How to use this Guide This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2015. Enrolling in units for 2015 1. Read Section 2. ‘Program Maps’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered. A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit. A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit. IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable you to add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates published in the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/273880). “Turnitin” The Faculty of Education and Arts values students’ academic honesty and integrity. (This course may be completed in 1.5 years in the accelerated mode) Course Description This course has as its foundation the conviction that the quality of education in a society is closely associated with the preparation of teachers. The aim of this course is to assist participants in developing professional expertise, attitudes and values that will equip them to develop in others sound knowledge, skills and ideals and a capacity and readiness to undertake responsibilities in the community. Quality of education depends also on teachers being prepared to meet the challenge of continued growth in knowledge, accelerating technological development, evidence-based decision making, social change and heightened community expectations. Successful completion of this course enables graduates to apply for registration to teach in Catholic, state or independent schools in their state. Units may be offered during the day or early evening and if undertaken full-time will average 16 contact hours per week. Prerequisites Applicants must have a three year bachelor’s degree degree/diploma or equivalent with studies that meet the required pre-requisites for entry into Curriculum Studies. Students elect to undertake two subjects from the Curriculum Studies. One subject is deemed the major subject – one that has been studied for three years at undergraduate level. The other subject is the minor area – a subject that has been studied for two years at undergraduate level. The course for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) consists of 160 cp comprised of: Year 1 - 100 cp in common with the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) Four compulsory Education Studies units Four Curriculum Studies units Two (2) professional experience units Year 2 - 60 cp Four Core Studies units including two research units, one of 20 credit points One Elective unit A professional experience program (PEP) either incorporated within the 20 credit point research unit or as a stand-alone unit depending on state-based requirements for professional experience. Mid-Year Entry Applications are accepted for mid-year entry. The course map for mid-year applicants is determined in consultation with the Coordinator. Mid-Year Entry students will complete their Practicum from 21 of July – 15 August. Professional Experience: During your course you will complete: • 60 days supervised practicum • 10 days of school-based learning Students must complete professional experience units during which time they are required to be available full- time. For example, EDFD548 and the two or three teaching methods (Curriculum and Teaching units) must be either completed before undertaking a teaching round or are concurrent units with the teaching round unit. InPlace - Placement Management System for Education Students The Faculty of Education and Arts at Australian Catholic University (ACU) is implementing InPlace, a placement management system which streamlines registration, requests, and allocation of professional and community engagement placements. InPlace will provide education students with greater access to information relating to their Professional Experience placements. Students enrolling in Professional Experience units, with an EDFX, ADFX and SDFX code, will be able to register and access allocated placement records online. Key benefits from InPlace include: Online registration for placements Ease in updating professional/community placement information Ability to receive placement notifications online Access placement allocations online InPlace is based on Student Connect data. You will no longer have to fill forms manually for placements. In order that “best match” placements are made, please ensure that your personal details, including address and mobile phone number is current and up to date in Student Connect. Note: Mandatory documentation such as Working with Children Checks/Police Checks will still need to be lodged in person at your local Professional Experience Placement Office. English Language Requirements IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of 7.5, including an individual score of 7.5 for all tests. Religious Education There are different pathways to qualify to teach Religious Education: 1. Those students with previous studies in Theology are able to enrol in two units of Religious Education as part of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). 2. Students without previous studies in Theology seeking to teach Religious Education as their second teaching method take the two Theology units from the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education and undertake the two Religious Education units from the Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). (Awards: Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)/Graduate Certificate in Religious Education). 3. Students seeking to have Religious Education as a third teaching method are able to enrol in the four units of the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education (two Theology and two Religious Education units). (Awards: Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)/Graduate Certificate in Religious Education). Additional Requirements – Working with Vulnerable People/Working with Children/ National Police Check All students must apply for and obtain background checks as required by Federal and State/Territory laws, including the Working with Vulnerable People check, Working with Children check and National Police check, before they will be permitted to participate in the Professional Experience Program. Information about such background checks will be provided to students by the Professional Experience Office prior to commencing the Professional Experience Program.
