Comedy and Tragedy
The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents
Comedy and Tragedy in the Sumner McKnight Crosby
Jr. Gallery, 70 Audubon Street, 2 FL, New Haven. The
exhibition is curated by Tony Juliano and features
artwork by Amie Ziner, Audrey Kantrowitz, Edward R.
Shaw, Janet Croog, Jesse Richards, and Kimberly
Van Aelst. Comedy and Tragedy will be on view from
January 13th to February 27th. A public reception
will take place on January 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Comedy and Tragedy explores the strange
intermingling of comic and tragic themes in art,
society, and daily life, leaving viewers to decide for
themselves what comedy and tragedy really are. The
show’s curator is artist Tony Juliano, whose own
artwork explores the themes and moods found in the
show. Tony says, “I found myself interested in artists
such as Edvard Munch and Francis Bacon, who
produce a personally symbolic art that has a touch of Janet Croog
humor in a very dark disturbing way, like my own art. I’ve brought together Connecticut
artists whose themes include humor, sadness, whimsy, and death.”
Curator Tony Juliano quotes Charlie Chaplin’s “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up,
but a comedy in long-shot” as an apt motto for the show.
For more information about Comedy and Tragedy please contact Debbie Hesse at the
Arts Council, (203) 772-2788 or [email protected].

Caravaggio's Toys
Photographs by Joy Bush
January 9 - January 30, 2014
Artist Reception: January 10th, 6-8 pm
Caravaggio’s Toys pays homage to the idea of collecting as a social phenomena.
Photographing these objects as if each had the status of a relic, I approach them with the
seriousness that Baroque painters would have given to the subjects of their portraits. With
the employment of chiaroscuro lighting and the placement of each toy in the camera's
frame, I give larger than life importance and seriousness to these stuffed, lowbrow figures.
The series extols the quality of light in the photographic image while maintaining a lively
subtext of humor.

Rockless Volume
Zachary Keeting & Anahita Vossoughi
with works by Loren Myhre
A sculpture of disorientation. A painting of flux.
Anahita Vossoughi transforms and transfigures grotesque juxtapositions into an art of
destabilization. She builds bodies in-between, self-aware of their inherent social and
cultural contradictions, their limitations and vulnerabilities. She torques her materials,
combines found objects with traditional processes, and is a modification maximalist. Often
referencing body parts, her sculptures have a pronounced pull towards our own physical
and psychological space. They are wrapped, pinched, cut and carefully off-balanced.
Perched out on limbs, sprawled out on floors, balancing and posing, these bodies call into
question accepted notions of harmony, excess, and beauty. Each form is a spectacle of
ornamentation: from silicone to prosthetics to jewelry to rouge. Odd juxtapositions are a
redirection tactic to look here, think there. The forms challenge us to reevaluate what a
body is, what it can be, what it should be.
Zachary Keeting’s paintings swirl and clatter. They’re down in the orchestra pit under the
timpani, and watching quietly from the back of a cafe. Multiple moving parts vie for
prominence, some garish some tender. He punches, scrapes, shakes, blots, pours, and
stains. The surfaces are physical, riddled with overt gesture, yet built slowly. They’re
improvisational, yet each image refers to a specific life-situations, to specific people. His is
striving for an art of realistic complication, of crosscurrents and contradictions, group
energy. He admires chaotic Robert Altman scenarios: overlapping voices, overlapping
thoughts, overlapping desires. This is an art of more. More complexity, more concealment,
more fluidity, more radical balance. Multiple personalities in every scene, brave with
generosity.
Rockless (without rocks, between reckless and raucous) Volume (three-dimensional
space, mind-space, loudness).
Who is volume and who is rockless? Both Vossoughi and Keeting are temporally
aligned. They approach the substance of life from very different directions, with clear
unique sensibilities. Here is their show.
Photo Exhibit at Paul Mellon Arts Center
The Paul Mellon Arts Center will stage an exhibition of photos from the Choate Rosemary
Hall’s Archives upon the occasion of the School’s 125th Celebration, from January 6
through March 7. The Arts Center is located on the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall in
Wallingford, Connecticut. The gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. when school is in
session, and is free of charge.
This year’s milestone offers an opportunity for our community to reflect upon the
extraordinary achievements and impact of our ‘school upon the hillside’ during its first 125
years. From the experimental and unconventional educational ideas of its earliest
founders to its present day position as a global leader in secondary school education, The
Choate School, Rosemary Hall, and now Choate Rosemary Hall have proven to be a
place conducive to bold risk-taking and innovation, as well as character formation and
academic endeavor.
Our campuses, here in Wallingford and in Greenwich, have been home to exceptional
students, faculty, and staff over the last 125 years and our buildings are just as much a
defining element of the Choate Rosemary Hall legacy as those who have passed through
them. As we examine the history of these structures, we also celebrate the lives they have
helped shape.
See Artwork by Judith Gay and Rosemary Serfilippi
"Road Less Taken" by Judith Gay, watercolor
The Madison Art Society is happy to present the work of Clinton artist Judith Gay and
Northford artist Rosemary Serfilippi. Their beautiful watercolors and oils are on exhibit at
the Madison Town Hall, 8 Campus Road in Madison, CT during the months of January
and February. The show is open to the public and can be viewed during normal business
hours.
Judith Gay is a local artist, residing in Clinton. As her mother was an accomplished
painter, Judith was exposed to this craft at an early age. During her early adulthood, she
painted mostly portraits using pastels. Judith chose a career in school psychology which
left her little time to practice her art. After retiring six years ago, she renewed her interest
in painting, but this time with watercolors. “I love the translucency, spontaneity and
portability of watercolor, which make it perfect for plein air painting. I also love those
“happy accidents” that occur when one color bleeds into another.
Rosemary Serfilippi, a Northford artist, has had a lifetime interest in art. After retiring from
teaching and interior decorating, Rosemary has had the time to pursue her interest.
Painting in oils, she draws on her experience teaching literature and working as a Master
gardener and interior decorator for her subject matter. Her cats also frequently provide
inspiration. "Cats seem to constantly 'pose' assuming that I'll want to paint them again and
again- and they are right."

City of New Haven Call to Artists
City of New Haven Percent for Art invites artists to register for an upcoming opportunity!
New Haven’s Percent for Art program (est. 1981) requires that one percent of the city's
costs for new and renovated municipal buildings be put towards the purchase of a
commissioned artwork.
New Haven was the first city in Connecticut to enact such legislation. The program has
commissioned over thirty artworks by many of the area’s most talented and inventive
artists, for the City’s public schools, fire stations, parks, libraries, and other public buildings
and spaces.
This upcoming year, Percent for Art will be looking to commission its next site-specific
public artwork for the Helene Grant School being renovated on Goffe Street.
Artworks are chosen through a committee process. The committee reviews the Artist
Registry and chooses three finalists. These finalists are then invited to create site-specific
proposals.
To submit to the Artist Registry, send the below to [email protected] by
January 15, 2015:
1.) Artist Statement, CV, Biography in 1 PDF
2.) 5 images of past work (images must be: JPG, TIFF or PNG; 2MB 5MB) – or – 1 video
clip (clips must be: 1 minute or less; .mov format) + 4 images of past work
3.) Image List (Title, Date, Media, Dimensions)
Artists working in all media are invited to submit.
All artists are eligible, however, preference is given to local and regional artists,
particularly Connecticut-based artists and those working in the New England region.
For more information about the program, visit: http://www.cityofnewhaven.com and for
more information about registering, contact Liz AntleO’Donnell, Percent for Art
Coordinator, @ [email protected].
