There is no sin in preventing the spread of illness. If you think you may be sick, kindly refrain from receiving the precious blood from the chalice. Fellow worshippers may not want to shake hands at the exchange of peace – take no offense. A nod of the head and a smile is certainly sufficient. Please remind children of these practices as well. February 8, 2015 From Fr. Quint Dear Parishioners: As we anticipate Valentine’s Day, we celebrate World Marriage Day today. We implore God’s blessing upon our married couples and pray for those who are engaged. With the many demands of parenting, at times couples can fail to spend sufficient time nurturing their own relationship. If a husband and wife aren’t good for each other, they won’t be good for their kids. Today, sit down together and look at the photos and/or video from your wedding. Think back to your first date or the day when you became engaged. What drew the two of you together in your relationship? What do you treasure about your spouse today? What lesson do you hope that your kids will take with them as they will likely be married one day? Offer a compliment or two to your spouse and share why you are grateful for him/her. The US Catholic bishops have an excellent website with great ideas for maintaining strong marriages. Visit foryourmarriage.org . If you are experiencing challenges in your marriage, reach out to a friend, relative, counselor or priest. Priests deal with couples before, during, and after marriages and have some wisdom to share. Catholic Charities in Dubuque provides counseling on a sliding fee scale. You can reach them at 800-772-2758. Sometimes couples seek counseling together and sometimes separately. May Joseph and Mary intercede for our married couples and help them to be fruitful in their vocations. • Pray for our fellow parishioners who are serving at our sister parish in Haiti. They will return home this week. • This week Fr. O’Connor will be on retreat. May he have an uplifting spiritual experience. • Wednesday is the feast of our Lady of Lourdes. As we recall the many miraculous healing wrought through her intercession, the church marks this day as World Day of the Sick. We commend our afflicted brothers and sisters to our Lady’s care. • Congratulations to Fr. O’Connor who celebrated his ordination anniversary last week. I think he is now vested in the priests’ pension retirement program! Our Schools !!!!! St Paul ~ ST. PAUL SCHOOL Update your calendars! April 7th and May 22nd are snow make-up days. BAKE SALE: The Altar & Rosary Society will be having a Bake Sale at the parish Fish Fry on Feb. 20th. ON RETREAT---This week a couple of things are taking place. The people at New Vienna are going to refinish the floors in a couple of rooms of the rectory. Because the fumes are very toxic, it is necessary to ventilate while this is being done. For those of you who have been involved with this type of thing you know that the fumes do not leave immediately. One should not live, breathe and eat in the house where this is happening. Therefore, I plan on being on retreat somewhere for probably the week, depending on the drying and ventilation time. Regretfully, Mass will not be offered these days, but I will offer Mass where I am staying. I regret this inconvenience but it is necessary and I need the retreat. If this Mass arrangement is not satisfactory, please contact me to arrange a change. TIMELY ALERT! Lent begins Feb. 18th with Ash Wednesday. Masses and distribution of ashes will be at 8:30 am at Petersburg and 7:00 pm at New Vienna.
