As we close the 2014 season, we want to share with you the latest projects that are happening on the golf course. These projects are: the building of a pond next to the driveway, constructing a retention pond left of #4 near the property line, moving the sewer line (LASA) away from the creek behind #10 Green, and rebuilding the tee on #6. The first project for 2014 was the pond project. That pond is now completed but it wasn’t easy. We had a very wet spring thus making it very difficult to construct a pond. Also, it didn’t help with the ground water table being high during that timeframe because the underground water was seeping into the pond during the construction. The company had to pump water out quite often, and they also had to wait many days for the soil to dry out enough so they could excavate it. This project took long enough; that’s what happens when we cannot control Mother Nature. The pond holds roughly 675,000 gallons of water which is superb! Our target was 400,000 to 500,000 gallons. The second project was to build a retention pond on the left of #4. This pond was constructed in November and will not be completed until about May/June 2015. The purpose of this pond is to redirect storm water that comes from the housing development on the left of #3 and #4. The water is supposed to collect into that basin and then redirect water towards #3 green in that open land area rather than across #4 fairway. This open land is supposed to help infiltrate water into the soil. The entire area from #3 green towards the pines on the left of #4 is going to be a meadow/wildflower area. This wildflower area will not be mowed, it will be similar to the left of 12th hole. This meadow area will help slow down the water and allow the ground and vegetative absorb the water before crossing the 4th hole during a typical thunderstorm, not a deluge event. In December, Flyway Excavating started another project on the golf course behind 10th green. There is a sewer line that runs from the development left of #11 to the main line which runs parallel along with Little Conestoga Creek. In the spring, LASA was completing sewer line inspections and discovered the sewer pipe was exposed from creek bank erosions. There’s probably about 6 feet of earth carved out by raging water on a sharp bend. It was just a matter of time before the pipe was exposed. LASA awarded Flyway Excavating (they did the creek restoration project back in 2011) to move the sewer line away from the creek into the golf course. This project does not alter the golf course at all. LASA is also having Flyway “restore” or stabilize the creek bank that was severely eroded to help us and to protect their lines from getting exposed again. Lastly, we are in the process of shifting #6 tee towards the fairway, instead of the trees. We pretty much got the rough grade for now. We wanted the rough shape done before the ground freezes so that way we can let the ground settle all winter long. As of right now, we have the area roped off due to muddy conditions. Coming from #5 green, you can either drive down #1 fairway over to #6 or go around #10 tee, around #18 green and then cross #18 fairway over to #6 temporary tee area. Finally, we had to spray our greens for snow mold protection early due to a couple of snow events in November. We couldn’t delay spraying the greens for this mold because we didn’t know what the weather would be like in December. If we had significant amounts of snow in Dec. and had not spray the greens, we would be up the creek and that’s the risk we couldn’t take. Since we sprayed, we have not been able to mow the greens because it will remove the mold protection off the grass. If we mow the greens, we would have to spray 5the greens again and this chemical is not cheap. 5 Matthew Turner, Course Superintendent Member and Guest Safety AED update The old AEDs had become obsolete and the battery packs were no longer available so new AEDs were acquired. One is located in the lobby by the Pro Shop golf computer. The plan for a second unit is to locate it near the maintenance building and, during pool season, it will be located at the pool office. The traveling unit is stored in a red pelican case to protect the unit. We are looking into training during the winter months for staff and interested members. Employee Dedication We are pleased to have several employees that have many years of service with our Conestoga family. The following are those who have been with us for more than fifteen years.
