St. Mark Catholic Church
JUST AS GOD CALLED SAMUEL,
GOD CALLS US TO DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH HIS SON, JESUS!!
What does it mean for the Church, for us, today to be
disciples of Jesus the Lamb of God? Pope Francis says it so
eloquently: "It means putting innocence in the place of
malice, love in the place of force, humility in the place of
pride, service in the place of prestige. It is good work!"
Being disciples of the Lamb means that we must not live
like a "city under siege," but like a city on a hill, welcoming
and in solidarity. It means being open, proposing the gospel
to everyone, testifying with our life that following Jesus
makes us freer and more joyful. We Christians must put
innocence in the place of malice, love in the place of force,
humility in the place of pride, and service in the place of
prestige.
The word "lamb" appears several times in the New
Testament and almost always in reference to Jesus. The
image of the lamb might surprise us; an animal that is
certainly not characterized by its strength and hardiness
takes upon himself such an oppressive weight. The
enormous mass of evil is removed and taken away by a
weak and fragile creature, who is a symbol of obedience,
docility, and defenseless love, who goes to the point of
sacrificing himself. The lamb is not an oppressor, but is
docile; he is not aggressive, but peaceful. And this is how
Jesus is! He is like the lamb.
We are called to point Christ out to people, as John and
Andrew did. As followers of Christ, we must proclaim:
"We have found the Messiah." Like Samuel and John, the
apostles Peter and Andrew, we need to speak words that
will change peoples' lives. We don't need to go looking; we
find these people among our neighbors, our friends, or our
acquaintances at church. Christ wants our actions and our
words to both loudly proclaim that we have found the
Messiah.
Jesus has come as the Christ, the Anointed, the
Messiah. He makes sense if our interior ear has listened
also to our need for a savior. We must hear deeply our
incompleteness and our longing to be invited out of our
self-centeredness. Jesus continues to keep offering his way
and truth and life. Hearing the way and truth and life
summons us to a new direction. Hearing the Lamb of God,
the first disciples experienced a true epiphany; they had
found the Messiah. None of them could contain their
excitement in hearing the words of Jesus. We receive a
specific call from the Lord to follow and serve the Lord in
a particular manner.
God has chosen us and has called each of us by name.
When God calls someone by name, that indicates his
mission for that person. That calling by name and that
mission constitute a vocation. God chooses us as priests, as
consecrated religious men and women to serve the Church
and his people. God calls us to marriage, to live out a love
for one another in the mission of raising a family. Or God
can choose us to be single; to live celibate and chaste lives
for the good of the Church. Every man and woman needs
to encounter Christ, the Savior, in a truly personal fashion.
It is unlikely that it will be recognized from the start as
something extraordinary; only in time does one realize
who it is that is calling. We all have a vocation, a specific
call from the Lord to follow and serve him in a particular
way. Parents should be the first to point out Jesus to their
children and encourage them to follow him and listen to
their call.
The story of call and response is repeated in the life of
each sincere Christian. To answer God's call means more
than keeping the commandments. It means that one's life
is directed to waiting and listening for the guidance of
God. It means saying to the Lord, as Andrew did, "Rabbi,
where do you live?" "Where can I spend some time in your
company?" To become a disciple of Christ, we must have
a listening heart. If we are truly to be his disciples, we have
to sit at his feet every day. It must become our life. We
must make sure we stay until the Lord speaks, and when
we listen, we will start doing God's will, instead of doing
our own. Listen to Jesus as he comes in Communion.

My dear Adorers,
During the weeks of December 22 & 29 (6) brothers and sisters of Jesus enrolled as Adorers of
the Blessed Sacrament. This brings our enrollment total to 4671 Adorers. During these weeks our
Lord was visited by 120 Adorers in the chapel for a total of 105 hours. Will you be the next new
Adorer of the Blessed Sacrament?

into the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus. Be convinced that Jesus will help them. Have absolute
confidence and trust in the power of His love to bring them back to His Sacred Heart. For He
promised: I will reign in every heart, in every home, in every country throughout the world. I will
reign through the Omnipotent, all-powerful love of My Eucharist Heart.
The enrollment book is located in the Chapel. Just enter your name and take a numbered membership card and become an

Thank you to all who participated in Archbishop McCarthy High School's "Walk For Life"
on Saturday. All donations to the Hollywood Respect Life Office enable our volunteers to
assist moms through their pregnancy and for two years after the child is born, with whatever
help she may need. This year some of the donations will go toward renovating the new,
larger office that was donated to us last year. Knights of Columbus and groups from
parishes throughout the diocese have been donating their "sweat equity" to help us, and we
hope to be able to move in some time this summer. We are so anxious to be able to expand
our counseling and parenting class services!
On Thursday, January 22nd, we will mourn the 42nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton Supreme
Court Decisions which imposed legal abortion on demand throughout all 9 months of pregnancy across the nation.
"Today, on this 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we consider the past four decades in which our society has
legally permitted abortion. Since that tragic decision, many children's lives have been lost, and many suffer that
loss-often in silence. Yet God's greatest desire is to forgive. No matter how far we have each strayed from His side,
He says to us: Don't be afraid. Draw close to My Heart." .... As Christians we are called to oppose the culture of
death by witnessing to something greater and more perfect: A Gospel of life, hope and mercy." (US Catholic
Bishops)
If you know someone who has suffered from abortion, please assure that person that he or she is not alone; that all
the riches of Christ's merciful and healing love are waiting to embrace her/him. Please go to
www.hopeafterabortion.org or call1-888-456-HOPE or 954-981-2984 to reach Project Rachel, or Rachel's Vineyard.
Both are ministries of the Catholic Church through which those who have been healed from abortion in Christ's
Mercy, reach out to those still suffering. If you are pregnant and in need of help, please call the Hollywood Respect
Life Office at 954-963-2229.

Youth Ministry Summer Retreat: Our teens will be attending Camp Hidden Lake; a week long Life Teen retreat
in Dahlonega, Georgia. Camp Covecrest last year was a life changing experience for the teens so everyone is
excited to experience the beauty of our next summer retreat. In order to fund the retreat the ministry is conducting
several fundraising events. We are also looking for parishioners that would like to sponsor a teen from our parish
or would like to donate or help us find affordable transportation to and from the camp. If you or someone you know
would like to help please contact Deborah Czubkowski at 954-294-1558 or Teresita Ortiz at 954-661-1302. We
thank you for your continuous support. Please remember to include our St. Mark Youth Ministry in your daily
prayers.
The Youth Ministry meets on Sunday nights at 6:00 PM in the Parish Center. All high school teens are invited. We
would like to extend a special invitation to all 8th graders who will be entering high school in 2015.
