BJP’s membership drive proves futile in TS OUR BUREAU Hyderabad: The efforts made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana State unit to enrol about 8 lakh members through traditional method of issuing membership receipts do not seem to have yielded much result. According to party senior leaders, party national president Amit Shah, during his recent visit to Hyderabad, told the State party unit that the system they had adopted was not acceptable to him and asked them to convert the entire process of membership drive into an online exercise. This has put the party leadership into a dilemma as they feel that it BJP national president Amit Shah Big Bazaar into big racket? Continued from P1 Mastan Vali, an advocate of the Hyderabad High Court, opined that deposit was defined in Sec 2 (b) of Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors Act, 1999. As per the Act 'deposit' means the deposit of a sum of money either in lump sum or instalments made with a financial establishment for a fixed period, for interest or return in any kind. The definition for deposit under the RBI Act and SEBI Act are different to definition of deposit under the AP protection of Depositors Act. As per the RBI Act and the SEBI Act, advance for sale is not deposit whereas in Depositors Act, there is not such exemption in the definition. As such, any person collects deposits with a promise to return in any kind falls within the definition of the Depositors Act. Hence, he opined that the government should suo motu enquire into this matter under the provisions of the AP Protection of Depositors Act, 1999 before any cause of action or grievances at large has taken place, he added. The Profit Club Card also attracts the provisions of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978 as it intends to mobilise deposits through its direct selling agents. A senior police officer also opined that it was an outright violation of the law of the land. As per the General Terms and Conditions of the Profit Club brochure, one could be enrolled as member through direct sales agents/agencies duly appointed by Future Group. It also absolves its own liability to fulfil its obligations if there is change in law. More, The Future Group sets a condition that in case of disputes, the Mumbai Courts have exclusive jurisdiction. In essence, if anybody wants to file a suit against the Future Group if it fails to fulfil its obligations, one has to go to Mumbai to file the suit. Practically, it is not economically feasible to an ordinary customer. It is high time that the law enforcing agencies took initiative to curb such illegal activities. would be a very difficult task to ensure that details including the addresses of the new members are included in the online list. They had given receipt books to the cadre and asked them to enrol members, but did not collect the details from them. Though the party leaders tried to ex- plain this to Amit Shah, he is learnt to have told them that there was no option but to go in for online membership drive and had set a high target of 35 lakh. Online membership drive will help in avoiding bogus membership. Normally political parties set target for the membership drive and give receipt books to its rank and file. In many cases, the leaders themselves pay the membership money and show some names to achieve the targets. A senior leader told The Hans India that the issue of membership drive was back to square one and all the efforts they had made so far had gone waste. Hasham Ashrafi from Kanpur also accused some Muslims leaders of making provocative statements only to retain their seats. He said such statements could benefit the leaders and their parties, but they would badly hurt the interest of common Muslims in the country. Moulana Ashrafi advised the critics of Islam to study Holy Quran, teachings of Islam and life of Prophet Mohammed before commenting anything against it. He said that Islam gave rights to all sections of the society, including animals and trees. He said it was Islam that elevated the status of women. The meeting was also addressed by MBT president Dr Khayam Khan, MBT spokesperson Majeed Ullah Khan, Khateeb of Jama Masjid Mahedviya Moulana Syed Bakhtiyar Alam, Zaakir-e-Ahle-eBait Moulana Ali Murtuza, Sunni Ulema Board general secretary Moulana Haseeb-ul-Hassan Siddiqui and others. Four abandoned girls wait in vain for their mom In a bizarre incident, a woman hailing from Mahabubnagar in Telangana, fed up with her abusive husband, ran away from home with four little daughters, but abandoned them at a Mumbai Railway Station. The husband is now refusing to take back the girls, who have been sent to a shelter OUR BUREAU Hyderabad: For the past few weeks, Mumbai police have been trying to trace a woman from Mahabubnagar, who abandoned her four daughters aged between three and nine at Kalyan Railway Station in Mumbai on December 28. Police who have already spoken to the father of the girls - Mahalaxmi, 3, Akhila, 5, Sapna, 7, and Rajeshwari, 9, - have not been able to convince him to take the girls back home. Inquiries by Mahabubnagar police revealed that the girls’ father was an unemployed alcoholic who routinely fought with his wife, Sujata Boya, 32, for not having a son. The Child Protection Unit of the Thane Police has temporarily shifted the girls to the Bhiwandi Children's Home and are persuading their relatives to take their custody. The girls, who only speak Telugu, have no idea about the day they boarded the train and where they had been abandoned. Investigation revealed that their mother, along with the girls and a male relative, boarded the train from their hometown and landed in Kalyan late on December 28. One of the girls told the police that their mother had instructed them to sit on a (For illustration purpose only) bench, saying she would bring them food, after which she disappeared. The girls revealed that the family survived on the money earned by their mother, who did odd jobs. None of the girls went to school. Inspector Madam Ballard from Thane Crime Branch, while interacting with a Mumbai tabloid said, “The girls’ father has simply refused to take back his daughters. He said we could do whatever we wanted, but he wouldn’t accept the girls. We are speaking to the man's relatives, especially his mother, hoping these innocent girls get a home and a decent life.” The cops are taking help of the village elders, including Mahabubnagar sarpanch Venkat Reddy to find a home for the girls. “We are also talking to the girls' grandmother,” Reddy said. Meanwhile, cops have a few leads suggesting that the girls’ mother is in Mumbai. “The CCTV camera footage shows the woman and a man leaving the station,” a Thane Crime Branch officer said. Hurdles ahead for Mission Kakatiya VRC PHANIHARAN Hyderabad: Restoring hundreds of choked feeder channels of waters bodies identified for restoration in Telangana under Mission Kakaitya poses a herculean task for the irrigation officials. The ambitious project which is one-of-itskind taken up anywhere in the country in the recent past was conceived to be implemented in four to five phases. The main objective of the project was to rejuvenate the chain of tanks which had provided drinking water as well as irrigation waters in Telangana State. However, over the years, the feeder channels from the catchment areas to the tanks had been encroached or several obstructions have come in their way, resulting in water flowing out through the feeder channels. Due to this, thousands of tanks are getting dried off, or getting fewer quantities of water at many places in the State. Speaking to The Hans India, PPMU Project Director Dr G Malsur said, “Restoring feeder channels is one of the crucial aspects of the Mission Kakaitya. However, as these tanks are existing ones, their maps are available and their feeder channels were already identified ones. And, we are taking care of this key component of the project.” Once these feeder channels have been restored, officials feel that they will not only bring water into the tanks, but also cause recharge of ground water, bring down fluoride levels and sustain the eco-systems survived on these thanks and their feeder channels for decades. Besides, there are hundreds of rain-fed tanks and chain tanks which would be filled by waters coming through the canal system. It is in case of these tanks that the officials are focusing to work on to save every drop of waters coming from the catchment areas. However, the southwest monsoon which provides about 70 per cent of the rain fall in the area has been played a taunting game during most of the time since 2006. Of the 464 mandals in the State, only 43 had recorded normal to excess rainfall, and the overall deviation from the normal rainfall had stood at 48 per cent during the last year. Similarly, with a few exceptions even the district-wise and seasonwise rainfall in Telangana had witnessed much deviation from the normal rainfall for most of the time since 2006. It was against this backdrop, 9,300 tank restoration works needed to be carried out during the current year, TS Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao said. The target set was to complete the works much ahead of the onset of southwest monsoon, which normally keeps its date with Telangana around first and second weeks of June. As part of speeding up of the works, 50 per cent of tender process would be completed by January 26, and scrutiny of 5,302 tanks had already been completed, he said.
