Dear parishioners,
[This message is being written on Wednesday, December 17, which is the date it is due to the bulletin vendor
(because it will be closed at Christmas).]
Our parish’s fifth annual Christmas Carol Festival will be today, Sunday, December 28, at 6:30 (till 8:00), in the
parish center. Please join your fellow parishioners and other attendees as we continue the celebration of the season of Christmas, which continues through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (this year: Sunday, January 11). (The following day is the
first day of Ordinary Time.)
The second of our parish’s two, annual, wall calendars arrived on Thursday, December 11, and therefore we were
able to make the two calendars available on Dec. 13-14 (not on Dec. 20-21, as was stated in my pastor’s message of Dec. 21).
Unfortunately, due to a miscommunication, the calendars were not available at the Saturday 5:00 and Sunday 7:30 Masses until Dec. 20-21. I apologize to the parishioners who usually attend those two Masses.
If you are traveling during the season of Christmas, you can locate a Catholic church by going to MassTimes.org or
TheCatholicDirectory.com. When you enter a ZIP code or city, you will be given a list of several churches within a certain
radius, along with each church’s Mass schedule, location, etc. (You will need to wait several seconds, while the website search
is being completed.) This is also a good planning tool for when you are preparing for a vacation or business trip or need to
find a Mass at a different time, in a neighboring parish. MassTimes.org has an iPhone app: Mass Times for Travel.
This Thursday – the final day of the Octave of Christmas -- we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother
of God – in honor of the maternity (motherhood) of Mary, who said “yes” to being the mother of God (Mater Dei) when she
gave God her fiat (“let it be done”) at the Annunciation. The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, is one of the six
holy days of obligation that we celebrate in the United States. (The others are the Ascension, the Assumption, All Saints, the
Immaculate Conception, and the Nativity of the Lord.) Our parish will have a vigil Mass on Wednesday, December 31, at 5:00
(in St. Raphael Church). There will be three Masses on the holy day: at 9:00 (in St. Raphael Church; at the same time as on
other days that are major civil holidays, i.e., Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving), at 10:30 (in
Holy Angels Church), and at 12:30 (in St. Raphael Church).
Today is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This year, it falls between the recent III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 5-19, 2014) and next year’s XIV Ordinary General Assembly
of the Synod of Bishops (October 4-25, 2015). The theme established by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for the III Extraordinary General Assembly was: “The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization.” The theme of the XIV
Ordinary General Assembly will be: “The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world.”
According to the Instrumentum Laboris (working document) -- issued on June 24, 2014, by the general secretary of the Synod
of Bishops – the ordinary general assembly in October 2015 will continue the work of the 2014 extraordinary general assembly
by “reflect[ing] further on the points discussed so as to formulate appropriate pastoral guidelines” for the pastoral care of the
person and the family.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and patron of fathers, pray for us.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
God bless you.

On Wednesday, December 31, New Year’s Eve the office will close at
5:00 pm. On Thursday, January 1, New Year’s day, the office is closed.
The office will re-open on Friday, January 2.
From Monday, December 1, through Sunday, April 5— Holy
Communion is being distributed under only one species
(the Sacred Host) instead of both species (the Sacred Host
and the Precious Blood), because of the flu season. Under
the principle of concomitance, we receive all of Jesus—
Body, Blood, soul, and divinity, whole and entire—under
either species. Thus, we do not have to receive both species at Communion.

PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL
Our parish is blessed to have a perpetual adoration chapel,
which was founded on November 1, 2010, by our founding pastor, the Reverend Jeffrey J. Kegley. The chapel is in the Saint
John Paul II Spiritual Center (former convent), which is located
on the driveway that leads from South Broad Street to St. Raphael Church. Adorers come from our parish and our sister parishes — twenty-four hours a day -- to adore and spend time with
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Blessed Sacrament in
the monstrance on the altar. Because the scheduled adorers
(who commit to one of the 168 hours each week) sometimes
move, get sick, or go away on vacation or to weddings, etc., we
always need more adorers (for a particular hour each week
or as a substitute). If you are able to make a weekly commitment or be a substitute, please see the sign-up form (and the
notice below it) on Page 10.
PRAYER to the HOLY FAMILY
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
in you we contemplate
the splendour of true love,
to you we turn with trust.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
grant that our families too
may be places of communion and prayer,
authentic schools of the Gospel
and small domestic Churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may families never again
experience violence, rejection and division:
may all who have been hurt or scandalized
find ready comfort and healing.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may the approaching Synod of Bishops
make us once more mindful
of the sacredness and inviolability of the family,
and its beauty in God’s plan.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
graciously hear our prayer!
Amen.

