Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
An unspoken question comes at us “24/7” these days,
because advertisers never sleep. With the help of cable
TV and the internet, they are always selling. Their
pitches amount to slickly produced answers to a question asked outright centuries ago by no less a person
than Jesus. That is “What are you looking for?” The ads
promise eternal youth through cosmetics; perennial
good health through pills, potions; and a figurative soft
ride through life with wise investments or literally with
expensive cars. No matter the pitch or the product, the
unspoken question remains: “What are you looking
for?”
Of course, when Jesus asked it of Andrew and his unnamed friend, He meant far more than an earthbound
search. We could expound on His words as meaning
what are you looking for in life? What motivates you to
get up in the morning? What is your ultimate interest?
What are your goals?
Whether we like it or not, we all have to answer that
question for ourselves. Otherwise we find ourselves
running away from it with all kinds of diversions, or
even perversions. The poet Francis Thompson (d.
1907) put it this way in “The Hound of Heaven.”
“I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the midst of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.”
Each of us have a call from God, and He will indeed
seem to hound us to acknowledge and live it.
The only way we will best respond to it is to step off the
punishing treadmill of modern life, and then to follow
the old railroad crossing sign’s advice, namely to “Stop,
Look and Listen.” Even better, we have the ancient
psalmist’s advice: “Be still and know that I am
God.” (Ps. 46:10)

First Reading: I Samuel 3:3b-10, 19
A young Samuel hears the Lord calling in the night,
and when prompted by Eli, responds to the third call by
saying “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Second Reading: I Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20
Casual sex was rampant in the community, which Paul
had to fight against by a powerful statement that “our
bodies are not our own,” and are instead temples of the
Lord.
Gospel: John 1:35-42
Right at the start of His public ministry, Jesus attracts
people. His cousin John the Baptist directs his own disciple Andrew, the brother of Peter, to Jesus by calling
Him “the Lamb of God.” When they meet, Andrew and
his unnamed friend hear Jesus ask: “What are you
looking for?”

Director’s Corner “All creatures on earth feel as we do.
All creatures strive for happiness as we do. All creatures
on earth love, suffer, and die as we do, and therefore
they are equally with us works of the almighty Creatorour brethren.” St. Francis of Assisi
In today’s Gospel, (John 1:35-42), John’s testimony inspires John, Andrew, and Peter to follow Jesus. Andrew
attests that Jesus is the Messiah. Any way you translate
it, Messiah (in Hebrew=anointed one), or
Greek=Christos. By any name, he is our Redeemer.

Annual Retreat at Loyola Morristown
Loyola House of Retreats, the Jesuit Retreat, in Morristown, NJ, offers a time to relax, away from business
problems and family worries, a time to reflect and get a
fresh slant on your life, a time to pray, to reawaken a
sense of the reality of God, and to grow in the precious
gift of faith. The men of St. Anthony of Padua Parish and
other area parishes are invited to join their brothers in
Christ on retreat the weekend of January 23-25. The
retreat begins at dinner on Friday and ends after lunch
on Sunday. For information and registration, call Stan

Social Justice Corner - January 18, 2015
I announced your justice in the vast assembly I did not
restrain my lips, as you, O Lord know. Psalm 40:10
What enormous gratitude we owe the prophets who
have always been the conscience of the people: Micah,
Isaiah, Jesus, Merton, King. This weekend we celebrate
the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who based his
philosophy and way of life on the teachings of Jesus.
King never restrained his lips; he continually spoke out
against injustice and, like Jesus, died because he frightened the powerful, angry and violent who covered their
ears and deadened their consciences rather than hear
the truth and recognize their inner demons.
On January 30th, 1956 someone threw a bomb onto the
front porch of the King residence in Montgomery, Alabama. Fortunately, no one was injured, but Dr. King's
parsonage was damaged. An angry, armed crowd
formed to avenge the attack, but Dr. King stood on what
was left of his porch and said:
“My wife and baby are all right. I want you to go home
and put down your weapons. We cannot solve this
problem with more violence. We must meet violence
with nonviolence. Remember the words of Jesus, 'He
who lives by the sword will perish by the sword.' We
must love our white brothers no matter what they do to
us. Jesus still cries out in words that echo across the
centuries: 'Love your enemies; bless them that curse
you; pray for them that abuse you.' This is what we
must live by. We must meet hate with love. Remember,
if I am stopped, this movement will not stop, because
God is with this movement.”
The crowd dispersed peacefully and Dr. King continued
his work of promoting justice and peace.

exercise or diet regimen.)
Heart Your Greens:
Eat leafy vegetables to reap health benefits
A WISE AND FAMOUS FROG ONCE LAMENTED HOW
HARD IT WAS TO BE green. Well, if another old saying
is true — you are what you eat — he couldn’t have been
further from the truth. Leafy vegetables are as easy
to prepare as they are full of essential nutrients.
Study after study has confirmed the benefits of verdant vegetables, linking spinach, collards, kale, and
their kin to:
HEART HEALTH. A salad a day may keep cardiovascular disease away. “People who eat more green,
leafy veggies have a steadier heart rate,” says Caryn
Giacona, M.D., at Riverview Medical Center, “so
doctors suspect [greens] contain nutrients that help
regulate the nerve impulses that keep your heart pumping.”
CANCER PREVENTION. These veggies may fight off
breast cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and bladder
cancer, among others. They might also prevent colon
polyps and other precancerous growths.
MENTAL AND NEUROLOGICAL HEALTH. Teens who eat
greens may behave better, with less risk of being either
depressed and withdrawn or aggressive. Older adults
who eat fewer greens may be more likely to develop
Alzheimer’s disease.
BONE AND TOOTH HEALTH. “Calcium and other nutrients in greens build stronger skeletons and prevent bone
loss over time,” Dr. Giacona says. The same compounds
strengthen teeth. In one study, older adults who ate their
vegetables, including greens, had fewer signs of periodontal disease.
CELL AND GENE HEALTH. Every day, your body’s smallest components are under assault from environmental
hazards. Compounds in these plants seem to prevent or
reverse these potentially cancer-causing changes. This
association has been observed in smokers, airplane pilots, and others frequently exposed to radiation and other health hazards.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
MINISTRIES
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 9 more payments to make totaling $76,021.74
and will be paid off in August of 2015. Along with these
important loan payments we continue to provide the
proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our
buildings and grounds in pristine condition, all the
while paying very close attention to costs. We are proud
to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced
substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.

II DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Juan 1:35-42)
Juan habla mientras ve a Jesús “viniendo hace él”.

has la muerte natural.
ayuda constante.
