Kathy and I hope that you, your family, and your friends had a great Thanksgiving holiday again this year. We have lots of things to be thankful for again this year – among them are happiness and health, good friends and family. Now we’re steaming full speed into the Christmas holiday season – where did this year go? I know for one, we certainly didn’t get nearly the amount of riding in this year as we have in years past. It just seems like the summer was a flash. Speaking of the Christmas holidays, we hope that you will help out supporting the Peet’s Coffee care packages for our troops in the Middle East this year. This is a great way to send a small bit of cheer to our service men and women who are overseas away from their families and loved ones. There are more details in the flier within this newsletter. This coming Saturday evening, we’ll be enjoying a great Dinner Theater performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Riverside Dinner Theater. We have 41 people signed up and attending – a great turnout! We’re sure everyone will enjoy the dinner and show, and if you’re not joining us, you’ll be missed! The Bull Run News Please don’t forget our monthly Chapter Social Gathering this Sunday, December 14th. There will be a very short business meeting and then some fun Christmas festivities, including games, a secret Santa gift exchange, a tacky sweater contest, and fun, fun, fun. Please try to come and join us! On New Year’s Day, please don’t forget the Manassas Honda Riders Club annual Polar Bear Breakfast and Ride at the Yorkshire Restaurant on Route 28 North (Centerville Road). Come and enjoy a nice breakfast starting at 8AM, 50/50 drawing that is usually VERY large, and a nice New Year’s Day motorcycle Ride leaving around 10:15AM to start the New Year out right! Lastly, Kathy and I are in work to transition our Chapter Director duties to Deb and Jerry Keys. The actual “change of command ceremony” is scheduled to take place at the monthly Chapter Social Gathering on January 11th. Please plan to come show your support for our new Chapter Directors as they start their tenure leading Chapter I. Kathy and I have had a great time these past three years serving you as Chapter Directors. We truly appreciate everyone’s support. We’ll still be around and participating – especially with the rides and helping out where we’re needed. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the newsletter for information on our Chapter events and events with other groups in the area! Kathy and I wish you and your families a very safe, wonderful and Merry Christmas & the best for New Year 2015! The program consists of four levels: Level I, Safety by Commitment Level II, Safety by Education Level III, Safety by Preparedness Level IV, Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness. The intent of the program is to provide a safer motorcycling environment by reducing injuries and fatalities, and increasing skills and awareness. We all know that by making the choice to ride, we increase our risk for injury every time we choose to ride. Risk cannot be avoided, but through training, preparation, and knowledge, we can better understand and mitigate our risk. The only cost associated with the program is the cost for patches. Our chapter has chosen to provide levels patches to participants at no cost. In Level I you as a rider or co-rider commit to practice safe motorcycle operation whenever you ride. This simple start begins to make the roadways safer for all of us. There is no mileage requirement for Level I. You can track safe miles since joining The Bull Run News GWRRA in 5,000 mile increments which can be updated annually. In Level II (Tour Rider/Co-Rider) you commit to being a safer rider by taking approved motorcycle riding courses every three years. This creates a safer environment and increases our knowledge and skills. Co-riders can take two-up courses to advance up to level two. Level II Requirements are: a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co-Rider certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider Course. This level also requires 5,000 safe miles since joining GWRRA. In Level III (Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider) you commit to increase safety through preparedness. Level III members must be currently certified in CPR/First Aid and carry a first aid kit on their motorcycle with them for use in the event of an accident or emergency. Level III members must also have taken a Motorist Awareness Seminar. Level III Requirements are: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training, & MA seminar The final step is Level IV (Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider) in which you provide enhanced commitment to safety by taking both CPR and First Aid. They must also have 25,000 safe miles since joining GWRRA and be committed to riding with the “Proper Riding Gear” at all times (ATGATT). Level IV Requirements are: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to riding with "Proper Riding Gear" at all times. Stay safe out there and enjoy the ride. Jerry and Deborah Keys Chapter Educator 5 Chapter I December 2014 Cold Weather Riding Safety Tips We think it’s safe to say that we all believe riding motorcycles is fun, however that “fun” is diminished if we are not comfortable (too cold, too hot). Since it’s not going to be hot anytime soon, here are some “Words of Wisdom” for cold weather riding. The obvious option for cold weather riding is to use heated clothing. This may be cost prohibitive if you don’t use it enough to get your money’s worth. If you choose the non-heated route, most “experts” in the area of outdoor apparel suggest the layering method with the fabrics closest to your body proving a wicking ability to get the moisture away from your skin, and outer layers providing a waterproof/windproof layer. Also if you have not tried it and get those nasty cold feet, use a thin pair of sock liners (generally synthetic) in combination with a wool or other outer sock to allow for the same wicking ability. The layering also allows for shedding portions to be more comfortable inside venues. A balaclava is also recommended as a piece of clothing (you know the popular face covering worn by bank robbers and etc). They make a version that is very thin on top to be used in conjunction with a helmet. It is important to not inhibit your ability to see and/or operation your motorcycle controls. Using these tips should keep you nice and toasty and will allow you to “enjoy” the ride. Jerry (I'm not cold) Keys The Bull Run News MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT OFFICERS Thanksgiving was wonderful; now we want tp wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone... Everyone is looking forward to our Christmas Get-Together at Riverside Dinner Theater in Stafford, VA., on Saturday evening, December 13th. The show will be "It's a Wonderful Life". This is an old Christmas Classic that we're sure to enjoy. We will have a Christmas "Secret Santa" Gift Exchange at our Sunday Social Gathering. We drew names at our November Gathering and will also have an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" contest. Well, we won't worry about winning this contest. We don't have Christmas sweaters. Please welcome Joseph and Brenda Aquila, friends of Mike & Tim. They invited them to come to our Gathering. They couldn't come last month, they had a previous engagement. Also welcome Jim Armstrong, Carl Armstrong's brother if he comes. Jim, Mike, Tim & I attended Chapter F last month. I won the 50/50 and Tim won a gift certificate for a free breakfast that required them to return. Chapter I Rocks. If you see your name on the GWRRA Anniversary attachment for December, Congrats to you. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Ann & Jim Peterson- MEC's 6 Chapter I December 2014 The Bull Run News GWRRA Membership Anniversaries December 2014 ARLEEN SCHADLE 7 Chapter I December 2014 The Bull Run News 8 Chapter I December 2014 The Bull Run News Charity Corner –December, 2014 Make a difference and share a cup of Joe with a soldier !!!! Send a “piece of Home” to your favorite Soldier for the holidays ! Peet’s Coffee in Fairfax, Virginia is collecting scarves, socks, protein bars, Sudoku, Crossword books, etc to send to our US Troops for the Holidays. Also being sent is Holiday Blend coffee. Caribou Coffee (now Peet’s) last year donated over 600 lbs of coffee alone from this region. We're expecting to match that plus more this year with Peet's Coffee (since Caribou transitioned to Peet's in May 2014).
