TechTips for Wampus TechSmart is a program by the Byram Hills PTSA to provide information, programs and resources to help families navigate parenting issues related to the internet, media and technology. January TechTip – Photo Geotagging. Many adults and children use their mobile devices as a camera which may be set to ‘geotag’ or pinpoint the exact location the photo was taken. Some people want to disclose their exact location, but that does not mean that you or your kids have to. Here are ways you can disable photo geotagging: · iOS (iPhone, iPad, iTouch): in Settings, go to Privacy / Location Services. Turn off Camera and any other apps for which you do not want locations specified. If your device asks “Camera would like to use your current location” select “Don’t Allow”. · Android: Start camera app, on menu go to Store Location and make sure it is turned OFF. · Note about Instagram: Photos posted on Instagram may be geotagged to your home address or other private location. If your Instagram account is PUBLIC, anyone may click on a geotagged photo to see precisely where it was taken. If Photo Map is enabled on your profile, you may select which photos to include in your Map by selecting Edit in the top right of your Photo Map. Deselect images to permanently remove their geotag. Communication is one of the most important aspects of parenting in the digital age. Speak regularly with your children about safe, appropriate and responsible use of technology. A CAN’T MISS EVENT! - What do parents need to know about Instagram?
Facebook? SnapChat? Yik Yak? YouTube? Minecraft? And more…
In today's digital world, keeping up with social media, apps and online gaming is one of the biggest
issues facing parents. Using his own unique brand of humor, Josh Gunderson explains popular sites,
apps and games so parents can better understand WHAT kids are doing online and HOW parents can
encourage safe and responsible behavior. Parents will leave with a better sense of how kids are utilizing
popular sites and with the tools needed to promote a positive digital experience.
