We have quickly transitioned back into the normal school routine. Students spend the first week of the year wrapping up their course work and preparing for mid-term exams. Mid-term exams culminated today. During the next five school days, teachers will be finalizing their second marking period grades. Report cards will be available for pick up during Report Card Night on Thursday, January 29, 2015. Teachers will be available for brief conferences between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A large majority of our students were academically successful during the first marking period. They were recognized along with their families through our Honors Breakfast activity. It is our goal to recognize a higher percentage of students moving forward. Please don’t forget that a variety of supports are in place to assist with academic challenges. Some of these supports are provided by our community partners through a series of afterschool clubs and activities. A large number of teachers are available after-school to work one-one with students. In addition, our extended day program will officially kick off during the week of Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Our extended day program will offer tutoring opportunities in the areas of Math, Science, Social Science, and SAT Preparation as well as support with research and accessing a computer. I urge you to encourage your student to take full advantage of these resources in order to start off the third marking period on the right track. The second half of the year tends to be “busy” in regards to our calendar of events. Various special activities take place during this time. For example, we will be presenting our students a series of activities in honor of Black History Month throughout the month of February. The activities will culminate in a school-wide assembly in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, February 26, 2015 (snow date-Feb. 27). On Friday, April 10, 2015, we will be holding Choices Day. This is a day where our entire school population attends a series of workshops which provide appropriate information about careers, life skills and important social issues that will assist them in making well thought out decisions for a successful future. A variety of assessments take place during the second half of the year as well. SAT School Day will occur on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. All seniors will be taking the SAT at Career High School. AP Testing will start on May 4 and will end on May 13, 2015. All juniors will be administered the state mandated SBAC assessments which will require a total of 8 testing hours for every junior. This will be accomplished sometime throughout the allocated testing window, April 27 – June 12, 2015. As of now, we are projecting to administer the various tests during GUIDANCE Department/Scholarship Information Greetings Freshman Students and Parents, Happy New Year! As we are well on our way to second half of the school year I would like to remind students and families how important freshman year is. The grades that students earn their freshman year set the foundation for their high school Grade Point Average (GPA), as well as, the level of classes they will take their sophomore year. It is critical that students complete their assignments on time and turn them in, as well as, seek extra help when needed. Students and parents please check out our extended day schedule for extra help in classes. It is important that students begin to develop good study habits and time management skills to ensure they have a successful high school career. Article: How to Motivate Your Unmotivated Student (CTRL+Click) Scholarship Information: There are three scholarship programs available each year for AFT- affiliated union members and their families -- Click here for information on all three scholarship benefits, including eligibility, instructions, deadlines, and applications the week of April 27th and the week of May 18th. More specific details are forthcoming. Lastly, I want to offer two important reminders which I hope you will discuss with your student. First, attendance to school and ontime arrival is extremely important. Keep in mind that any student with a total of 20 or more unexcused absences places himself/herself at risk of losing credit for the academic year. Second, homework completion is key to practicing content skills and preparing for course assessments. I thank you for your continued support and hope that you will be able to join us during Report Card night. Here are some resolutions your student might consider adopting as goals for this upcoming calendar year. 1. Review notes nightly. It's not enough to just take notes; notes need to be reviewed daily (or nightly), especially in the weeks and days leading up to a test or exam. Using notes for review is one of the chief reasons...
