Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Many Catholics today may be missing the point in the
way they make their moral decisions and they are passing on their error to their children. Here is a segment
from the book Still the Best Hope by Dennis Prager, in
which he quotes from a column by David Brooks of the
New York Times:
Director Mrs. Aileen Mary O’Brien
609-448-0141, ext. 21
Email:[email protected]
Office hours: 9-3 PM Monday – Friday
Director’s Hours: Office: Monday 10-4; 5-9 PM CCD
Tuesday 10-4 PM office, 5-9 CCD, Wednesday 9-4
office, 5-6:30 PM CCD, Thursday 10-4 PM office, CCD
5-9 PM, Friday 9-4 office. We are closed Sat. and Sun.
Director’s Corner:
“What has supplanted belief in the existence of moral
truths are feelings about what is moral. Many children
have been raised to ask, ‘How do I feel about it?’ rather
than ‘Is it right or wrong?’ …This has been confirmed
by an extensive study of Americans ages eighteen to
twenty-three conducted by the sociologist Christian
Smith of Notre Dame University and discussed by New
York Times columnist David Brooks:
‘When asked to describe a moral dilemma they had
faced, two-thirds of the young people either couldn’t
answer the question or described problems that are not
moral at all…
Moral thinking didn’t enter the picture, even when
considering things like drunken driving, cheating in
school or cheating on a partner. ‘I don’t really deal
with right and wrong that often’ is how one interviewee put it…
The default position, which most of them came back to
again and again, is that moral choices are just a matter
of individual taste. As one put it, ‘I mean, I guess what
makes something right is how I feel about it. But different people feel different ways, so I couldn’t speak on
behalf of anyone else as to what’s right or wrong.’
(David Brooks concludes): ‘Morality was once revealed,
inherited and shared, but now it’s thought of as something that emerges in the privacy of your own heart.’”
We have been enlightened by Baptism into Christ. We
know the point of today’s Scripture Readings is to emphasize that there truly is an objective morality, one
based in God, and that it is still, for every generation
presently alive and those yet to be born, a morality that
has been revealed, inherited, and meant to be shared.
To think otherwise is to think like the benighted Pharisees. Put another way, it is to pretend that your health
club membership card itself is what gets you in shape.

Fr. Michael Brizio, IMC will be helping us the last
Thursday of each month for confession or counsel in
the church from 7pm to 8:30pm. If you are interested
in an appointment, please let us know in the church
office.
First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6
God commissions Cyrus as king, and gives him direction, all for the sake of His chosen people of Israel.
Second Reading: I Thessalonians 1:1-5b
Paul thanks God for the dynamic faith of the Thessalonians, as expressed in their lifestyle, exemplifying their
nature as chosen by God.
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21
The Pharisees, reputed for their knowledge of the law,
apparently have no problem using the illegal means of
entrapment against Jesus. Of course, they are ignorant
of who Jesus is.
“O inexhaustible spring of Divine Mercy, pour yourself
out upon us! Your Goodness knows not limits. Confirm,
O Lord, the power of Your mercy over the abyss of my
misery, for You have no limit to Your mercies.”
-St. Maria Faustina Kowalska
In today’s Gospel, (Matthew 22:15-21), the Pharisees
and the Herodians are trying to trap Jesus in the things
he says. Our Lord answers them with a riddle-like response. To sum up the meaning of the Gospel, Jesus is
saying the Jews need to fulfill their civil duties, while
they remember to put God first.
Religious Education News: The Religious Education office is still in need of teachers, adult teacher’s aides,

Social Justice Corner - October 19, 2014
To you I call; for you will surely heed me, O God; turn
your ear to me; hear my words. Guard me as the apple
of your eye; in the shadow of your wings protect me.
Psalm 17:6,8
Having the strength and faith to continue to believe in
the presence of God in all of creation in the face of
horrific inhumanity, can only be a gift from God.
Nothing less than the depth of grace given to Mary, the
mother of Jesus, at the foot of the cross, can account
for Etty Hillesum's ability to continue to love and hope
while in Westerbork Concentration Camp. This young
Jewish woman watched thousands of her fellow Jews
led off to death. She watched her parents taken away to
another camp in Poland. She endured loss of family
and friends, deprivation, humiliation and physical suffering and continued to love and hope. Etty Hillesum's
example can give us hope when we are surrounded by
news of violence and atrocities. She continues to exemplify for us a loving human being who, because of her
relationship with God, never hates or seeks revenge.
“You have made me so rich, oh God, please let me
share out Your beauty with open hands. My life has
become an uninterrupted dialogue with You, oh God.,
one great dialogue. Sometimes when I stand in some
corner of the camp, my feet planted on Your earth, my
eyes raised towards Your Heaven, tears sometimes run
down my face, tears of deep emotion and gratitude. At
night, too, when I lie in my bed and rest in You, oh
God, tears of gratitude run down my face, and that is
my prayer. I have been terribly tired for several days,
but that, too, will pass; things come and go in a deeper
rhythm and people must be taught to listen to it, it is
the most important thing we have to learn in this life. I
am not challenging You, oh God, my life is one great
dialogue with You...And all my creative powers are
translated into inner dialogues with You; the beat of
my heart has grown deeper, more active and yet more
peaceful, and it is as if I were all the time storing up
inner riches” Westerbork, 18 August 1943 from An
Interrupted Life, The Diaries of Etty Hillesum 1941-43

