Wow this month is almost over and we have been going all month. We led our first
chapter gathering meeting January 3, 2015 but it was a sad day.
Our member Fumiko Urushima (Sue and Tim Butters Mother)
passed away December 25, 2014 and her service was that day.
Fumi (I called her mom) will be truly missed.
January 9, 2015 was our first social of the year and was at one of
the chapter’s favorite places. The "Great Wall” a Chinese restaurant in Clovis. This was one of Fumi's favorite places to eat and
she always joined the group. There were 8 in attendance but we
did miss Fumi.
January 16, 2015 we went to our Friday night outing at the Triangle Drive Inn in Fresno. Dan Netz started the idea of having a Friday Night Out once a month and as
chapter directors we ran with the idea. The Triangle Drive Inn is a 50’s drive-in with
old 45 records on the walls and ceiling (what is a record?). The hamburgers were
great and the 10 people from our chapter all had a great time.
On Saturday January 17, 2015 was another sad day. The Wolf Pack (eight total) went
to Larry Pickens' funeral in Lancaster, CA. Larry and Donna Pickens were honorary
members of our chapter. Linda and myself have known the
Pickens for about 10 years and Larry will be missed. What a
tribute to a great person. There were so many of the GWRRA
members and friends of Larry Pickens, that it was standing room
only in the funeral chapel. After the service we went to Larry's
favorite place for the memorial lunch. The restaurant was Primo
Cafe and the group filled up the restaurant. The Wolf Pack sends
their love and prayers to our dear friend Donna Pickens.

To keep busy the next stop was our first Team Meeting of 2015, January 20 at Brooks
Ranch. The team meeting is open to all members and there was 13 in attendance. At
the team meeting we talk about issues and ideas to make our chapter run better.
Next is the California Chapter Conference in Bakersfield, CA January 24, 2015. We
will be going early Saturday morning and spending the night. The California Chapter
Conference is an all chapter workshop event where the District Directors present their
ideas for the year.
In February we will be going to the first Chapter Event in Covina, CA February 7,
2015 and our next gathering will be on the second Saturday of February (February 14,
2015).

I would like to thank all of you for the support you showed with the passing of Fumi
several weeks ago. I know many of you met her at one time or another at our socials
or at the Christmas party. She was very quiet and smiled a lot. What many of you
may have not known about her.
Fumi spent most of her life in California, either in the valley and Huntington Beach.
During the war her family was sent to Arizona at the internment camps. After the war
they returned to Del Rey and then moved to Sanger where she married George.
George opened a grocery store on the corner of McCall and Kings Canyon in 1948.
We received many letters from people that had fond memories of that store. The
memories as a child coming to the store with their parents to get a dime soda and Fumi handing out penny candy to all the kids. George would be behind the meat counter
cutting meat and smoking his pipe. Five or six people would be sitting in the back of
the store all talking to George in several languages at the same time. George spoke
about 5 languages pretty well. Fumi also spoke Spanish as many of her customers
were farm workers. Both Fumi and George were generous people. When some of
their customers were going through a tough time and may have lost their job, Fumi
would insist they come in a get food to feed their family and pay them when they
could. They were both kind and caring people. I for one will miss them.
Again, thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Goodbye To A Dear Friend
Last month was an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows. First, California felt the loss of
one of our most beloved Life Members with the unexpected passing of Larry Pickens. Then
there was the absolutely perfect memorial service at which over 200 GWRRA members attended. It was beautiful to see so many members come together from all over the Region to
celebrate his life and to show his wife, Donna, so much love and support. As your District
Directors, it was truly one of our proudest moments as we saw such an outpouring of love and
respect for a friend and family member. Later that week, Larry was laid to rest at the Riverside National Cemetery in a solemn ceremony as only the military can do. We can truly say
that there is a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.
Two days later, most of the same people gathered in Bakersfield for our annual Officer’s Conference. Deputy Directors Anita and J.R. Alkire were there to install Mike and Barri Critzman
as our new Motorist Awareness National Directors as well as Mike and Ruth Burke as the new
Region “F” Educators. That evening, most of the attendees gathered in our suite for a party
that ran until the wee hours of the morning. I would like to provide more details of that event,
but we promised everyone there that what happens in Bakersfield stays in Bakersfield so if
you want to know what really goes on you will just have to attend next year.
This month Chapter CA1-I kicks off our rally season with their annual Valentine’s Day run,
this year it is a full week before Valentine’s Day so it will not interfere with your personal Valentines celebration. So please come out and support chapter CA-1I on February 7th at Bert’s
Mega-Mall in Covina. We will again announce the winner of this year’s Chapter of the Year.

