Wed, Jan 21, 8:00 – 10:00, Ladies Night “Unplugged” with Julie Corbalis The Village Voice just named Guns N’ Hoses “New York’s Best Tribute Band of 2014”! — This all-female Guns N’ Roses tribute band from Brooklyn will perform at 12 Grapes in Peekskill on Saturday, January 10th. Guns N’ Hoses frequently performs at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and Rockwood Music Hall, The Stone Pony in Asbury Park and other prestigious clubs. This is their second appearance at 12 Grapes, and last time out, the audience went wild. The Village Voice put it best: “Tribute bands are hit or miss. When the good ones are great… they create something completely new… Such is the case with the all-female Guns N’ Roses tribute band Guns N’ Hoses… [They] rock the songs that inspired their act on a level G N’ R would be proud (and jealous) of. The women hit the wailing — and wailing guitars — to a T, adding a dose of their own flair.” The review continues, “Fishnets, studded leather and hair flips only up the badass quotient, not to mention a hotness factor that puts the original acts to shame.” Guns N’ Hoses is a veritable super group of the city’s hottest, nationally touring musicians — Erin Marsz (Axl Hose), Charlene Kaye (Gash), Julia Adamy (Muff McKagan), Emmy Wildwood (Lizzy Stradlin), and Gina Ilasi (Stephanie Adler). They break hearts “and a few jaws” every show with the raucous Rock of classic GNR. They actually met Slash in LA at one of their rehearsals, and their rendition of “Sweet Child of Mine” stopped him in his tracks. Slash’s Twitter message read, “Just met an all-girl band called Guns N’ Hoses... Cool chicks!... They sound pretty tight, I have to say.” New England Music News wrote: “The Hoses are not a tribute band that sound just like the original. They are not a collection of eye-candy, thrown together that can just kindasorta play instruments. They are not hipster smartasses mocking the over-the-top silliness of the original. They are a talented band that really appreciates the original GNR sound, and has fun with it.” The band totes the tagline, “Welcome to the Vajungle”. And while they don’t take themselves too seriously, when it comes to their music, Guns N’ Hoses is professional as it gets. They consistently promise to turn every show into a Rockin’ ’80s hair metal party. Guns N’ Hoses will be performing on Saturday, January 10th from 9:30–11:30 pm. There is a $10 entertainment fee. For best seating, 12 Grapes recommends calling early for dinner & show reservations. The groups have collaborated with numerous artists including Black Thought, Questlove, Erykah Badu and Common. Individually, Zap Mama & Antibalas incorporate a multitude of genres. Together the result is unmatchable. This performance will combine the vocal technique and European polyphony of Zap Mama with the New York City Latin funk which Antibalas, Afrobeatís premier secondwave ensemble, is famous for, along with traditional drumming of Cuba and West Africa. This show will expand the musical horizons for everyone who appreciates live performance. Palm Bay International will host a tasting of wines/spirits in the lobby at 7pm. This show is part of the Palm Bay International World Beat Series. Zap Mama is the music act of Belgian artist Marie Dalne who sings polyphonic and Afro-Pop music. It’s a harmonic music with a mixture of infused African vocal techniques, Urban and Hip-Hop with emphasis on voice. The worldwide success of Zap Mama, and an ensemble of female polyphonic singers, inspired influences in American Hip Hop, Nu-Soul, Jazz and elements of Pop. Polyphony is a texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to music with just one voice, called monophony. The evolving musical compositions created a diverse band of singers and musicians for Zap Mama, who says, “The voice is an instrument itself. It’s the original instrument — the most soulful instrument, the human voice. Singing songs in French and English with African World Music Roots.” To understand why this show is so worth seeing, Antibalas perhaps Molly Darcys puts it best: “Rhythm is what makes a good Afrobeat record,” says Gabriel Roth, Daptone Records co-founder, producer and connoisseur of all things funky. “Not just the rhythm section, but the rhythm of the horns, the rhythm of the vocals, the rhythm of the keyboards, everybody’s rhythm. It’s not just being about being right or wrong in your rhythm, or being good at it, but itís about feeling something the same way, swinging the same way, anticipating things the same way, and hitting things the same way ó everybody hearing music the same way, and being able to turn all those instruments into one voice. Antibalas is the only band that can do that, right now. That’s why they’re still at the front of the scene, after all these years.” Fourteen years after their first gig, and five since the release of their last album, 2007’s Security, Antibalas is back with their fifth full-length release. Simply titled Antibalas, the album is both a blazing reaffirmation of the NYC band’s collective musical strengths and a hard-hitting continuation of their funkified excursions into what Antibalas founder and baritone saxophonist MartÌn Perna calls, “our vault of esoteric sounds and knowledge.” Commenting on their new fiveweek tour with Zap Mama, Antibalas said, “On this tour, we’ll be doing something completely new, joining them (Zap Mama) during their set, having them join us in our set, and fusing our two musical worlds together in front of your eyes and ears. This is something you wonít want to miss.” For tickets ($38), call the box office or order online. We have 7, starting at the root, or base chakra. The root chakra (red) relates to our survival; i.e., our physical needs being met, feeling safe, and feeling like we belong in our particular community. The second chakra (orange) is about two inches below your navel, and relates to emotion, prosperity, sexuality and pleasure. Located an inch or two below your breastbone (the high stomach region) is your third chakra (yellow), also called the solar plexus chakra. This relates to your will, drive, ego and ambition. It’s the big “I want,” and “I deserve, “ and the source of much of your power. The 4th chakra (green or pink) is located in the center of your chest, and is appropriately named the heart chakra. This represents our loving connections to others and to ourselves. The fifth chakra (blue) is also called the throat chakra, and is found in the same area. Our ability to speak our truth and listen to the truth of others (including spiritual truth) is located here. The 6th chakra (indigo) is found just above the midpoint of your eyebrows, and is nicknamed “the third eye.” This relates to our intuition and our ability to envision our future, i.e. our imagination. At the top of your head in the center is the crown chakra (white or violet), and it represents our connection to Spirit and Unity Consciousness. How open or closed each chakra is will determine how much or how little energy flows in or out of that chakra. This affects the quality of our lives in different ways. For instance, if your second chakra isn’t open enough, it will be hard for you to manifest financial abundance. It will also affect your ability to relax and be open to receiving pleasure. On the other hand, someone with excessive second chakra energy may seem creepy to oth- ers, as if his or her sexual energy is invasive or too aggressive. It’s the same with each of the chakras. Someone with a contracted heart chakra will have a difficult time letting love in or giving love out, while the person with an overly expansive heart chakra may enter into co-dependent relationships, or give to the point of exhaustion. There are many techniques available to balance and open your chakras. Spending time out in nature is an easy way to balance your root chakra. Moonlight and bathing will balance the second chakra, while sunlight and exercise will balance the solar plexus chakra. Spending time with people you love, animals and small children will help open the 4th, or heart chakra. The 5th or throat chakra can be empowered through singing or chanting. (If the 5th chakra is too open, leading to excessive chattiness or gossip, try spending more time listening than speaking). You can open your 6th or third eye chakra by paying attention to hunches and looking for synchronicities, as well as by giving yourself time to dream. The 7th or crown chakra is strengthened through prayer, gratitude and doing good works for others. There are many other ways to keep your chakra system healthy, such as yoga, wearing the corresponding essential oils for each chakra, or eating food in the same color as a specific chakra. With a little research you will find many more ways. Do what feels pleasurable and energizing. Wishing you good health and vibrant energy…xo Angela Pizzarello is a professional Psychic and Emotional Freedom Coach. She can be reached at tarotstar@yahoo, or at 203-532-1159. MARSHALL CRENSHAW PERFORMING AT DARYL’S HOUSE IN PAWLING Marshall Crenshaw returns to the Hudson Valley with a performance at Daryl’s House on January 17th at 9PM. Born near Detroit, Michigan, Marshall Crenshaw began playing guitar at age ten and he received his first break playing John Lennon in the off-Broadway company of Beatlemania. In 1987, he played Buddy Holly in the Richie Valens biopic La Bamba. While living in NYC, he recorded the single “Something’s Gonna Happen” for Alan Betrock’s Shake Records, which led to a deal with Warner Bros. His debut album, Marshall Crenshaw was acclaimed as a pop masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a first-rate songwriter, singer and guitarist. The record spawned the Top 40 single “Someday, Someway,” which rockabilly singer Robert Gordon covered and scored a hit with a year earlier, and other classics such as “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time”, “Whenever You’re On My Mind” and “Cynical Girl.” Over the course of a career that has spanned three decades, 13 albums and hundreds of songs, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of melody, craftsmanship and passion, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base. Marshall Crenshaw has recently started releasing his music on a subscription based EP series available only on 10” vinyl and digital download. Each EP consists entirely of newly recorded, neverbefore-released material, encompassing a new original Crenshaw composition, a classic cover tune, and a new reworking of a time-honored Crenshaw favorite. Marshall is also kept busy touring around the country and hosting his radio show “The Bottomless Pit” every Saturday on WFUV. Thoracic outlet syndrome or (TOS) is a medical syndrome, or collection of disorders, that are associated with compression of the thoracic outlet. Pain, tingling loss of feeling, weakness and swelling; all around the upper chest and arms are some of the symptoms of TOS. The cause of TOS is that of a repetitive stress injury, an acute injury, a complication of a preexisting condition or an evolution to a previous injury. The thoracic outlet is the space between the collar bone and the first rib. You have three main anatomical components that run through this space: the subclavian artery, the subclavian vein and the brachial plexus. The subclavian artery and subclavian vein are large blood