Celebrated on the third Monday of January, the King Holiday is a time when the nation pauses to remember Dr. King’s life and work, but also to honor his legacy by making the holiday a day of community service, “a day on, not a day off.” VETERANS NEWS CLUB NEWS Maternal Association VETERANS CIRCLE Our next Veterans' Circle meeting will be held on Wednesday January 7, 2015 at 12:15 PM. We will be showing a WWII documentary film about the Doolittle Raid on Japan which took place on April 18, 1942. The April 1942 air attack on Japan, launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet and led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, was the most daring operation yet undertaken by the United States in the young Pacific War. Though conceived as a diversion that would also boost American and allied morale, the raid generated strategic benefits that far outweighed its limited goals. Longmeadow Maternal Association was started in 1835 and is one of the oldest Women’s Club today! The Club is always accepting new members and the group does great things throughout the year! They provide scholarships, support different causes and have great programs. If you would like to meet new people, talk over tea and treats, and have fun, consider joining today! The next Membership Meeting is February 3rd at the Community House (no January meeting). The Board Meeting will be January 28, 2015 at 10:30am at the Adult Center. ____________________________________ Volunteer Views All of us at the Adult Center wish you and your family a joyful, bright, healthy, prosperous and happiest new year ahead! The Longmeadow Over 60 Club started in 1964 under the Director of Parks and Recreation, Carl Perkle. His vision was for the older citizens of Longmeadow to have a place to get together; no one wanted to include the word “old” hence the name Over 60! MEAL DELIVERY We still are in need of more drivers for our Meals on Wheels program. If you ever thought you might be interested in performing this vital community service, now is the time to step forward. Training is provided for a specific route in Longmeadow and you can choose the days that are convenient for you. The route consists of approximately 25 homes in town and requires about 2½ hours to complete, from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. We ask for a commitment of one day per month and offer a very flexible schedule. Substitute drivers are available for backup in emergencies. This is a very rewarding volunteer experience and you will immediately realize how much your time and effort help the homebound members of our community. If you are interested in joining our group of drivers, call Ellen Gold, our Volunteer Coordinator, at 565-4150. Some Great Quotes….. "Your life and mine should be valued not by what we take... but by what we give." - Edgar Allen (Founder of Easter Seals) In the 1960’s, the group would meet in a building behind the Storrs Library for activities such as Bridge, Knitting and group meetings. Outgrowing their space with over 300 members at the time, the Over 60 Club had no where to meet. It was in the 1990’s when Greenwood School closed and was taken by Longmeadow Parks and Recreation that the Over 60 Club resumed their meetings. The goal of the club is to promote socialization, informational lectures, history, & entertainment. The Club meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 12:30 in the Over 60 Room at the Adult Center. We had many volunteers delivering the baskets: Jerry Roberts, Dawn Barkman, Saul Finestone, Linda Glenn, Patricia and George Keady, Marilyn Hurst, Alan Hobart, and John Carey. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers for giving additional hours to ensure our Meals on Wheels recipients received their gifts. “It's easy to make a buck. Fire Department Lunch Presentation TOPIC: Escape Plan DATE: Tuesday, January 13th TIME: 12:00pm in Cafeteria If Fire Breaks Out In Your Home, Will You Be Able To Get Out In Time? Having working smoke alarms in your home doubles your chances of surviving a fire in your home. But you can do even better than that. You can develop and practice a home escape plan and increase your chances of escaping from a fire without injury. Practicing how you would escape from a fire BEFORE it strikes will enable you to get out faster, with less panic. In a real fire, the smoke is thick and black - you can’t see through it - and the toxic gases in it can confuse you. BUT - if you’ve practiced how you would escape from your home, and you know two ways out of every room in your home, you will know the drill by heart and can get out quickly even after you’ve been exposed to disorienting smoke. LIVING WELL Life With Lupus Join us on January 14th at 12:30pm for a presentation by Community Health Charities of New England as they demonstrate how this cruel disease impacts individuals day to day lives. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body. Providing premier housing and the services people need to live a worry-free retirement. glenmeadow.org/info 800-633-6313 or 413-567-7800 Lupus is also a disease of flares (the symptoms worsen and you feel ill) and remissions (the symptoms improve and you feel better).
