JANUARY 2015 / ELK CALL
From the Station of Fidelity
My Brothers and Sisters,
Janice and I want to wish you a very “Happy New Year”. We hope that this year is the
best year of your life so far. We hope that it finds you in good health, with security, and
spending it with loving family members. We also hope that we will see you on a regular
basis participating as a member of our wonderful lodge. We hope that you will come and
join us for lunch, dinners, and special events because involved members are the life blood
of the lodge.
December is behind us but what a heartwarming month it was. All of the good things
that our Elks did to help families in need were so wonderful. Our “Needy Children’s Christmas
Party” was a huge success thanks to our Committee Chairman, Leading Knight Mark
Mahoney and his lovely wife Debbie, Mike and Bertha Smith, and the many other volunteers
Exalted Ruler
that showed up to help.
We also had our “Annual Christmas Basket Delivery” event again this year. This event
fed over 200 families that were in desperate need of help during the holidays. A special thank you goes out to my
Committee Chairperson Claudia Richie, who has chaired this event for several years, and all of the volunteers that
helped sort, pack, and deliver the boxes of food to all these families. She is so fantastic at organizing this event.
When you see her, please take a moment to thank her for her service.
I want to thank all of you that brought in toys and gift cards for both of these Christmas events. Your thoughtfulness
and kindness has helped so many families in need.
If you had the pleasure of attending our annual New Year’s Eve Party you know just how wonderful it was. The
food was terrific, the music was great, the service was excellent and the time spent with friends was spectacular. I
want to thank our Entertainment Committee Chairman, Greg Silver, and all of the members in his committee. If you
see them please make sure you thank him for a job well done.
I am looking forward to seeing a lot of our long time members at our “Old Timer’s Night” on Thursday, January
15th. Also, don’t forget that this month has five Thursdays which means that January 29th is “Fun Night”.
May God bless each of you and watch over you daily and God Bless America.

From the Station of Charity
My brothers and sisters, we’ve just ended another year of Charitable good works.
Our success is a direct result of our Emblem Club and the many volunteers who graciously
gave of their time and effort to helping the community and to making our numerous events
throughout the year successful.
A big thank you to Emblem Ladies #279 for making the Elks Memorial a sucessful
event.
The volunteers also deserve our gratitude for the annual food basket drive, as well as for
all the other events they support throughout the year. Because of their efforts many who are
less fortunate than ourselves had food on the table.
Members of Boy Scout Troop #111, students from local high schools and all the drivers
who delivered food to the families’ homes. All our volunteers gave of their time and effort
Esteemed
that these families would have food on the table, that otherwise would not.
But food was not the only thing our gracious volunteers provided. Some toys for small Leading Knight
children were also included in some food bags. Our volunteers provided more than their
efforts. Imagine the smile of a child as he or she unwraps a toy lovingly given by our volunteers.
And many high school students from Garden Grove School District volunteered their community service hours to
make this endeavor a successful one.
As we close out a charitable year of giving, I thank you all for your kindness of spirit. I know that we’ll be even
more successful as we move forward into 2015.
I hope everyone enjoyed Christmas and New Years in the company of loved ones and friends.
In Charity,
Esteemed Leading Knight

From the Station of Justice
2015 Already! I hope you have a Happy and Healthy New Year. We are in the last
quarter of our Elk year. Please continue to support our Elks National Foundation (ENF)
fund.
As of November we have reached $10.19 per capita, two times the Grand Lodge goal of
$4.60. Our total collected to date is nearly two times that collected as of this time last year.
The District has sent a note congratulating the Lodge on a Great Job and thanking us for
helping those less fortunate.
At the beginning of the year District set a goal to have each of the lodges increase their
donation level by 5% and add 5 new members to the Fidelity Club. At this time Garden
Grove is on track to be well above the 5% increase and we have added 6 new recurring
donors to the Fidelity Club. Thank you all for your generosity. For lodges with members
Esteemed
over between 1100 and 1500 we are second in the State, with Orange Lodge having reached
Loyal Knight
a per capita of $14.93.
This year ENF will be giving back $587,620 to the state in State Charities Grant, $445,970
in Special Projects Grant, and $139,670 in Bonus Grant. These grants help fund the Major Project (Purple Pig) as
well as Drug Awareness, Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot and educational programs. ENF will award seventy-one Most
Valuable Student scholarships to high school seniors plus 23 Legacy Awards totaling $376,000. For every dollar
donated to ENF the State receives $1.98 back in these programs.
You can be very proud of the work you’ve done so far this year, not only in donations, but in volunteer hours and
mileage. The Lodge is awesome in its dedication to our charities. If you haven’t found an activity that sparks your
interest yet, please try to attend the Entertainment Committee meeting on the 3rd Saturday of the month, 10 AM. This
group plans most of the activities throughout the year. It is a great way to find out about upcoming activities and is
open to Elks and family members.
Hope to see you in the Lodge soon.

Happy New Year From the Station of Brotherly Love
I hope you all had the merriest of Holidays!
The Needy Children’s Christmas Party at our Lodge was a great success thanks to all
who so generously donated to the effort. There was much merriment for all in attendance,
and of course the kids were excited when Santa arrived. The smiles on their faces were
beyond words. We had a large number of our members, who came and helped, as well as
Boy Scout Troop 111, and Miss Garden Grove and her court. Thank you again for your
participation and help!
As we embark on a new year, let us all commit to helping the good works of our Lodge.
Whether it be inside the Lodge or outside through one of our community programs, get
involved and make a difference.
Ever practice Brotherly Love!

