We tend to create New Years resolutions with each new year and we too
have made some resolutions for the Adult Center that we would like to
share with you!
First, We are looking to do more! We are starting Bingo, A movie
Re-Run, and more local outings with our van to get folks together to
enjoy good company, get out of the house and have fun! Some thoughts
for local van trips are lunch and an event such as a movie, art museum,
or shopping. If you have ideas for outings, please let us know!
Second, We are in the process of price shopping for vending services.
We believe you should feel welcome and comfortable and be able to
enjoy a beverage and a snack at the Center. So soon, we will have these
services available for you!
Third, we would like to communicate more via email. We would never
share your email, only to use in case we needed to share some
information quickly and to keep you informed! If we had your email, we
could send you a copy of the VOICE before it gets mailed out and it
would be in color! We could send you an email if a program or trip is
cancelled or full. Its optional, but if you would like to join our email list,
just give us a call.
To make a tax-deductible gift that will enhance the lives of mature adults in our community today and tomorrow, please use the convenient
form below. The individual or families whom you have honored will be notified of your gift. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY
January 19, 2015
Signed into law in January 1983 by
President Ronald Reagan, the national
Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is a
celebration of Dr. King’s immeasurable
contribution to the United States, and to humankind.
Celebrated on the third Monday of January, the King
Holiday is a time when the nation pauses to
remember Dr. King’s life and work, but also to honor
his legacy by making the holiday a day of community
service, “a day on, not a day off.”

VETERANS CIRCLE
Our next Veterans' Circle meeting will be held
on Wednesday January 7, 2015 at 12:15 PM. We
will be showing a WWII documentary film about the
Doolittle Raid on Japan which took place on April
18, 1942. The April 1942 air attack on Japan,
launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet and led by
Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, was the most
daring operation yet undertaken by the United
States in the young Pacific War. Though conceived
as a diversion that would also boost American and
allied morale, the raid generated strategic benefits
that far outweighed its limited goals.
Longmeadow Maternal Association was started in
1835 and is one of the oldest Women’s Club
today! The Club is always accepting new
members and the group does great things
throughout the year! They provide scholarships,
support different causes and have great programs.
If you would like to meet new people, talk over tea
and treats, and have fun, consider joining today!
The next Membership Meeting is February 3rd at
the Community House (no January meeting).
The Board Meeting will be January 28, 2015 at
10:30am at the Adult Center.

Legal Matters
by William Scibelli, Esq.
New Massachusetts Probate Laws could have a
significant impact on your estate and how it is
distributed to your heirs. The changes can result in
less cost to the estate and more money for your
heirs.
If you have never prepared a Will or if your Will is
more than 2 years old, now is an excellent time to
consult with an attorney to discuss the best way to
handle your estate to financially protect your
spouse and children.
Longmeadow Legal Associates is a local family
law firm with over 86 years of combined legal
experience. We are located next to Hampden Bank
and across from Armata’s with ample free parking.
As a courtesy to all FOLOCA friends and
subscribers, Attorney William Scibelli will be offering
a free estate consultation to anyone who
mentions this ad. Preparing a Will is not
expensive; however, not preparing a Will or not
ensuring that your current Will is properly written
could be very, very costly!

