THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD – JANUARY 11, 2015 Pg. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the FEAST of the Baptism of the Lord. It marks the end of the Christmas season. In submitting Himself humbly to the baptism of St. John the Baptist, Christ provided the example for the rest of us. If even He should be baptized, though He had no need of it, how much more should the rest of us be thankful for this sacrament, which frees us from the darkness of sin and incorporates us into the Church. His Baptism, therefore, was necessary-not for Him, but for us. On January 1st, we celebrated the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God. It was fitting to honor Mary, who was privileged to bear Christ the Lord. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer”. On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among men. Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace”, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace”. Right after this we plunge into the first part of Ordinary Time of the liturgical year. Ordinary Time refers to the period of the Catholic Church's liturgical year that fall outside of the major seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter). Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church-the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. The first Sunday in Ordinary Time focuses on the public entrance of Jesus with his Baptism: another way Jesus appears/reveals his divinity, an epiphany. What happened to the other celebrations? The Circumcision, the Feast of the Holy Family, the Presentation, etc.? These give way to the most important aspects of the life of Jesus or so called properly as the “celebration of the Mysteries of our Faith”; the basic tenets of our faith. We are already into the full swing of the liturgical calendar which will help us to immerse ourselves into the life and death of Jesus. The Ordinary Time Cycle begins on Monday, January 12th and will continue until Tuesday, February 17th. Alongside the official celebrations of the Mysteries of our Faith, there are also other popular devotions by various ethnic and national groups of which you are more knowledgeable and more aware. The Second Vatican Council encourages us to continue them besides celebrating the basic mysteries of our faith. We were blessed to have two seminarians here. I hope you enjoyed the shared/dialogued homilies. I would like to thank the generosity of parishioners as seen from the donations received during this festive season. The implementation of the Schedule for Ministries is underway. As seen below, we will be publishing the schedule one week in advance. There is no reason for anyone to miss their times. Fr. Sylvester has worked hard to make this schedule work. We will be taking down the decorations. If you can be of help, please let me know. Thanks to all for all you do both great and small! FR. THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest until justice is established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be “a light for the nations.” Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality. Gospel: Mark 1:7-11 John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a voice said, “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.” THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD – JANUARY 11, 2015 FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS An Archdiocesan-Wide Drive to Replenish Food Pantries Sunday, January 25, to Sunday, February 1, 2015 Nearly 325,000 children have difficulty affording food, that’s 22% of children in the 10 counties of the Archdiocese. PRAYER TO END ABORTION Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, and never to stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected, and our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice not just for some, but for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen! THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD – JANUARY 11, 2015 R.C.I.A.
