Christ Child Giving Tree—Thank You!
A big thanks to all parishioners for making the Christ
Child Giving Tree a huge success this year.
As a parish we were able to provide gifts for over eighty
children, provide many layette items for newborn babies in need and to help our own parish families in
need of some extra assistance this season with gift
cards. A very special thank you to the members of
our Prayer Shawl Ministry who donated hand crocheted
baby blankets, booties and caps. Many children will be

The Baptism of the Lord
Baptism of Jesus by John
John the Baptist was God's appointed messenger. Before
Jesus began his ministry, John had been announcing to
the people throughout the regions of Jerusalem and
Judea to prepare for the coming Messiah. He was calling them to repent, turn from their sins, and be baptized. He was pointing the way to Jesus. Then, all of a
sudden, Jesus appeared on the scene. Jesus came to
John to be baptized, but John told him, "I need to be
baptized by you." John himself wondered why Jesus
asked to be baptized.
So Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to
do this to fulfill all righteousness." John then consented
and baptized Jesus. As Jesus came up out of the water,
heaven opened, and the Spirit of God, like a dove, descended upon him. Witnesses to the baptism heard a
voice from heaven saying, "This is my son, whom I
love; with him I am well pleased."

Bishop David O’Connell
Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., underwent surgery
Dec. 29, in a Trenton area hospital to remove part of
his lower left leg reaching halfway between the knee
and the ankle. The surgery was needed to address several serious infections brought about by complications
with his diabetes.
Bishop O'Connell's surgery was described as successful
by his surgeons, and his recovery is going well. All
signs are good for a speedy recovery and rehabilitation,
and he does hope to lead and celebrate the ceremonies
of Holy Week, depending on how things progress.
We ask members of the community to pray for Bishop
O’Connell in the coming weeks and months, as he recovers and completes his rehabilitation. Anyone wishing to send a card or note may do so at the following

St. Peter’s sermon, delivered in the house of the newlyconverted Cornelius, presents the Lord’s universal forgiveness, and the good works Jesus did after His baptism.

After his humble admission of unworthiness, John the
Baptist baptizes Jesus. The Trinity then appears in a
striking vision to confirm Jesus’ identity as the Son of
God.

In today’s Gospel, (Mark 1:7-11), Jesus is baptized by John
the Baptist. Jesus had no sins so what is the significance of
this action? Through this baptism of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is
fashioning a new people of God. This event represents another divine intervention that fulfills the promise of the
Father, that he would send us a Savior. As the voice from
above says the Father is pleased with his Son, so someday
we all await the acknowledgement that God will be pleased
with our lives.

Donation to Benefit Orphanage
A special thank you to the Cunin & Loja families for
the donation of $800 for Baby Jesus Masses. Their generous donations will benefit an orphanage in Ecuador
that specializes in helping children with learning disabilities.
Annual Retreat at Loyola Morristown
Loyola House of Retreats, the Jesuit Retreat, in Morristown,
NJ, offers a time to relax, away from business problems and
family worries, a time to reflect and get a fresh slant on
your life, a time to pray, to reawaken a sense of the reality

Social Justice Corner - January 11, 2015
As high as the heavens are above the earth so high are
my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your
thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
Throughout the Old Testament, the prophets show an
evolution in their perception of God. Isaiah sees God as
loving, forgiving and without vengeance. We see in
Jesus the maturation of the perception of God as totally
loving. We see the Son as a reflection of the Father who
never uses violence to change humanity.
In his Good Friday Sermon in 2011, Pope Benedict said:
“Above all we want to make the voice of Jesus heard.
He was always a man of peace. It could be expected
that, when God came to earth, he would be a man of
great power, destroying the opposing forces. That he
would be a man of powerful violence as an instrument
of peace. Not at all. He came in weakness. He came
with only the strength of love, totally without violence,
even to the point of going to the cross. This is what
shows the true face of God, that violence never comes
from God, never helps bring anything good, but is a
destructive means and not the path to escape difficulties...This is Jesus' true message: seek peace with the
means of peace and leave violence aside.”

