Fraser Island conditions report Everything is protected – plants, animals, natural and cultural features Updated 9 January 2015 General alerts Visit: www.nprsr.qld.gov.au (Reviewed 9 January 2015) Stay safe at Lake Wabby: DANGER – Running down the sand dunes can cause serious injury or death. Jumping or diving into the lake can cause serious injury or death. Serious spinal injuries have occurred as a result of running down the dunes. Remember: Open fires must not be lit anywhere on Fraser Island. A temporary prohibition on using the fire rings at Dundubara and Waddy Point camping areas is currently in place due to high fire danger conditions. Bring fuel or gas stoves for cooking. Dingo warnings (Amended 9 January 2015) Juvenile dingoes are currently learning essential survival skills and testing their strength. Juveniles will quickly learn bad habits such as stealing food around campsites instead of learning natural hunting skills. Dingoes learn pack rules through play, showing aggressive behaviour to gain dominance. Young dingoes will try to dominate people, especially children. Visitors, tour operators and residents are advised to follow dingo safety advice provided, remain vigilant with dingo safety and avoid interaction with dingoes at all times. Please save the dingoes from habituation. Let young dingoes grow up wild and not reliant on handouts. Do not feed dingoes or leave food available. Areas of concern with increased human-dingo interactions: Extra vigilance is required along the eastern beach, particularly in the areas around Happy Valley, Eli Creek, The Maheno, K’gari, Cathedral Beach, The Pinnacles, Burad to Indian Head and Waddy Point to Duling including Orchid Beach. Please do not approach dingoes and be extra vigilant in these areas. Always stay close to children. Visitors to Eli Creek are reminded to ensure that all food and rubbish is kept secure from dingoes. Failure to do so directly contributes to negative interactions with dingoes. Stay with children at all times-escort them up and down the creek and boardwalk and to the toilet block. Visitors considering walking or jogging on beaches should exercise caution and stay in a group. Report dingo encounters, including dingoes hit by vehicles: Tell the nearest ranger or phone 13 QGOV (13 74 68)—mobile phone charges may apply. Alternatively email [email protected] Take note of: date, time, location, details of offender including vehicle registration number, dingo ear tag colour and ear location, and any other identifying features of the dingo and/or offender. For emergencies requiring urgent medical assistance, call 000 immediately. Track and beach conditions Ungowa boat ramp closure: Ungowa boat ramp is closed to all vehicles and pedestrians until further notice. Sandy Cape turtle rookery seasonal vehicle restriction: Vehicles are prohibited on the beach between South Ngkala Rocks and Sandy Cape Lighthouse between the hours of 6pm and 6am, from 15 November 2014 to 31 March 2015. Remember: Sand tracks are only suitable for high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with low-range capacity. All-wheel drive vehicles, lowclearance trailers and caravans are not recommended. Always drive to the conditions. The following roads are temporarily CLOSED: (Reviewed 9 January 2015) Moon Point-Happy Valley Road west of the Bullock Road intersection.
