY
To have integrity by being truthful and trustworthy in
every part of life.
Ezekiel 18:21 & 1 Corinthians 4:2
RESPECT
To value others, treating them, as I want to be treated.
Proverbs 29:22-23 & 1 Peter 2:17
RESPONSIBILITY
To be accountable for my attitudes and actions.
Ezekiel 18:30 & Galatians 6:4-5
Our Areas of Focus
The YMCA is a cause-driven organization that is for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility.
That’s because a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. YMCA
of Greater Whittier has been serving the communities of Whittier, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, La Mirada and
La Habra Heights since 1915.
* Youth Development – Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.
* Healthy Living – Improving our community’s health and well-being.
* Social Responsibility – Giving back and providing support to our neighbors.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
AQUATICS – Swim Instruction
The YMCA is proud to be the nation’s leader in teaching youths how to swim safely. We have designed a structured
program that consists of seven different levels, and children will be placed according to their current level of
experience. Our patient, committed, certified lifeguards and instructors have earned the trust of students and
parents alike and are truly dedicated to promoting physical well-being, self-confidence, and security. They will train
children to overcome their fear of water, to discover the joy and challenge of moving through a totally different
medium. Although swimming can seem intimidating at first, anyone can learn! It’s all about practice, learning the
proper techniques, and believing in your own abilities—no matter what your age or skill level. We look forward to
seeing you soon!
Water Babies (6 months - 3 years)
Guppy (5 - 14 years)
The primary objective of the parent/child class is to
get both the parent and the child comfortable in the
water. The child will become aware of the difference of
moving through water and dry land, while the parent
will learn how to teach his/her child to be safer in and
around water. The child will be exposed to games that
use basic movement in the water, such as kicking, arm
strokes, and breath control. Activities are based on the
developmental abilities of the child.
Children in this level will improve endurance, begin to
refine the front and back crawl and are introduced
to secondary strokes. This class will introduce rotary
breathing, treading water, and diving.
Pikes (3 - 5 years)
This level is for pre-school aged children and is designed
to be their first experience in the pool without parental
assistance. The child is taught the basic skills that
are the building blocks of swimming. This class offers
a gradual, general water orientation utilizing creative
water play, floating, basic arm skills, blowing bubbles,
and kicking skills.
Eels (3 - 5 years)
This level is for the advanced younger child who has mastered
basic front crawl and has no fear of the water. Emphasis will
be placed on building endurance to better learn the stroke
movements. Introduction to the front crawl, elementary
backstroke, back crawl and treading water.
Polliwog (5 - 14 years)
Beginning level for school age children, taught in the
shallow end with periodic trips to the deep. No prior
swimming experience necessary. This class is a gradual
water orientation, emphasizing basic swimming skills,
survival float, and confidence building. Introduction to
the front crawl.
6
Minnow (5 - 14 years)
This level introduces endurance swimming. Swimmers in
this level should be able to swim on their own and will
master the front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke.
An introduction to dolphin kick, elementary backstroke,
and sidestroke.
Fish (5 - 14 years)
Swimmers in this level will learn to perfect the four
Olympic strokes. They will also refine their elementary
backstroke and sidestroke. Introduction to flip turns
and racing starts.
Adult Beginner (14 years and up)
Classes are designed for adults with little or no water
experience or fear of water. Participants will learn
swimming basics.

YMCA Baby Sharks Pre-Swim Team
Ages 4 – 8 years
The Baby Sharks swim team is for unique younger
children who have quickly advanced to an almost
acceptable swim team level. The purpose of the preteam is to get these younger swimmers ready to join the
older swim team faster than our swim lesson program
will allow. It will focus only on the four competitive
strokes, endurance, and diving. Swim meet competitions
are available. Tryout includes one lap of freestyle with
rhythmic side breathing and one lap of backstroke. To
schedule a try-out, or for more information, please call
the Aquatics Dept.
YMCA Sharks Swim Team Ages 6 & older
The Sharks swim team is for children who have either
completed the YMCA swim lesson program or have
appropriate skills to pass the team tryout. The tryout
includes two laps of freestyle, 2 laps of backstroke,
and a general understanding of breaststroke kick and
rhythm. The purpose of the team is to introduce children
to competitive swimming in a friendly environment.
Swimmers work on building endurance and perfecting
stroke technique and are encouraged to come to
practice every day if they are available. Swim meet
competitions are available. To schedule a try-out, or for
more information, please call the Aquatics Dept.
Recreation Swim
Enjoy fun and freedom in open recreational swim.
Come and enjoy yourself or bring the family. Included

recreation swim times or pick up a pool schedule at
the front desk.
Private Swim Instruction for
Individuals and Individuals with
Special Needs, All Ages
Private lessons are a one-to-one swim lesson which
is scheduled by the Aquatics Director. Private swim
lessons allow the instructor to focus solely on the
needs of their student. Our instructors will work with
the student and parents to create a swim lesson that
is both fun and instructional. The Whittier YMCA
has been instructing children and adults with special
needs for over 15 years. All children and adults, no
matter the disability are welcome in our program.
During certain times of the year we have a waitlist for
private instruction. To add your name to the waitlist
please fill out a request form at the YMCA courtesy
counter. After you have been called and scheduled
with an instructor, payment is due before the first
lesson begins. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length.

