WE NEED THE “HEART” OF FAITH
TO “SEE” THE GIFT OF OUR BAPTISM
Let me be the last to wish you a Merry Christmas-sort
of. "Merry Last Day of the Liturgical Christmas
Season" would be more accurate. It might appear that
today's feast, the baptism of the Lord, has little to do
with Christmas or even little to do with Jesus, since
strictly speaking he didn't need to be baptized at all.
But if it appears that way, we should remember that
appearances are often deceiving.
The baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan River had
great significance for Jesus himself, for the readers of
Mark's Gospel, and has great significance for us
today.
The significance for Jesus himself. From the very
beginnings of the Christian faith, believers wrestled
with a tension, so to speak, between Jesus as truly
divine and as truly, completely human. Insistence on
his divinity, however, sometimes led to a
watered-down presentation of his humanity,
especially psychologically:
-Yes, like us, he got tired, hungry, and thirsty.
-But temporarily uncertain, needing to sort things out,
wondering what the future might hold-don't things
like that seem to take away from his divinity?
No, they don't. Those things are part of being human.
As Pope Saint John Paul II said in a general audience,
"We repeat with the New Testament, with the creed,
and with Vatican Council II that Jesus Christ 'has
truly been made one of us, like us in all things except
sin.'" Hence his baptism was not a mechanical gesture
that he realized was unnecessary but was willing to go
through for the sake of appearances. His vision of the
heavens torn open, the Spirit descending upon him
like a dove, and his Father's voice had to have been a
profound, deeply affirming experience. It was perhaps
a giant leap forward in his understanding of his
Father's will and the purpose of his life. After this
event, Jesus went into the desert for what we today
might call a period of further discernment. The more
clearly he saw his purpose, the more the devil tried to
dissuade him from it.
The significance for the readers of Mark's Gospel.
Studies of Mark's Gospel often point out that at every
step it leads up to an answer to the question, "Who is
this man Jesus?" Thus in Mark's Gospel, the Roman
centurion, upon seeing that Jesus had died, says,
"Truly this man was the Son of God." The Gospels of
Matthew and Luke give a strong hint as to the nature
and mission of Jesus with their infancy
stories-previews so to speak. Mark accomplishes this
same thing in a bare-bones sort of style with the
account of Jesus' baptism.
The significance for us today. We might wonder,
"Okay, so Jesus' baptism was instrumental in
clarifying-to himself-his mission and purpose. But
outside of that, is there any meaning for us, since he
had nothing to repent of, nothing to be saved from?"
The question virtually contains the answer. Nothing
to repent of or be saved from; yet in his baptism,
Jesus, though sinless, identifies himself with the
sinful: us (2 Cor 5:21). And not simply in the sense
of, "I can understand how they operate," but in
somehow taking on the guilt that was ours-not his.
In October of 2002, Saint John Paul II created a new
set of mysteries for the rosary to accompany the
Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries. He named
these the Mysteries of Light (or "Luminous
Mysteries"). The first of these is the baptism of Jesus
by John in the Jordan. In Antoine De Saint-Exupery's
classic book The Little Prince, the title character says,
"It is only with the heart that one sees correctly. What
is essential is invisible to the eye." Baptism makes an
invisible difference in a baptized Christian. It is only
with the "heart" of faith that we "see" it and all
spiritual realities.
We need the "heart" of faith to "see" the gift of our
Baptism and the most wondrous gift of all, the
Eucharist.

TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES, STUDENTS, CATECHISTS & VOLUNTEERS: Religious Education classes resumed
this past week with much excitement as we greet 2015 with a renewed sense of ministry and faith. We are all called,
like the Magi, to be "coheirs, members of the same body and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the
gospel" (Eph.3:6)
Classes are in session each and every Tuesday and Wednesday during the month of January.
Parents of students who will be celebrating First Communion this May are reminded that these children will be
receiving First Reconciliation on either January 24th or January 31st. Each class is scheduled to attend one of 4
penance services held on these Saturdays - please check your packet received at the parent meeting on October 28th.
At least one parent is expected to remain with each child through the service - please come early to sign in.
Baptismal certificates must be on file prior to the reception of this sacrament; parents who have not as yet furnished
this document must contact our office immediately. Specific details and reminders will be distributed next week
but in the meantime, should you have any other question or concern regarding First Reconciliation, your child's
catechist or any member of our staff is available to assist.
CHILDREN'S CATECHUMENATE PROGRAM - A reminder for families whose children will be receiving
sacraments at Easter Vigil 2015: The completed Baptismal Application along with the Godparent Information and
Documentation will be due on January 14th when you attend the Baptism Catechesis. Please note this date on your
calendar as participation for both the parent(s) and the student is mandatory. If you are missing this form and/or need
further information on the requirements for godparents, please see your Sunday catechist team or a Religious
Education staff member during your child's Tuesday/Wednesday session.
RCIA Classes also resumed last week on January 5th with an "Overview of the Sacraments". We will continue this
Monday, January 12th with a more in-depth look at the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. There will be
no classes on Monday, January 19, 2015 due to the MLK holiday.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in Chapel
Monday 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM ... Tuesday to Friday 8:30 AM to Noon
My dear Adorers,
During the weeks of November 30, December 1 & 8 (7) brothers and sisters of Jesus enrolled
as Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament. This brings our enrollment total to 4665 Adorers. During
these weeks our Lord was visited by 1751 Adorers in the chapel for a total of 761 hours. Will
you be the next new Adorer of the Blessed Sacrament?
"The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic worship. Jesus waits for us in this
sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in adoration and in
contemplation that is full of faith and ready to make reparation for the faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease." (Pope John Paul II)
The enrollment book is located in the Chapel. Just enter your name and take a numbered membership card and become an
Adorer of the Blessed Sacrament.

The St. Mark Debt Reduction Campaign was launched several months ago with Mass presentations and a mailing
to all parishioners. The purpose of this campaign is to help reduce the $11.8 million debt burden carried by our
Church. This is what creates the $110,000 monthly mortgage payment; in addition to our regular operating expenses
that average $350,000 monthly. To date, approximately 120 parishioners have answered this call. To these families
we extend our sincere thanks. To be successful in this campaign, however, we need many more families to respond.
If you have misplaced your pledge card & return envelope you were sent, there are additional ones on the tables
at the Church exits. Please ... we ask everyone to help support this important financial campaign. Thank you!!
