OUR SECULAR WORLD
IS NOT VOID OF GOD’S ACTIVITY!!
"If it weren't for ...." These words are used to accompany
the reality that events have shaped our lives. We can all fill
in the blanks with our own experiences-if it weren't for my
mother's death, my husband's illness, the Vietnam War, the
assassinations of the '60s, or the fall of the Berlin wall.
Each moment of testing was as important as moments of
joy. Things have happened in our world, and this has had
a lasting effect on who we are and the people we have
become.
World events are not only isolated images on a TV news
hour. Our spiritual lives are not simply a parallel little
world unmoved by the events that surround us. Pope
Francis has called us to listen and hear the cries of our
world because their cries fashion the shape of our gospel
response. They are not merely a bunch of unbelievers from
whom we need to separate, but they are the ones whose
cries shape our response in grace.
In Isaiah, King Cyrus thinks of his worldly success as
coming from his supposedly wise alliances and political
maneuvers. The prophet reminds him that the Lord has
been at work through his maneuvering to lead his people
to himself. God is supreme over all creation, and God's
will is being accomplished even if they know him not.
The Pharisees want to trap Jesus in a web of their own
political hot issues. The Herodians supported both Caesar
and the temple tax for their own political aspirations. The
Pharisees hoped Jesus would come down against the tax
and make the Herodians his enemies. The Pharisees saw
the tax as a crime of Jewish subjugation. They hoped
Jesus would support
the tax and thus alienate the common religious
opinion that others despised it. Jesus avoids their trap
by avoiding the confrontation. He proposes that it's all
about belonging.
Caesar makes the coins; the coins belong to him. What
belongs to God, on the other hand, is a silly question.
What doesn't belong to God? God's work cannot be
divided into what looks holy and what looks secular. Life
itself belongs to God. God's grace acts in and through the
events that shape our lives. Since all belongs to God, we
need to pay attention to the signs of the times, what's
happening in the real world.
Paul VI will be beatified today in Rome. He is hailed
by many who helped bring the Church into the
modern world. In implementing the Holy Spirit's voice
from the Vatican Council, Paul faced the daunting task of
leading us in updating our practices so that we could
actually make sense to the world and respond to its
growing needs to see Christ Jesus. There are many, like
the Pharisees, who blame Paul VI for entering the
dialogue with the world, but events cried out for a
response that modern humanity could actually hear and
understand. The Church did not create the modern world;
it would have happened without the Council. But the
Church does have to learn how to live in this world, not
simply sitting idly by and wishing everything were
different.
When presented with traps that would have us side with
faith or Caesar, our Church continues its call to announce
and bring the Good News. To announce it, we need to
know what our hearers will hear and how we can be
convincing signs of incarnating God's saving work.
By coming to us in his Flesh and Blood, Jesus helps us to
realize what is really holy. Yes, God is the all-holy, but
everything God made is holy-all creation and all human
beings.

for both parents (at least one must be present) and students and attendance will be taken, so please look for sign-in sheets in
the Gathering Space when you arrive. Due to the mandatory nature of student attendance, only the Communion classes will

ST. MARK OUTREACH - ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE
The month of October is our annual food drive to replenish our food pantry.
At this time the only items we need are: peanut butter, jelly, jars of spaghetti
sauce, tuna fish, mayo, macaroni and cheese, juice, soda, powdered milk,
canned fruit, small bags of rice, pancake mix, pancake syrup, soap, toilet
tissue, laundry detergent,
Early voting has begun in Broward. The 4th and 5th Commandments require that each
citizen take the responsibility to be an informed voter very seriously.
On this ballot there is an amendment that presents such a danger to the Common Good that
all of the Florida Supreme Court Justices have issued a warning about the seriously
negative impact this badly written bill would have on the citizens of Florida. It is
Amendment # 2, "The Use of Marijuana Under Certain Medical Conditions". The bill is
deceptive since Florida doctors have been legally prescribing "medical marijuana" for
many years, and the “Charlotte's Web" Law permitting doctors to prescribe medical
marijuana for children with cancer or epilepsy and other serious medical needs was just
signed into law by Governor Scott last June. The Florida Supreme Court Justices express
serious concerns that Amendment #2 is so broadly and poorly written that its passage
would result in young people of any age being able to buy marijuana without the
permission or knowledge of anyone. No prescription would be necessary, no parental
permission would be required as the bill is presently written. The justices' fears deserve serious consideration.
Our shelves are filling up again! Thank you to all the classes and families who have given so generously to moms
in need. Sometimes it is very hard for a mom to say "yes" to Life, The reassurance that she is not alone in her
struggle, that there are good people who will help her feed and clothe her child, who will provide a used crib or
stroller or car seat, can often make the difference between choosing life or death. Your donations are making that
difference for so many moms and babies! Thank you in Jesus' Name!

EVER WONDER ABOUT SINGING IN THE
CHOIR? Music is the heart of worship in many
Catholic churches, including St. Mark. Music at St.
Mark is planned to complement the Liturgy of the
Word, our pastoral homilies and our Eucharistic unity
as a parish. If you have ever wanted to or wondered
what it would be like to sing in our choirs, come give
us a try. Middle and high school students are welcome
to sing with the 9:30 Mass choir. For many of you
who love to sing at Mass, singing in the choir is only
a matter of changing where you sit. For 9:30 and
11:00 masses on Sundays, please contact Mary Lou
Corbiere by email [email protected]. For 12:30
Spanish choir Mass on Sundays, please contact Bill
Clifford by email [email protected].
