Whenever I think of snow I think of Las Vegas, at least a few weeks ago. Last December 31 the city of Las Vegas was
preparing for the event of the decade, maybe of the century—the wonderful, wintery wonderland of white precipitation we call
snow. No accumulation was expected but just to be sure the State of Nevada took its one snowplow, a 1942 Jeep fitted with a
snowblade, out of mothballs and sent it toward Sin City; after all, as we Nebraskans know you can’t sin if the streets are blocked with
snow. It was the topic of local speculation on how the snow would inhibit New Year’s revelers and if such snow would impact the food
and drink vendors who depended on New Year’s Eve sales of such things to feed their families. Long story short—it didn’t snow and
they sent the snowplow back to the mothball barn.
Another rare discovery of New Year’s Eve at Vegas is that it is illegal in the entire county to sell alcohol in bottles or cans from
6 a.m. December 31st to 6 a.m. January 1st. Apparently people imbibing liquor during those hours have the nasty habit of throwing
things, so the less dangerous the missile the less likely that someone will be killed. Bottles of pop, water, juice, etc. whether made of
glass, aluminum or uranium are not as dangerous and so can be sold during the stated 24-hour period. The more I thought about it
the more it made sense; that’s why all our family parties end in violence—cans and bottles (couldn’t be the alcohol). One of my
friends suggested that I watch the midnight fireworks display in Vegas; like that’s going to happen. While it may be a nice display,
and I love fireworks, the idea of staying up that late is foreign to a man who schedules his bathroom breaks from sleeping in the 3-6
hour range.
In the first few weeks of the New Year we always celebrate the Baptism of the Lord; the question is did He need to be
baptized? The short answer is no, but a longer answer is yes; no because He is the author of baptism but yes in that He shows us
what to do and at the same time sanctifies the water that will pour over us at our own baptisms. Baptism is the gateway to the other
sacraments, the washing away of original and all sin but it is also the beginning of our participation with the Christian community of

Altar Server Training
All 3rd graders and above and have received

here at the Cathedral. This is open to girls and
boys. We will have training Saturday, January
31st at 8:30 am.
We will meet in the Cathedral Square for
donuts first. Certificates will be given out to all
Altar Servers after training. Our goal is that
each Altar Server would only serve at least once a month or more

segundo grado hicieron su Primera Reconciliación el sábado que
aprendieron acerca y recibieron la gracia y el amor de Dios, como
él los perdonó de todos sus pecados confesados. También
tenemos todo un año nuevo para acercarse a Dios. A medida
que nuestros hijos sigan su camino a través de clases y luego
sus Sacramentos. Seamos todos un faro de luz para brillar y
animarles a continuar su caminar con Jesús hoy y todos los días
de su vida.
