Thank you for your support to our parish.. ST. FRANCIS DE SALES PARISH BAPTISM OF THE LORD Sunday, January 11, 2015 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DOYLE Dear Parishioners: In second grade I learned from the Baltimore Catechism that baptism is “an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.” In the gospel today, the Church reminds us that Jesus himself was baptized. It is natural to ask the question, “Why? Was this a real baptism? He didn’t have original sin, did he? And did he invent (institute) his own baptism?” One the limitations of the catechism definition is that they do not tell us as much as they seem to. And, of course, when you come to think about it, how could the rich and profound mysteries of God’s loving presence in the world be wrapped up in neat, precise, one-line definitions. Let us reverse the process we started. Instead of using the definition of Baptism as a way to understand the Baptism of Jesus, let us begin with Jesus, and then think of ourselves. What was he really doing the day when he came to John the Baptist by the river Jordan? He was arranging to meet his Father. He wanted to give a public expression of his desire to do his Father’s work. When he was a child, he was brought to the Temple and offered to God by his devout parents. Now, he was ready to renew his vows, to declare as a mature man that he was ready to work for his Father. And his offer was accepted. He was given an extraordinary sign of his Father’s approval. But the main point is this – at Baptism, Jesus met his Father. With the fullness of mind and the totality of his heart, he said – “Father, here I am, ready to do your work.” And with this, he begins his three year long life of preaching, teaching and healing. Most of us were brought to God’s temple to be baptized when we were infants. There was a real meeting with God when we were baptized. On our part, there was no realization of what was happening. Just the same, a loving Father claimed us as sons and daughters, touched us with his love, and gave signs to our parents to nurture us in the atmosphere of his love. If baptism is not understood to be a public meeting with a loving Father, then baptism is badly misunderstood. The Christian community which encourages the baptism of children needs to know this, to believe it, to experience it and value it. In every baptism, God our Father is present. He never fails to show up for the meeting with his love. Baptism (and Mass and Penance and Holy Communion) are public occasions where we meet our God. The meeting with Jesus and his Father are central. Jesus wishes to lead us to the Father every time we receive a Sacrament. Let us pray for a deeper understanding of this mystery. Much peace! Rev.