Chocolate: A Cure for the Common Cough?
Another reason to eat more chocolate: It could keep you
from coughing, according to doctors at the British National Health Service who presented
their research at the British Thoracic
Society’s winter meeting in London.
In their study, about 300 people at 13
hospitals who had persistent coughs
were given the chemical theobromine,
which is derived from cocoa, twice a
day for 14 days, according to the Daily Mail. Early results showed that 60 percent of patients experienced
some cough relief after taking the cocoa-based treatment.
The dosage of theobromine used in the trial was 1,000
mg. Unsweetened dark chocolate has about 450 mg of
theobromine per ounce, sweet dark chocolate has about
150 mg, and milk chocolate has about 60mg, according
to the Daily Mail.
While a daily bar of dark chocolate may contain enough
theobromine to have an effect on a chronic cough, researcher said, cough symptoms returned in patients
who were treated in the study once theobromine treatment ended.
Another study, done at the National Heart and Lung
Institute in London, showed that theobromine can block
the action of the sensory nerves, which halts the cough
reflex. That study found theobromine to be more effective than codeine, which is widely used to treat chronic
cough.
Researchers warned, however, that just because chocolate might have a clinical application doesn’t exempt it
from unwanted side effects.
“Eating a bar of dark chocolate a day which has high
levels of the compound may also be effective for people
with diagnosed persistent cough, although eating chocolate on a daily basis may have other unwanted effects,
including weight gain and so on,” said study leader Alyn
Morice, MD, head of the Hull Cough Clinic in Britain, in
the Daily Mail.

begin its Spiritual Adoption Program this weekend. The purpose
for this is threefold: To encourage
prayer for those contemplating
abortion, that they will respond to
God's grace and welcome their
child into life. To educate adults and children about
the development of the preborn child. To provide
mother's in need with a "baby shower" at the conclusion of the 9 month program. We hope you will feel

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 9 more payments to make totaling $76,021.74
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

BAUTISMO DEL SENOR (Marcos 1:7-11)
Juan Bautista apunta al que es “más fuerte”. La fuerza o poder mesiánico se expresa como bautizar con Espíritu Santo,
distinto a bautizar con aguan para el perdón de los pecados.
Quien lo administre tendrá una autoridad con la de Dios,
por una parte. Por otra, ese bautismo tiene una virtud mayor
a la de perdonar los pecados.
El bautismo consiste en un baño ritual público, en el que la
persona confiesa sus pecados y re-presenta morir. (Ahogada)
para liberarse de ellos, para luego re-vivir o recuperar una
vida purificada y adentrarse en la tierra nueva. El trasfondo
bíblico le viene del paso del Mar Rojo y del Gorda, y del diluvio. El bautismo, Juan lo entendía como inútil si no
“producía frutos de conversión”.
El bautismo de Jesús cabe entenderlo en ese trasfondo. Al ir
desde Nazaret hasta Judea, Jesús se suma a la renovación del
pueblo promovida por el profeta Juan. Pero algo peculiar
aconteció, según nos cuenta San Marcos: Jesús experimenta
una visión y escucha unas palabras que le cambian el rumbo
de su vida.
La rasgadura de los cielos implica violencia, no algo
“ordenado” o algo acostumbrado. Dios está por actuar con
todo su poder. El Espíritu que baja va a re-ordenar las cosas,
o liberarlas del caos. El Espíritu es invisible, de allí que Jesús
lo vea “como paloma bajando hasta….” Se trata de una experiencia espiritual que sella el carácter mesiánico de Jesús
como “bautizador” con Espíritu Santo; es “el más fuerte”,
porque Dios pone en él su fuerza para vencer todo desorden
diabólico y divisor.

Hay una canasta en el vestíbulo de la iglesia donde puede depositar estos artículos.
Esta canasta ha estado muy vacía últimamente. Necesitamos su
ayuda constante.
El domingo 18 de Enero el grupo del Coro & Armada blanca
estarán a cargo de la venta de comida después de misa en el
Gym.
CONFESIONES Y CONSEJERIA: El padre Michael Brizzio,
ofrecerá los servicios de confesión y consejería el último
jueves de cada mes de 7:00 a 8:30 pm.
ADORACION AL SANTISIMO SACRAMENTO: El primer viernes de 9:30 am a 7:00 pm en la capilla de la Iglesia.
MISA EN ESPANOL TODOS LOS LUNES. A las 7:30 pm, es
precedida por el padre Toni, invite a sus amigos a los familiares que asistan a la Eucaristía.