ELK OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY 2015
January 2015’s Elk of the Month has been a very helpful member in our Lodge. He has
always stepped up to help when asked. This Elk, along with his family members have taken on an
assignment that takes time, muscle, and dedication. This member has made sure that on every
patriotic and special holiday, our Lodge honors our country by placing numerous beautiful
American Flags along with flags honoring each military service branches, our serviceman, and our
veterans.
Most recently, he was called at the last minute to respond and decorate the front of the Lodge with all of these
flags during our annual Elks Memorial Service. He and one of his daughters responded within twenty minutes
and posted the flags to honor the veteran Elks who have passed to realms on high over this past year.
I’m proud to name Doug Westmyer, as our “Elk of the Month” for the month of January 2015.

Emblem Club
President’s Message
Happy New Year to You,
I hope you all had a wonderful
holiday season. It is such a busy
time. But, tucked in with all that
busy, and rushing around, I hope
you also found time to relax and
enjoy the peace and fellowship
that comes with this time of year. Emblem Club
The Emblem Club had a
President
wonderful December – our
convalescent home visit went very well thanks to Vice
President Ruthann German. She had quite a contingent of
Emblem ladies who came out to help serve cookies and
punch. And, also sang Christmas carols with the residents.
We were very happy to have been asked to provide
support and cookies (yes, mostly cookies) for the Elk’s
Children’s Party on December 14. Thanks to Louise
Johnston and her helpers for their participation that day.
Our Christmas party on December 17 was lots of fun
as well. Cindy DeCou was the chairperson for this event
and did a great job of organizing. This year the members
were asked to bring cans of coffee to donate to Mary’s
Kitchen. They keep their coffee pots going all day long and,
word is, they go through gallons and gallons of coffee every
day. Thanks to Shirley O’Hearn for the suggestion.
The Emblem Rock-A-Thon will be held on January 10.
Please come support our Emblem Club with sponsorship
of your favorite “rockers.”
In February, the annual Emblem Club President’s
Charity Event is being held February 15. This year I have
selected “Paws 4 Healing” as “My” charity and the
beneficiary of funds raised at this event. Paws 4 Healing
volunteer members and their registered pets provided
animal-assisted activities/therapy services at facilities in
local communities. Their volunteers visit facilities such as
hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, schools,
children’s centers, and battered women’s homes. This is a
wonderful organization that trains and certifies therapy
teams, and coordinates their therapy visit activities. The
cost to train and certify a therapy team is $100. And, funds
raised at our event will be used for this training. I am inviting
all of you to please join us that day. Social hour is 12 – 1,
lunch is at 1:00 p.m., and tickets are $15.00. Flyers will be
posted soon.
Here’s wishing health and happiness to you all in the
new year!

Garden Grove Elks Ride the Dirt
to Feed the Purple Pig
A special thanks to Larry Hoffman
for creating this input.
The Garden Grove Elks again embarked on their
semi-annual “off-road” effort to raise money for their
major project “The Purple Pig,” which represents the
charity to financially aid families who have children with
medical expenses beyond their parent’s financial
capability.
Motorhomes and trailers full of off-road enthusiast
Elks, their families and friends, began arriving at the
California City campsite on Thursday and by Saturday
morning they numbered 37, plus other riders and
families that came just for the day.
They rode in the 10 mile long Poker-run, drawing a
card at each of the four checkpoints along the way and
the final fifth card at the finish line. The game was “High
Low-Poker,” with a winner for the three highest hands
and the two lowest hands. Riders were in all kinds of
vehicles such as little mini-dirt bikes, big bikes, golf
carts, dune buggies, quads, jeeps and others. It was
not a speed contest. Riders were encouraged to slow
down and enjoy the view and the ride. Safety came
first!
Seventy percent of the income went to the winners
and thirty percent to the Purple Pig. All in all, the Pig
was fed $440.00 because most of the winners, our
generous Elks, and friends, donated all or a substantial
part of their winnings back to the project.
A great time was had by all during the four days
which began on Thursday with riding the desert, playing
with their myriad of off-road toys, the huge bonfires
each night, as well as the hors d’oeuvres social on
Saturday after the Poker Run and the huge Do-itYourself BBQ that was set-up for all to use. It was fun
for all, kids through grandparents. This was open to all
Elks and their friends. Camping was free.
Heading-up this event twice each year was Mark
Mahoney and Joe Spychaj; they, with the help of other
Garden Grove Elks, have been leading this semi-annual
effort for many years. The next off-road poker run is
set for March 12 – 15th, 2015. More information about
coming GG Elk poker runs can be obtained by
contacting the Garden Grove Elk-Enders or our
coordinators Mark at [email protected] or Larry
Hoffman at [email protected].

Special thanks to Gary Swinson who has reached Honorary
Founder ($1000.00 accumulative giving). Gary has moved to
LA, but continues to support Garden Grove Lodge and ENF.
NOTE: If you donated with your dues, on line or through
the office, THANK YOU!
This list is for only those who have donated through me.
Our participation has increased, but we are still below the
District Average of 21.99% with a 17.87% (205 out of 1147).
We need a few more first time donors. On the positive side, we
are ranked #3 on the Chairman’s Challenge (Orange is still
#1). To add to this score we need some of the members who
have not given in the last two years to add to their accounts.
Great Progress!
Thank You for all you have done this year!