Non-polio Enterovirus Prevention
There is no vaccine to protect you from
enterovirus infection. Since many infected
people do not have symptoms, it is difficult
to prevent enteroviruses from spreading.
Learn the Right Way to Wash Your Hands
You can help protect yourself and others
from non-polio enterovirus infections by—
x Washing your hands often with soap and water,
especially after using the toilet and changing diapers,
x Avoiding close contact, such as touching and shaking hands, with people who are sick, and
x Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched sur-
faces.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for non-polio enterovirus
infection. People with mild illness caused by non-polio
enterovirus infection typically only need symptom treatment. They usually recover completely. However, some
illnesses caused by non-polio enteroviruses can be severe enough to require hospitalization.
If you are concerned about your symptoms, you should
contact your health care provider.

Collection
We are still accepting donations for a number of our people working with horses in
stables in the racing industry. Many need help
with basic necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap or new socks and T-shirts. If you are able
to help, please bring your donation to the church office
or contact Fr. Pat with any questions.
Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to
assist young men who are discerning the
possibility that God may be calling them
to a life of priestly ministry. These
groups are designed to explore a priestly
vocation through prayer and sharing
vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are
not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their
vocation. They are designed to assist in discovering if the
priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way.
If you are a faithful, single, roman Catholic man, between
the ages of 18 & 40 and are asking yourself whether God
is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to
attend a discernment meeting on Oct. 26th at St. Gregory
the Great Parish. Please register with the Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office: [email protected] or
call 609 406-7449.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making
their generous donations. We continue to pay our monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now have only 11
more payments to make totaling $92,915.46 and will be
paid off in August of 2015. Along with these important
loan payments we continue to provide the proper maintenance and repairs required to keep our buildings and
grounds in pristine condition, all the while paying very
close attention to costs. We are proud to say that our
maintenance costs have been reduced substantially this
year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking
lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need to be
addressed, along with our sound and computer system and
backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that will
enable us to make these necessary improvements, which is
why your continued support of the Building/Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best condition.
The Mass Offering Total for October 12: $13,150.82. Your
donations are important; they help Saint Anthony of Padua
continue the good work in the parish and the community.
Please remember the Parish in your Wills and in your Estate Planning.
Catholic Annual Appeal
Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all diocese members to further the work of our ministries. We all have a
vital part in what we do in Christ’s name; we can all share
in what we do with a gift to the Catholic Annual Appeal. When we make a gift to the appeal, we follow the
command that we are One Family, Our Family in Christ
with every fiber of our lives. This year St. Anthony of Padua’s share of the goal is $63,000; pledged to date::
$62,150.00 paid to date:: $53,322.50. I am always grateful
and moved by the level of support you give to our parish;
thank you! May God continue to bless you and your family.
***The Annual Catholic Appeal in Action***
Why is the Annual Catholic Appeal Important?
Care of our Ordained, Supporting our Seminarians used
We provide assistance to the retired clergy of our diocese
with quality healthcare, housing, and on-going educational
and formative programs. And for those who have been
called to pursue a vocation as a priest, the diocese offers
support with tuition, room, board, books and healthcare.
If you have not donated or pledged to the Annual Catholic
Appeal please consider doing so. Your support of the parish
is very important. It is also important to support the Diocese
of Trenton for programs that provide valuable ministerial
resources for the parish and diocesan programs that support
services for the poor, food for the hungry, and education for
our children of faith. On a Diocese level we can do more
than any one parish can do alone.

XXIX DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Mateo 22:15-21)
estaba separando campos sino delimitando actitudes.
