notes & quotes IT’S A HOLLY JOLLY BOOK SALE!! It’s the time of year for joy, music, decorations - and shopping! I’m sure you will find some of your needs met at the Friends of TCPL Book Sale. As usual, we have special categories for this season. We have books for adults and children ABOUT Christmas. We have books for adults and children that are in pristine condition (inside and out), that can be used FOR Christmas giving. Unusual this year is some framed art and portfolios of lithographs and prints, Disney for children, classic artists for adults. We have unbound books of Russell, Karsh, Taschen and Ukiyo-e works. We have 14 Calligraphy books, including 5 by Margaret Shepherd and a Sister Wendy History of Painting set. If you are a collector, we have 10 books by Tasha Tudor, and 4 Mary Engelbreit Christmas books. For those of you that like series, we have the books by Sue Grafton (19), Diana Mott Davidson (14), Jan Karon (first 5 of the Mitford series), and Diana Gabaldon (6) and some Anne Perry Christmas books (6). In addition, we have children’s books, board books, pop-up books, touch and feel books, open the flap books, and books with sound. We have a set of children’s classics. For older children, we have a full set of hardback Harry Potter, American Girl paper dolls (Kaya and Molly), and some large size Wizards and Dragons books. We have three Christmas themed puzzles and two sphere shaped jigsaw puzzles. Media this time includes a large collection of operas (video) and DVD sets of Victor Borge. As always, we will have golden oldies movies and TV shows on DVD (X Files, Seinfeld, etc.). We have a Christmas village display at this sale that consists of five ceramic buildings – all with lights to turn on, and with additional trees, fences, and lamp posts. The figures are a Church, the Frost Ice House, a Coffee House, a Coach House, and a Village Christmas Trees’ Store. One has been cracked and repaired. The village will be in the library display window for two weeks before the sale. There are some little gift books good for stocking stuffers and blank journals for writers. Plenty to find especially if you shop our "normal" 65 categories of books. See you there! Adele Needham, Book Sale Chairman Board Members Needed We hope our Friends will volunteer to help with our sales and to come buy books from us but we need some Friends to think about becoming board members. Due to some job changes and life changes, we will be losing some of our dedicated board members. That gives others a great chance to step up and become involved in the Friends organization. I can personally say how my first year serving on the board as secretary has allowed me to appreciate the hard work all our previous members have done to get us to be the successful organization we are today. But to continue to be this successful, we need members to participate in the strategy meetings and day to day workings of our Friends organization. Carol can help to groom a treasurer to fill her position but she will be moving away from Lafayette next year. Our meetings are held the third Tuesday each month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Additional responsibilities are part of each position but can often be done remotely. Please consider a position on the board. The book sales are as popular as ever, volunteers are doing a wonderful job, and we’ve been able to maintain our high level of support for the library. We’ve been doing this for 47 years, and I think we’ve gotten pretty good at it. To prove this point, I would like to show how we compare to other Friends groups. In 2010 an organization called BookSaleFinder surveyed charities who run book sales; a majority of the 979 respondents were library friends groups. Here are a few stats. 10% reported having more than 20,000 books in each sale. We consistently exceed this number with our sales. 7% reported annual sales over $50,000. We are firmly in this category each year. 6% reported online sales over $20,000. We will pass that threshold this year with growth in our online sales. Would you like to know more about what other Friends groups are doing? A survey of Friends groups was conducted in 2010 by the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ATLAFF.) Respondents reported the following as regular fundraising activities. 88.6% Book Sales 47.7% Program Sponsorship (e.g. authors) 45.3% Sale of Merchandise 37.1% Fundraising Events 10% Planned Giving We are definitely in the majority who see the value in running book sales."Sale of Merchandise" would involve running a store, typically inside the library. This is popular with other groups too, but we have made a decision to focus our efforts on selling books at sales. This has worked very well so far. Also note that we have not conducted fundraising events, but this is something many other Friends groups do. Thanks to all our members and especially to our volunteers who have helped us become so successful. We should all take pride in what we have accomplished. If you have questions or comments about these results, please let me know. And as always, everyone is welcome to attend one of our board meetings, at 6:30 pm on the third Tuesday of every month, at the downtown library Larry Records For Sale THERE ARE STILL RECORDS FOR SALE IN TIPPECANOE COUNTY! Although we are not selling records any more, the Friends of West Lafayette Library are still accepting records for their book sales. The records can be placed inside the front door of their library building at 208 W. Columbia St. in West Lafayette. Fall Book Sale Our fall book sale was an excellent one. We brought in $18,744.33 - which included $680 in memberships ($500 on Friday night). We had extra publicity for this sale – radio and TV ads, notices in the smaller newspapers around the area, and even a picture taken Sunday afternoon and published in the Journal and Courier. This was the first time that we had a clearance area – specifically for the withdrawn books from the library. All the books were priced at fifty cents. We sold over half of what we put out. With that success in mind, we decided to include in the future, clearance areas in each book sale as we have room for them. As always, thanks to all of you who donated books, sorted books, helped set up and worked at the book sale, and those who attended and bought lots of books! Adele Needham, Book Sale Chairman Honors Books Benefactor, patron, and life members of the Friends of TCPL are honored with a bookplate in a newly purchased book in the library’s collection. At the end of the book sale back in March of 2000, Diane Muffett took me around the room collecting things from the tables -- back issues of Architectural Digest, old auto repair manuals, needlework patterns, even some romance novels -- and explained to me that we could easily sell many of our left-over items on eBay. By the end of the day she had helped me set up an eBay account and we had listed our first items. A week later we had our first sale -- for $4.25 plus shipping -- and we were in the online sales business! That first year, selling just on eBay auctions, we sold 108 items and had a profit of $1,048.97. In February, 2001, we branched out and added an account on Amazon.com. We began looking carefully at our book sale donations and learned to identify good prospects for selling online: very technical books, unusual items, items of local interest in other localities. What began as a two-person project took on more volunteers and began to need more space --- and the rest, as they say, is history. Tcplfriends, as we are known online, still sells on eBay and Amazon. So far in 2011 we have total online sales of 658 items for a profit of $16,760.87. We've shipped books all over the USA and to such far-flung locations as South Korea, Croatia, Australia, England, the Netherlands, and Italy. All of the bookroom sorters watch for possible online items, and the online office is a busy place on most weekdays as we look up books and decide on prices, write listings, and answer e-mail questions. Rilla Flynn comes in every day to pack and mail the books we've sold -- last Monday she mailed a record-setting thirteen packages! Barbara Prater has set up a spreadsheet program to help us keep track of our inventory and our finances. Barbara also writes a lot of listings for our eBay items. Other current listers and lookers-up include Jane Rutledge, Nancy Gibson, Cherry Delaney, and Jan Cartwright. Jan, Mary Pachmayr, and Adele Needham keep an eagle eye on incoming donations to find the books that will bring us a good price online. Most of our book sale donations still find their way into the quarterly book sales. But we're glad to be able to find a way to make the most of those items that will bring a really good price online. Our average online net per item hovers around $25! Fall Sale Fun As the pictures show, we had lots of books and serious shoppers. We hope to see you at the Holiday Sale.