vessels that carry blood to and from the arm, shoulder and hand as well to and from areas of the head and neck. The brachial plexus is part of the neurovascular bundle and is a large bundle of nerves that control (muscle contraction and sensation) the arms, hands and shoulder. In laymans terms, these structures are all major components of the body’s plumbing, electrical and data systems. And their condition as well as those body parts they feed can be significantly impacted if compressed. Thoracic outlet syndrome occurs when the suclavian artery, subclavian vein or brachial plexus is compressed within the thoracic outlet. Musicians, especially guitarists and bassists are susceptible to this compression because of the shoulder strap they wear. There are different symptoms and affects on the body depending on what item is compressed, and as such there are different forms of thoracic outlet syndrome. There are three types of thoracic outlet syndrome: NEUROGENCIC THORACIC OUTLET (NTOS) Where there is compression of the brachial plexus. Compression of this major nerve bundle may result in weakness of the entire upper extremity depending on which muscle group is affected. There also can be pain, numbness, tingling and loss of sensation of the upper extremity. VASCULAR THORACIC OUTLET (VTOS) Where the subclavian artery or subclavian vein is compressed and blood flow is restricted. The blood is the main transport system of the body delivering fuel and oxygen throughout the body and removing waste before it can build up and toxify the body. Compression on one or both vascular structures restricts blood flow and can ressult in pain, swelling, sensation changes and muscle cramping. COMMON THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME (CTOS) Also known as non-specific TOS and disputed TOS. This version, although having symptoms similar to VTOS and NTOS, displays no compression of vascular or neurological structures. There are many potential causes for TOS, including scalene muscle (muscles on front of neck) spasm, a cervical rib (transverse process excess growth), hyperabduction syndrome (shoulders retracted in military stance), post collar bone fracture, vertebral subluxation and costoclavicular syndrome. Treatment would have to follow a thorough physical examination by a proper health care provider. Appropriate diagnostic studies such as X-rays, MRI and CT scans to rule out excessive bone growth and doppler studies to eliminate any vascular compromise. If its determined that there is no bony or anatomical changes resulting in the symptoms. Then herbal antiinflammatories, massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic and physical therapy have all had positive results. M ULDOON AND M ELINDA O’B RIEN REVIEW: WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE: South Pacific By Jim Petrillo (reprinted as WBT encores South Pacific through January 25.) Who doesn’t like a good Rodgers & Hammerstein musical? South Pacific is truly one of their best works. The music is classic Broadway and the story line in cohesive. This musical is set on a Pacific Island paradise during World War II. Within this play are two love stories, tragedy and a lesson on prejudice, plus a lot of great, memorable music. The show opens with a wonderful rendition of “Dites-Moi” sung by Ngana and Jerome; Emile De Becque’s young children. This opening number set the stage and pacing of what would be a delightful and professional performance. We soon are introduced to Mr. De Becque, played by the extremely talented George Dvorsky and Ens. Nellie Forbush played by Haley Swindal. Ms. Swindal’s beautiful singing voice had the audience full of anticipation for her next number, many of which were backed up by the talented, beautiful actresses who played the nurses. The audience truly loved “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.” Let’s not forget the Sailors and Seebees in the cast headed by Luther Billis, played by Bill E. Dietrich. The men’s strong voices and tight harmonies filled the theater with wonderful tones. Their performance of “Bloody Mary” along with Joanne Javien who played Bloody Mary was incredibly fun a full of energy. Captain Joe Bracket played by James Van Treuren lands on the island to take on a dangerous mission. He is introduced to Bloody Mary’s daughter Liat and quickly fall in love. Their chemistry and singing was magical and the staging was inventive and effective. Act II opens with three strong numbers; “Happy Talk” and “Honey Bun” are full of fun and shows off this cast’s talent. Joe Cable’s “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught” gave us reason to think about its true meaning and message that has stood the test of time and rings true today. Directed by Charles Repole, Choreographed by Michael Lichtefeld with musical direction by Leo Carusone. WBT’s presentation of South Pacific will leave you smiling as you leave the theater with these wonderful show tunes running through your mind. South Pacific runs through January 25, 2015. Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl (Jonathan Nelson), a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a “dry” spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student (Justin Krass) in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college— a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan, which he devises with his wife’s (Karen Symington) help, is to offer collaboration to the student; an idea which the younger man is reluctant about. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play. Rounding out the cast is Helga ten Dorp (Connie Dyckman) the ESP gifted sleuth and attorney, Porter Milgrim (Scott Jones).