Retrouvaille is not just a social gathering or series of seminars, but rather a way to rediscover and rekindle the loving relationship in your marriage. The next program begins on the weekend of Friday, February 13-15, at the
Family Life Center in Malvern, Pa. For more information,
or to register for our upcoming weekend, visit our website

BOX TOPS, LABELS, CAPS
The Saint Raphael School PTA has boxes in each church narthex and in the school hallway, for Box Tops for Education,
Campbell soup labels, and Coca Cola bottle caps. We earn
money for box tops, and points for the labels and caps. This
enriches the students’ education. THANK YOU FOR YOUR

OPTIONS OTHER THAN ANNOUNCED MASSES
In addition to Mass Intentions at an announced Mass, enrollment in the Purgatorial Society, sanctuary candles, and
sanctuary flowers, the parish also offers cards for donations
“in honor of” or “in memory of” a loved one (for birthdays,
anniversaries, etc.) for the parish food pantry and the St.
Vincent de Paul Society. The amount of the donation is by
the choice of the donor. There is no set fee. Cards are
available in the parish office during regular business hours.
The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a
Christocentric prayer. In the sobriety of its elements, it has all the
depth of the Gospel message in its entirety, of which it can be
said to be a compendium. It is an echo of the prayer of Mary, her
perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation
which began in her virginal womb. With the Rosary, the Christian
people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the
beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his
love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as
though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.

MARRIAGE: LOVE and LIFE in the DIVINE PLAN:
Faith, Hope and Love
“As the Church is a community of faith, hope, and love, so the
Christian family, as the domestic church, is called to be a community of faith, hope, and love. Through this faith, hope, and love,
Jesus, by the power of his Holy Spirit, abides within each Christian family, as he does within the whole Church, and pours out
the love of his Father within it.”

"Saintly Stories"
(The Good News from Saint Raphael School)
Pictured is Miss Wolff’s
third-grade Religion class students learning several
“Parable Skits”
Mrs. Wolff's third-grade students learned about several parables in Religion class. A parable is a
story from God about ordinary people which teaches about the Kingdom of God.
After learning about and reading the parables, students were put into small groups and given a parable to read and discuss. The parables used were The Lost Coin, The Unmerciful Servant, The Lost
Sheep, The Prodigal Daughter (was changed from prodigal son), and The Good Samaritan. Then,
they were required to write their own scripts, which they would perform. After much practice, it was
time to perform the “Parable Skits” for their families. They truly embodied the characters in their parables and everyone learned important lessons from them. They did a wonderful job, in understanding, writing, and performing! Great job, everyone!!!

We are in DIRE NEED of food
Food Pantry NEEDS FOOD
Christmas is over, but the need for food is definitely not.
We want to thank our generous parishioners who donated food to help
stock our shelves. Thank you to those who also donated monetary contributions. Your monetary donations helped to purchase the food that
was in short supply.
Now that the holidays are over, it does not mean that our clients can
stop being concerned as to where they will procure food for their next
meal, especially if they have children to feed. Many parents look to the
food pantries for everyday food, so we must be here to supply the food
for them.
You can always drop off food in the narthex (in church) when coming to
Mass.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES. Newcomers and students are
always welcome. (Remember, volunteering once does not commit you to volunteer on every occasion.)
NURSING HOME
Tuesday, January 13, 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Also, for more than 25 years, our parish has volunteered on the second Tuesday of every month to sponsor Bingo
parties for the nursing home residents, first at the Mercer County Geriatric Center (MCGC), and then at MCGC’s successor Hamilton Grove Healthcare. We
usually have a themed party and provide refreshments and special prizes/gifts,
in addition to our help with Bingo. The volunteers’ smiles and helping hands are
truly appreciated by the residents. In January we will have a Keep Warm Bingo
with afghans, hats, scarves and gloves as our special prizes. Hope you will
consider joining us.
Thank you to the 22 volunteers (including 2 students and 1 first-timer) who
helped make our Christmas Bingo at Hamilton Grove a happy and special evening. The residents loved the calendars, cards and Christmas related gifts donated by St. Raphael-Holy Angels parishioners. Special thanks go to June Reinhardt for providing snack bags for all. Please call Kathy Wooley at 585-4307, if
you would like further information about any Social Concerns projects or if you
have a suggestion for a new project.
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Wednesday, December 31 10:00 am - 1:15 pm. Our parish has volunteered
for more than 25 years to serve at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen whenever
there is a fifth-Wednesday in the month. Our next serving commitment falls on
New Year’s Eve. What better way to end the year 2014 than by helping others?
Meet in the St. Raphael parking lot no later than 10:00 am for carpooling to
TASK.
FAMILY ROSARY NIGHT
The St. Raphael School PTA Spirituality Committee would like to invite you to join us for the Family Rosary on Friday, February 6. This is an
ongoing ministry that meets on the first Friday of
each month during the school year (except for
the months of January and April), at 7:30 pm, in