The Longmeadow Over 60 Club started in 1964
under the Director of Parks and Recreation, Carl
Perkle. His vision was for the older citizens of
Longmeadow to have a place to get together; no
one wanted to include the word “old” hence the
name Over 60!
MEAL DELIVERY
We still are in need of more drivers for our Meals on Wheels
program. If you ever thought you might be interested in
performing this vital community service, now is the time to
step forward. Training is provided for a specific route in
Longmeadow and you can choose the days that are
convenient for you. The route consists of approximately 25
homes in town and requires about 2½ hours to complete,
from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. We ask for a commitment of one
day per month and offer a very flexible schedule. Substitute
drivers are available for backup in emergencies. This is a
very rewarding volunteer experience and you will immediately
realize how much your time and effort help the homebound
members of our community. If you are interested in joining
our group of drivers, call Ellen Gold, our Volunteer
Coordinator, at 565-4150.
Some Great Quotes…..
"Your life and mine should be valued not by what we take...
but by what we give."
- Edgar Allen (Founder of Easter Seals)
In the 1960’s, the group would meet in a building
behind the Storrs Library for activities such as
Bridge, Knitting and group meetings. Outgrowing
their space with over 300 members at the time, the
Over 60 Club had no where to meet. It was in the
1990’s when Greenwood School closed and was
taken by Longmeadow Parks and Recreation that
the Over 60 Club resumed their meetings. The
goal of the club is to promote socialization,
informational lectures, history, & entertainment.
The Club meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of
each month at 12:30 in the Over 60 Room at the
Adult Center.

Holiday Baskets were sent out to all our Meals on Wheels
recipients in December. They were filled with nutritious items for
emergency situations when we are unable to deliver their regular
meal. The baskets also had many treats for our clients to enjoy
during the holiday season. Felicia Klug, Dawn Barkman, and
Carlene Renaud were fantastic in their efforts assembling all the
baskets. We had many volunteers delivering the baskets: Jerry
Roberts, Dawn Barkman, Saul Finestone, Linda Glenn,
Patricia and George Keady, Marilyn Hurst, Alan Hobart, and
John Carey. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers for giving
additional hours to ensure our Meals on Wheels recipients
received their gifts.

wind of a culinary immigrant opening an Indian
restaurant just 100 feet from her own, her icy protests
escalate to all-out war between the two
establishments. It's a celebration of triumph over exile
as these two worlds collide and one young man tries to
find the comfort of home in every pot -- wherever he
may be. Helen Mirren is nominated for a Golden Globe
for this role.

Did YOU reach the “Donut Hole” last year?
If so… chances are you could reach it again!
If you have a Medicare Part D or Medicare
Advantage plan and do not get Extra Help, you will
reach that coverage gap when the total retail cost of
your prescription drugs reaches $2960. Then you
will pay 45% of the cost of brand name drugs and
65% for generics. Think what that means…. a $300
brand name drug will now cost you $135!
This is where Prescription Advantage can help.
Prescription Advantage, the Massachusetts
prescription drug assistance program, can help pay
for you prescription drugs when you reach the
“donut hole.”

Fire Department Lunch Presentation
TOPIC: Escape Plan
DATE: Tuesday, January 13th
TIME: 12:00pm in Cafeteria
If Fire Breaks Out In Your Home,
Will You Be Able To Get Out In Time?
Having working smoke alarms in your home
doubles your chances of surviving a fire in your
home. But you can do even better than that. You
can develop and practice a home escape plan and
increase your chances of escaping from a fire
without injury.
Practicing how you would escape from a fire
BEFORE it strikes will enable you to get out faster,
with less panic. In a real fire, the smoke is thick and
black - you can’t see
through it - and the toxic gases in it can confuse
you.
BUT - if you’ve practiced how you would escape
from your home, and you know two ways out of
every room in your home, you will
know the drill by heart and can get out
quickly even after you’ve been
exposed to disorienting smoke.
Don’t miss next months topic!

LIVING WELL
Life With Lupus
Join us on January 14th at 12:30pm for a
presentation by Community Health Charities of New
England as they demonstrate how this cruel disease
impacts individuals day to day lives.
Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can
damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or
organs inside the body). Chronic means that the
signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six
weeks and often for many years.
In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune
system, which is the part of the body that fights off
viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like
the flu). Normally our immune system produces
proteins called antibodies that protect the body from
these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune
system cannot tell the difference between these
foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues
("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that
attack and destroy healthy tissue. These
autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and
damage in various parts of the body.
Providing premier housing
and the services people need
to live a worry-free retirement.

800-633-6313 or 413-567-7800
Lupus is also a disease of flares (the symptoms
worsen and you feel ill) and remissions (the
symptoms improve and you feel better).
