School meals cost £2.10 per day
for each child. They are freshly
cooked each day in our kitchen
by Mrs. Johnson. Meals must be
taken as a full week. With the
exception of promotional meals
(such as Christmas Dinner) we
do not have the capacity to
offer ‘one off meals’ For ordering purposes the school office
requires one week’s notice to
change to/from school meals.

Staff vacancy
We have a vacancy for a member of
staff to work in our after school club.
Hours are Wednesday & Thursday 3.30
-6.00 ideally with the flexibility of being able to offer some before school
sessions too
Duties include;

Keeping children safe

preparing simple snacks

Organising a range of games
and activities

Our next parent workshop will be
held on Thurs 22nd Jan at 5pm. This
will be an opportunity for you to come
and see how spelling and grammar is

Mrs Chapman returns to work with Mrs Johnson in our school kitchen following her maternity leave.
Ms McKenney returns to work three days a
week. Ms McKenney will be teaching classes
and groups across the school as well as
continuing her role of Inclusion Leader.

Are you entitled to … Free School Meals and Children of Service Personnel
***URGENT***
A reminder to you of the importance of claiming free school meals if you are entitled to do so.
(even if your child is YR, Y1 or Y2)
Even if you do not want to take the meals and continue with packed lunches, this entitlement
gives you access to other extra-curricular funding; group music lessons etc.
The school is given this additional funding based on the % of ELIGIBLE FSM pupils and children
of service personnel (we don’t know who these are unless we receive notice from NYCC following
your submission of the form).
If you are not sure about your entitlement, please speak to Mrs Harrison urgently as we have to
declare our figures, which decide NEXT YEAR’S additional funding, on the 15th January – applications need to be in over the next few days.

Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now
and in later life. (National Curriculum Sep 14)
Mrs Johnson in our kitchen has ensured that we have a great tradition of home cooked food here at Sutton CP. This is now
being extended with the introduction of cookery lessons for children.
From the beginning of this term, every child from Y1-Y6 will have the opportunity to prepare, cook and eat some simple
dishes. The dishes which the children are preparing have been carefully planned by Mrs Humphrey alongside the
‘Cornerstones’ themes which are being studied in classes.
On the menu for Term 2 1415:•Y1-Y2 – ‘Dinosaur Soup’ (a very green soup of spinach, broccoli & leek!)
•Y3-Y4 – ‘Falafels’ ( a slightly spicy Greek snack made with chickpeas)
•Y5-Y6 – ‘Fishcakes’
Cookery at Sutton CP has been met with huge enthusiasm and what is really great to note is that every child tried every dish!
General reminders
Attendance
We ask that children are not taken out of school for routine appointments (such as dental/medical/optician) Proof of any
appointment during the school day is required. If your child is absent you should notify school by phone before 9.30 am.
Attendance is closely monitored as it has an impact on children’s progress in school.
School Uniform
We pride ourselves on the appearance of our school and this includes school uniform. There is plenty of choice within our
uniform code for children to express their individuality— please note that we do not encourage children to wear brightly
coloured trainers and shoes with flashing lights can be a great distraction in school!
Lunch boxes
We have clearly labelled trolleys to keep lunch boxes on for each class. Packed lunches are stored during the morning in a
cool place and children are asked not to keep their lunch in the cloakroom where there are heating pipes. We therefore
ask that when your child brings a lunchbox to school, it is small enough to fit on the trolleys. The trolleys take standard
size children’s lunchboxes but are not built to store large bags.
PE bags and kit
Every child has a named school PE bag which should be brought to school every Monday and taken home for washing every
Friday. Please ensure PE kit is labelled with your child’s name. Children from Y1-Y6 need black shorts, white T shirt and
pumps/trainers. You might like to send them with dark coloured jogging bottoms and a school purple sports hoodie when
the weather gets colder. Your child will be able to tell you whether they are planning inside or outside PE this term. We
do not have the space to store large unwieldy bags and ask that children do not bring them into school—school book bags
can be purchased for home learning/reading books. Jewellery including hooped earrings are not permitted. Pierced earrings should be removed for PE.
Water bottles cost £1.50 from the school office
Book bags can be ordered through the office at a cost of £8.
Medicines in School
If your child needs to take a prescribed medicine during the school day, please see Mrs Harrison in the school office to
complete a form. Non prescribed medications (such as cough sweets) are not allowed in school.
‘New to you’ uniform shop.
We welcome donations of good quality unwanted uniform for our ‘New to you’ school uniform shop. ‘New to you’ uniform is
available for a small donation to school. If you would like to browse our current stock ,please pop into the school office.
Lost property
We keep lost property items in the hygiene room. At the end of each term we have a good sort out and all named items
are returned to their owners—un named items are washed and put into our ‘new to you’ store or donated to charity.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED
Severe Weather

Weather reports suggest that during the next few weeks we can expect some severe weather
conditions.
We make every attempt to keep school open during severe weather however as a school we need to be
prepared. Our priority is the health and safety of both staff and pupils. If and when severe weather arrives,
it could cause disruption on the roads. The staff who have long journeys may be unable to get to school.
In the event of severe weather, a decision will be made by 7.45 am whether the school will open. This
information will be then shared in the following ways:-

Print this information and keep in a safe place.

Make sure your child comes dressed appropriately for the weather outside everyday. (coats, hats,
gloves, wellies)

If you can’t arrive on time come in when it is safe to do so.

Remember that unless the weather is really severe, the children are encouraged to get out into the
fresh air and have a ‘run around’. If it snows we will often go outside to play in the park!


Phone school as this blocks our telephone line.

Phone radio stations for information; they will broadcast details regularly.

Assume we are open/closed just because other local schools are. Whilst we do liaise with other schools,
ultimately the decision is based on the safety of our school family.

Send children to school until you have checked. We will understand if on such days children arrive late.