SOCIETY of SAINT VINCENT de PAUL
Today, is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph. We hear the words: “The child
grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the
favor of God was upon him.” As we remember the poor during
this New Year, may we grow in wisdom and have the favor of
God upon us.
Please remember to support the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul in the coming year so that together we can continue to
bring comfort and peace to our brothers and sisters who are
suffering.
For more information about the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul and the programs that reach out to those in need, please

YR 10,WK 19, The Holy Family
Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
Cradle, Cross and Crown!
The Holy Scriptures are filled with familial references because we are all one big family. We are
all sons and daughters of Our Father Who Art In Heaven. This Sunday’s feast day is particularly
referencing the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and is doing so for a very specific reason. Many years ago I was given an opportunity to give a teaching in Communist Poland. The
original title of the talk was supposed to be on the dangers of communism. By the time I arrived
the Communists were ‘overthrown’ and Lech Walesa and ‘his’ party, ‘Solidarnosc’, had begun to
lead Poland into a new era. Having travelled through what was a fairly ravaged, but beautiful
country by car, I was surprised to see one of the first new icons of the new Poland being erected
in Warsaw—the golden arches of McDonald’s were already serving Big Macs. I immediately
changed my talk to the dangers of materialism. “What has this got to do with today's feast day”? I
hear you ask! The model I used as an example to follow in order to overcome the difficulties of
both communism and materialism, is the model that is set forth by the little trinity on earth, the
holy family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This is the perfect family model for all peoples, all communities, all families to look to. This Sunday’s readings give us an opportunity to take stock of
our roles in the various families we belong to. Whether they are direct and immediate bloodlines,
or parish families or local communities, we all have roles to play. The roles of Mary and Joseph

REFLECTION
Dear Parishioners,
Please plan on joining us next Sunday, January 4, 2015, for our
annual Christmas Concert presented by the parish music ministry, at 7:00 pm in Saint Raphael Church. This joyous celebration
will include Heaven’s Echo, the Adult Choir, Bell Choir and the
Contemporary Ensemble. This hour-long program will conclude
with refreshments in the church narthex.
On behalf of the music ministry, I would like to wish everyone a
most blessed Christmas season. During this season, the choirs
of angels, all of creation, and every voice in concert, rings out a
song of the wonders of Christ’s love which brings “joy to the
World!” It is in this joy that we receive Him, with hope we share
Him, and with love we celebrate Him. May the gift of Jesus bless
your life throughout the upcoming year.
God bless you,
Lori Hoos

SAINTS OF THE WEEK
Monday, December 29 - Thomas Beckert, Bishop and martyr. “If we
who are called Bishops desire to understand the meaning of our calling
and to worthy of it, we must strive to keep our eyes on him who God
appointed high priest forever, and to follow in his footsteps.”
Friday, January 2 - Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops and Doctors. - Our single object and ambition was virtue, and a
life of hope in the blessings that are to come; we wanted to withdraw
from this world before we departed from it. With this end in view, we
ordered our lives and all our actions. We followed the guidance of God’s
law and spurred each other on the virtue.”
