STEWARDSHIP CORNER:
There is a certain urgency in today’s
Gospel as Jesus calls His first
disciples, Andrew and Simon, James
and John. Each one follows Jesus
immediately, unhesitatingly
abandoning nets and boats, father and
fellow-workers. To what is Jesus
calling me 6 at this moment, in these
circumstances? What will I need to
abandon in order to follow Him?

This week, January 25-31, is National Catholic
Schools Week, and we here in the Spires of
Faith certainly have much to celebrate! We are
blessed to have such a great opportunity to give
our children the gift of a Catholic education
within any of our quality, Catholic schools and
Faith Formation Programs. This year’s theme
for the week is “Catholic Schools: Communities
of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” and so they
are. Our elementary schools; Hennessey, St.
Paul and St. Francis Xavier, and Beckman
Catholic High School as well as Faith Formation classes are places where
service of neighbor is fostered, knowledge of the world is taught, and all the
values of our faith is handed on to the next generation. Thank you for supporting all of our children in supporting our Catholic schools, and be sure to thank
also all of the principals, teachers, catechists, staff and volunteers who make it
possible!
Volunteers are needed for the

Paul, Petersburg, and St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville, and also conversations of Fr. Wolfe with area parishioners about their Catholic faith. The
cluster has received several DVD copies to be given out. Anyone who
wishes a copy may stop at the Dyersville parish office and pick one up.
It will be a first come ~ first serve.

Our Schools
From Fr. John O’Connor
(For a 2nd week when the pastor of
Dyersville is lounging in the sun!)
Dear Parishioners:
Many years ago, I worked with a man , John Farnan,
who previous to that had worked at J.C Penney’s and
then at Roshek’s in downtown Dubuque. John had
many words of wisdom and a few “earthie” ones that
we can’t print here but he was a very practical man.
He would always go off on a long lecture when getting
change for various events such as breakfasts, ball
games, etc. He would always emphasize how if you
have nickels, dimes, quarters and one dollar bills you
are in business. If you have a bunch of big bills and
pennies you are going to be out of business unable to
make change before long. Another of his pet instructions to us youngsters was, “People always make a
great show and visit people when someone dies in
their family, loss of husband or wife, loss of a friend.
Everyone shows up. But, he would stress, they not
only need help now, they may need companionship
and a night out or invitation to dinner after the funeral
has passed and all the relatives have gone home. I
am ashamed to say, I am remiss in doing this as I
should. We all get busy with other things, work calls,
etc., etc. Maybe we can review this for ourselves.
This time of year brings out the phone calls, doorbells, letters, from people in need. Some of these are
legitimate, others are “people who have learned the
system.” If your desk is like mine, the desk is piled
with appeals from all over the world asking for money.
Some are good, some are not. We can’t personally
screen all the people. Time does not permit. Be
discrete. There are many local, good charitable
causes---give to them. There are some sound causes
where we know money is spent wisely. Beware of the
groups where a large portion of the money is used for
administration. These are “top-heavy” and frankly you
are not getting much for the buck. Possibly you can
scrape together that extra million for the Beckman
Catholic High School Campaign . I was going to
suggest the “Fr O’Connor Fishing Campaign” but that
probably would not be a good investment.
In addition to what I just mentioned, one of the
unsung heroes for the past number of years , is the St.
Vincent de Paul Society. Year in and year out, they
are there to help people in need, disasters of all kinds
and making a real effort to screen-out the people who
are living on handouts. In following the example of
their founder, they continue to help the people in
need.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: Have you been listening to the news, watching TV, or reading the newspaper? What is
being said about things morally right or wrong? What do they say about God’s view on abortion, capital punishment or
suicide, let alone the abuse of drugs, alcohol, or other things dealing with the use or abuse of our lives? Thank God, we
have a place where right and wrong is being taught, where the rights and obligations of parents are emphasized, and every
person has a goal with God, not just coming to the end of life with no further destiny. Yes, our Catholic Schools do
emphasize our obligations to God, self and neighbor. What would it be like if no one taught the commandments, let alone
our obligation to follow these laws? Thank God for our Catholic Schools. Today, one of the top topics of discussion is
“Bullying”. Are all our students perfect in this regard? No. However, our teachers are teaching the moral consequences of
injuring their neighbor and the obligation to help neighbors. Service to those in need is an essential ingredient of our daily
lives. Pray for our schools, for parents making the sacrifices to give their children a Catholic education, as well as for all the
dedicated men and women helping to teach and financially support our schools.
APPROACH TO COMMUNION: PLEASE REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE SEATED IN THE MIDDLE SECTION OF THE
CHURCH TO APPROACH THE COMMUNION STATIONS BY WAY OF THE MIDDLE AISLE AND RETURN BY WAY OF
THE SIDE AISLE.
PEOPLE
IN THE SIDE AISLES, COME UP AND RETURN BY THE SIDE AISLE.
(SORRY---We had given thought to eliminating two of the cups and stations for distribution of communion. It was very
messy and I am asking everyone to RETURN TO THE FORMER WAY, using 4 cups and 4 people distributing hosts.)
UNTIL THIS IS GIVEN MORE THOUGHT AND PLANNING. I WILL BE INSTRUCTING THE PRIESTS HELPING OUT
THAT THEY SHOULD LESSEN THE AMOUNT OF WINE CONSECRATED AND DIVIDED AMONG THE CHALICES.