This article is a continuation of the one I've been writing for the newsletter. There will be one more segment
next month.
Hand Signals
Certain hand signals are optional in group riding: turn signals on the bikes ahead will usually advise a rider without a
CB that a turn is coming up, for example, and hand signals in a turning situation may actually add to the danger for
some. However, other hand signals are extremely helpful to the rider who has no other means to communicate.
The most important two hand signals for a non-CB equipped rider are these: pointing to an obstacle in the road, warning the rider to avoid it; and pointing to the tank. The rider who has no CB should be advised that, no matter what his
reason, if he points to the tank on his bike, he will be telling those following him (especially the Drag or Tail Bike)
that he needs to stop as soon as possible. This may be because he needs fuel; because he wants to make a “potty stop”;
because he is having a mechanical problem; because he is having a crisis of confidence; or for any other reason at all.
Such a signal will be relayed to the Lead Bike. If a convenient place is available, the Lead Bike may orchestrate a stop
by the whole group. If not, the affected bike can count on the Drag Bike to stop with him to try to help him.
Other hand signals may be useful to bikes not equipped with a CB during a group ride. These include:
 Back off – Palm of let hand shown to group, pushing motion toward rear of bike
 Ready to ride – “Thumbs up” high enough in air to be visible to Lead Bike
 Single-file formation – One finger or flat hand points to the sky on top of the helmet
 Slow down – Left arm is held out straight, then goes up and down
 Smoky alert (police or emergency vehicles) – Hand taps top of helmet several times
 Speed up or close ranks in formation – Left arm makes “windmill” sign
 Staggered formation – First finger and little finger point to the sky on top of helmet (“Horns” sign)
 U-turn – Left hand makes circle in air over head
Universal ‘Caution/Warning/Danger’ Signal
Though it is not, yet, a universally agreed to signal, it should be. That is, whenever a rider observes a potential threat,
or wants to announce that he may need to change speeds quickly, that rider is obliged to tap his front brake lever twice
in rapid succession.
Any rider following that bike needs to do two things when he observes that signal:
 slow down in order to widen his following distance
 repeat the signal to insure that bikes following receive the warning
In the event that no emergency or rapid speed change is needed or occurs within a minute or so of seeing that signal
then all bikers can assume the potential emergency has passed and can resume normal speeds and spacing. Nothing
was lost yet everyone took defensive postures, just in case. That, after all, was the purpose of the signal in the first
place.

Exceptions to Normal Guidelines
The often-heard rule, “Ride Your Own Ride”, means that any guideline for group riding can and should be ignored
when it doesn’t make sense. Determining whether this is the case and acting prudently is each rider’s individual responsibility at all times.
Under normal circumstances, the Lead Bike will choose a lane, will determine the speed at which the riders are to
travel will suggest the formation which makes maneuvers most safe, and will navigate.
Common exceptions to these guidelines occur with a rider who is not yet experienced with group riding. If a maneuver looks too dangerous or awkward for the new rider to complete safely, he or she should do what he needs to do to
protect himself and avoid an accident. This may mean passing up a turn or taking it very slowly, or parking somewhere not with the group, or going more slowly through a curve than the riders ahead of him.
Each rider commands his entire area within a lane and may move to left or right in it as required.
Another exception: the Drag Bike may not travel in the same path as the rest of the group. If, for example, a two-lane
road is narrowing so that a lane is about to be lost, the Drag Bike will frequently “close the door” by moving out of
the group’s staggered formation into the lane which is soon to disappear. This is to prevent a four-wheeler from trying
at the last minute to pass part of the group and then have to cut into it when the pavement runs out. Even if the riders
near the back of the group observe that the Drag Bike is no longer in the position where he has been riding most of the
time, they should maintain their own place in the group.

January is just about over with and a new month will be here before we know it! I can't believe how quick the past couple of years have flown by! With the new year - comes
change... and maybe a little less stress... taking over as the Treasurer (once again) is something I can handle...and enjoy doing. Oh yeah, I forgot, I am currently (temporarily) the
Chapter Store person also....so, if you think that is something that you would like to do, let
Larry know, it's real easy, just bring some of our inventory to the meetings, if a purchase is
made, fill out a receipt and hand it over to me so I can make the deposit. Easy! We have
some cool stuff in inventory, shirts, hats (we would like to order more if there is enough interest), pins, patches, travel mugs..
The January gathering started off just right! I won $65 with the 50/50 drawing!! Yay
me! That was fun, lets see if we can do that again.............fun money for Disneyworld....thanks
everyone who pitched in!
Hopefully this years fund raisers will include a brown bag auction, that is always fun and
the Chapter brings in lots of $$$. Don't forget your Savemart Shares card, also good at
Food Maxx - every quarter the Chapter receives a check - free money! Stuff like this and
our fund raisers help pay for special outings - like Ice cream runs, or paying for your Christmas Party meal....
So, let’s have a great year!!