to prepare your child for YMCA swim lessons at
the YMCA of Greater Whittier. Look for sign-ups in
February. If you would like to volunteer or learn to
swim, please contact the Aquatics Dept.
The YMCA is America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.
In Y classes not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but also learn about yourself,
about safety and rescue skills, and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

More than childcare, the YMCA before and after school
program nurtures the potential of each child. At the Y,
kids are cultivating the values, skills and relationships
that lead to positive behavior, better health and
educational achievement. With health in mind we have
implemented two new programs into our curriculum, The
CATCH program, (Coordinated Approach to Child Health),
is an evidence based health program designed to promote
physical activity, healthy food choices and the prevention
of tobacco use in children.
Food & Fun, developed in collaboration with the Harvard
School of Public Health, is one of our tools for creating
healthy environments and supporting the well-being of kids
at the Y and at home. Food & Fun is designed to incorporate
lessons and activities about healthy eating and physical
activity into regular after school program schedules.

Welcome to the East Whittier YMCA Impact Martial
Arts program. Our state of the art approach to training
provides the perfect solutions for developing the skills
needed to succeed in life, as well as the martial arts
sport. Impact Martial Arts & Fitness is staffed by
professional and experienced instructors who have
dedicated their lives to sharing the power of martial arts
with the community. All of our instructors are certified

experience. We offer fun, life changing and convenient
classes to accommodate your busy schedule. Regardless
of your age or level of experience, we have a program
that is tailored just for you. At the YMCA, we not only
teach championship winning techniques, but we also
build razor sharp character through the inner success
philosophy: courage in the face of fear, developing your
"success vision", self respect first, and many other traits
of a warrior's disciplined lifestyle. Included, the spiritual
side of martial arts development is an important aspect
of each student's personal development as well.

arts, which not only improves the mind's focus, but

and respect others. Biddy Martial Arts is designed

Retired and Senior Volunteer
Program
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
matches individuals age 55 and older with service
opportunities at a variety of locations in the greater
Whittier and surrounding areas. RSVP “work stations”
include senior centers, nutrition programs, police,
sheriff and fire stations, assisted living facilities and

Y-HERITAGE CLUB
The YMCA of Greater Whittier has an Endowment
Fund, to provide support to our association in years to
come, and a Y-Heritage Club, honoring those who have
made a commitment to provide for the future of our
YMCA. Y-Heritage Club members, by their current or
planned gift ensure that the values of caring, honesty,
respect, and responsibility endure and that Y programs
will positively impact our community for generations to
come. For more information about the benefits of joining
our Y-Heritage Club please contact Rebecca Obst at
(562) 907-2727 ext. 6004 or email at
[email protected]
Claudia has been a Stride student for 18 years. She
enjoys working on her reading and math skills at Stride,
but says that her favorite Stride activity is going to
Camp Arbolado in September with Senior Camp.
“I also like playing basketball in the YMCA gym
at lunch and taking low-impact aerobics on Monday
mornings,” said Claudia. “I have a lot of fun at Stride
and I learn a lot too!”

Growing Stronger Together
Exciting news about our East Whittier YMCA!
The East Whittier Y opened in 1970 when Whittier
was a very different place. The Y has faithfully served
our community with this facility for over 40 years. To
ensure this long legacy of service will continue, we are
once again responding to our changing community and
expanding the Y by creating modern and flexible spaces
to impact people of all ages and backgrounds. The plan
includes a new shallow-water pool, enlarging program
space for dance, gymnastics and sports and renovating
our Healthy Lifestyle Center and locker rooms to enhance,
enlarge and modernize. This is an
exciting time for the Y, our members
and for our community. Come join us!
The Y will remain open during
construction.

BUILDING A HEALTHY ACTIVE
WHITTIER
In 2008, the City of Whittier and the YMCA of Greater
Whittier, concerned with the childhood obesity rate in
Whittier – one of the highest in Los Angeles County – came
together to maximize resources to address this alarming
health trend. PIH Health and the Los Angeles County
Department of Public Health. were invited to collaborate
and “Activate Whittier” was born. To date, Activate
Whittier has been awarded $700,000 in grant funding and
has the support of many community residents and partner
organizations. Together, we are working in partnership to
achieve our vision of building a healthy, active Whittier.
Activate Whittier is working with residents to create
momentum for Small Changes that Make a Big
Difference such as:
• Providing healthy eating and physical activity resources
to schools to encourage children to move more and eat
better.
• Enhancing access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables
by partnering with local corner stores to promote healthier
food choices.
Join Us for a meeting and learn how you can further
the work of Activate Whittier. Activate Whittier meets
monthly at the Uptown Whittier YMCA. Contact Penny

WE’RE MORE THAN A GYM
WE’RE A CAUSE
THe Y. so much more.
Every year we conduct our YMCA Annual Support Campaign, asking all of our members and others
in our community to make charitable contributions to our cause. These contributions supplement
membership and program fees, which makes being part of the Y more affordable. In addition, the
Campaign enables us to underwrite fees based on family income, enabling everyone who wishes to
join our Y family to do so. No one is turned away. Our 2015 Annul Support Campaign will allow us
to continue keeping this promise, and more.
