GOSPEL CONNECTION: The Holy Family
Lessons from my daughter
In his new book Cathedral: An Illness and a
Healing, Bill Henderson writes about an unexpected rolereversal in his family:
“While Holly [my young daughter] learned about
words like ‘Jesus’ and ‘Christmas’ from me, I relearned
words like ‘wonder’ and ‘love’ from her. And, more
important, I learned how not to be embarrassed by simple
sentiments.
“Wonder: One morning, Holly woke me quite
early, ‘Daddy, come quick! It’s ‘mazing!’ She led her
grumpy dad to her bedroom. ‘See!’ She pointed. A huge
moon was setting in the west and through another
window the sun, even larger, was rising from the east at
the same moment. I sat with her on her bed and shared
her awe . . .
“Love:
With Holly no love was ever
undemonstrated. Her good-night I love you, Mommy, I
love you, Daddy, was followed with hugs and kisses for all,
especially the dog. To Holly, love was as real as a rock. For
Holly and her friends, affection was never muted. They
didn’t need a boozy cocktail party or a church moment of
‘peace’ to inspire a kiss. Love was not just a word trotted
out in a Sunday sermon and forgotten before the offering
was taken. Their love for each other was a matter of every
moment. To walk down the street holding hands or with
their arms around each other wasn’t a bit remarkable to
them. Love was just the way it was.
“Because of Holly . . . I believe that the reason of
life is for each of us simply to grow in love.”
As the Child of Mary and Joseph will teach us in
his Gospel, our own children teach us about love and
wonder. They reveal to us the wonder of creation and
move us to gratitude for everyone and everything God has
made; children also help us realize our own capacity to
love and our ability to be the means of God’s compassion
and forgiveness for others to an extent we may not be
aware of. May we learn the lessons of wonder and love
from our children this Christmas, and so bring the light of
Christmas into our homes and hearts in every season of
the New Year.