Where: Todd’s Cookhouse Bar-B-Que – Clovis, CA
Todd and his wife Alice ran the Todd’s Cookhouse in Oakhurst for many years. They have now renamed the Oakhurst location Alice’s Cookhouse and Todd has just opened up a Clovis location.
The initial reviews on Yelp look good. Reviews report the Food is spot on and the service is improving over the first day’s soft opening.
I have stopped several times in Oakhurst at the original location. It is small and cramped but good
food. Service and some menu items were a bit inconsistent at that location but over all a very good
Bar-B-Que. If you like good Southern Cat fish this was very well done at the old location.
Meals run $11 to $30. Sandwiches and multi-meat plates are the standard fare. They a great Bread
Pudding and I think something for every appetite.
They are located on Clovis avenue between Shaw and Barstow avenues, just south of Old town
Clovis.

Happy New Year to one and all!
This month I want to talk about one of the perks of GWRRA membership that I actually got to use.
On Christmas Eve my husband and I got in my car to go run some errands. As we were driving
down the road the check engine light came on and the car started to kind of vibrate. So we pulled
over and looked in the car manual. The manual says “do not drive car and to call mechanic. “ Since
cars are so computerized now I was really worried that this was a very bad thing and I was going to
be out big bucks. Christmas time is not a time I want to be dealing with car repairs or anything like
that. So…. we limped home and called our mechanic (happens to be our son).
We were told that the car should be towed to the dealership. So Friday we got out our Towbusters
Plus card and within minutes (probably half hour at the most) we had a tow truck and were on our
way to the dealership. I was totally impressed at how fast they (Towbusters Plus) were able to get us
taken care of. It would have probably been faster if it had been an emergency (they did ask if we
were ok and if it was an emergency). The car was fixed fast and it didn’t hurt the Christmas budget
too much. So I can say first hand that having Towbusters Plus is a great thing and really gives me
peace of mind.
I also wanted to say to those of you who missed it, the gathering at the Machado house for New
Years Eve was fun. David, Diane, Shirley and Teri played a game of Mille Bourne (it’s a card game
where you try to reach 1000 miles and everyone tries to stop you with flat tires and the like) . Teri
won and she had never played before. Yay Teri! Then we played a game called Balderdash. It was
a riot. You have to make up definitions to words (mostly words we never heard of) and mixed in
with the made up definitions is the real definition. It is more fun to play than it is to explain. I
laughed until I cried.

Where: Casa De Fruta
Duration 5 hours – give or take
We will leave right after the meeting. Our ride will take us out Hwy 180 to Mendota. Up Interstate 5 to Hwy 152 and on to Pacheco Pass to
Casa De Fruta. They have a nice picnic area and Restaurant/Snack bar so we can have a Picnic lunch. The store features Candies, Ice Cream
and Fudge. They also have a Wine shop and a Fruit Stand. We can buy our sweets a sweet!.
Feb 21st Ride to Mariposa – Via Ben Hur Road
Bad Weather postponed this ride in December, so we will try again.
When: Feb 21st
Leave: 9:00 AM - Starbucks – River Park.
Where: Mariposa and Oakhurst
Duration: 3 to 4 hours
We will ride up 41 to Hwy 145, over to Hensley Lake, on to Raymond and up Ben Hur to Mariposa.
Hwy 49 will take us to Oakhurst and back to Fresno from there. A lunch stop is optional and we can discuss it at the ride meeting. With all
the rain we had the hills should be all green and lovely.

I find myself writing these earlier and earlier each month. I’m not quite sure why I’m in such a hurry to
wrap up my monthly “to do” list but maybe it’s because I enjoy it. We all need to find something we enjoy
doing because I don’t think we are meant to vegetate in front of the tube.
For my wife, as most of you know, it’s her hobby/job of embroidery. I’m rather certain that her monetary
compensation doesn’t come close to the amount of time and attention to detail she spends on each project.
The only real reason for her to do it is that she enjoys doing for others and this exercises her talents.
That’s something I think we should all strive for, to find something to do that we enjoy because it exercises
our own innate or learned abilities. Giving back can be its own reward as well. So by now you’re beginning
to wonder “Where I am going with all this jabber?”
Consider volunteering to help out with the Chapter. There are so many things that you can do to help and it
turns out, are fun! We need a Sunshine person. That person gets to recognize all of our members who are
having a birthday and/or anniversary each month. They make sure new members or potential members feel
welcome. A pretty simple yet vital job.
Another job that may be available is Assistant Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinator. This person
assists the MEC in keeping track of our members and making sure they all know how much they’re appreciated. The MEC’s are always looking for ways to make being a member rewarding.
Yet another job would be to run the Chapter Store. You would need to bring a few things to sell at the meetings and keep track of what we have in stock.
So don’t be shy, get involved with your chapter. Tell Larry you’d like to help out and where you think
you’ll fit in. This chapter can only be as good as you make it to be.
