It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co NEW PARISHIONERS St. Mary Magdalene welcomes all newcomers to our Parish Family. We would be honored to have you as a member. Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). Gospel — The people were astonished at Jesus’ teaching; he taught them as one having authority (Mark 1:21-28). All rights reserved February 1, 2015 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled OI (for Oleum Infirmarum), is often reserved with chrism and the oil of catechumens in an ambry. An ambry is a cabinet, often beautifully ornamented and kept near the baptistery in the church. Olive oil, with no fragrance added, is blessed at the Chrism Mass in Holy Week by the bishop, although there is now a provision for a priest to bless oil if none is available. This restores to our Latin Rite practice a tradition never lost in the Eastern tradition, in which priests consecrate the oil of the sick, even at the sick person’s home. Any vegetable oil may be used now, since olive oil is difficult to obtain in some places. Many priests keep a small supply of oil close at hand in a small metal tube called a “stock.” In the former rite, every sense of the body was anointed, accompanied by a prayer for forgiveness of sin. So, the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands, and feet were all touched. Today, this is simplified to an anointing of the forehead and the hands, but generally today the oil is used more lavishly, and the symbolism of touch so central to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest will invite everyone present to join in the “laying on of hands.” Sick persons are often pushed aside or feared in our culture, and to be reverently touched in love can be a profound experience of God’s healing, forgiving, accepting presence through the ministry of the Church. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Sunday, February 1st, after the 8:00 AM Mass. This meal is served free of charge by the Men’s Club in appreciation of parish support. Parish Council Elections 2014- There is one opening on the Parish Council. Thank you to Joey Smith for his leadership over the past 3 years. If you would like to learn more about how the tuition assistance process works, or would like a tuition assistance packet – contact Ashley or Keith at Owensboro Catholic Schools - 270-686-8896. Applying for tuition assistance does not commit you to enroll – it simply gives you additional data in order for you to make an informed decision. Tuition assistance forms that are turned in by February 13, 2015, will participate in the initial aid pool. This is when the majority of tuition assistance will be awarded. February 3, the memorial of St. Blaise. However, Blessing of throats will be conferred after all the Masses this weekend. The custom began in the 16th century, although Blaise lived in the fourth century. He was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia who, according to legend, saved the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone. He is now the patron saint of all who have diseases of the throat. Join us and receive a blessing of your throat as a sign of God’s care for his people. Palm needed… Please bring your blessed palm back to church for making of the ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday. 4 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) February 1, 2015 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Parish Religious Education Program NOTE: PREP is “off” this Sunday, Feb. 1, for the Men’s Club parish breakfast, and also off next Sunday, Feb. 8, for Confirmation. We resume sessions on Sundays, Feb. 15th and on Feb. 22nd. PREP is what we call our faith formation program for children, Kindergarten through 7th grade. This is generally for children who attend public schools, though all children are welcome. All parish 8th graders are in Confirmation preparation, which is a separate program. After Confirmation, involvement in the parish youth ministry helps to serve the catechetical needs of all our children, post-Confirmation through high school. We have both middle school and high school youth ministries. The community that is built through our youth ministry here extends beyond their school affiliations, and creates lasting friendships and close ties to their Church Home. We want our children to “keep the Faith.” That does not end with Confirmation, or with graduation. They can make connections NOW, through parish involvement, especially in youth ministry, that can keep them securely anchored through the tempest storms of college and young adult life. If you have a middle and/or high schooler at home who is NOT coming to parish youth activities, please ask them to try it out. Sometimes, it is easy to overlook the great treasures that are right in front of us. ASH WEDNESDAY is Feb. 18!! Can you believe it? Here are a few interesting notes about the day to brush up our knowledge (and be ready to answer any questions non-Catholics may have): Lent consists of the forty days before Easter. In the western Church, we skip over the Sundays when we count the days of Lent, because Sunday is always the joyful celebration of the Resurrection. Therefore, the first day of Lent in the western Church is always a Wednesday. Lent officially ends at sundown on Holy Thursday, with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. From Biblical times, ashes were a sign of remorse, repentance, and mourning. Today, someone might wear a black armband to signify that they are in mourning; back then people put ashes on their foreheads. During Lent, ancient Christians mourned their sins and repented of them, so it was appropriate for them to show their sincerity by having ashes on their foreheads. The custom has persisted in the church as secular society has changed around us. Traditionally, the ashes for the Ash Wednesday service come from burning the palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration. Old palm from past years can be brought to the parish for burning during the weeks before Ash Wednesday. 5 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) YOUTH MINISTRY Upcoming Youth Dates February 1– No Youth Group (Super Bowl Sunday) February 8– Middle School Youth 5:00-6:00 PM; High School Youth 6:30-8:30 PM February 15– No Youth Group (3 day weekend with Presidents Day) February 20-22– TEC at Gasper River February 22– 6:30-8:30 Middle & High School Bowling Night 6:30-8:30 PM at the Bowlodrome February 1, 2015 From the Youth Minister: I have learned by talking to parents and youth, that I sometimes get to see the best version of our youth. It’s natural to be grumpy with our families from time to time, and for parents to worry about how their kids act around other people. With that in mind, I absolutely saw the best version of our youth 2 weeks ago at the Confirmation Retreat!! One of my favorite parts of doing what I do, is to be able to watch kids break down walls and barriers, being open to one another, and forming a community within itself. Let me explain… Our Confirmation Class of 7-8 grade students came together to play together, share experiences, and pray together. I have had several years worth of observing things in our kids through youth ministry and teaching Confirmation– please let me share what I have witnessed. Sometimes, there is tension when building community amongst a group, especially when you have students from Catholic Schools and Public Schools coming together. Sometimes kids from one side or the other feel as though they don’t belong to the group, or that it is just not their ‘thing,’ or that it is just not for them. I have seen Catholic school kids not participate in the parish because they think they learn everything that they need at school. I have seen Public School kids not participate because they are busy with other extracurriculars. I have also experienced both groups coming together and form a great community. The reality, is that after high school, you no longer are in that ‘school group.’ The St. Mary Magdalene Parish Community though, will always be here. This year, that was not the case at all! The thing that I witnessed that clicked with these students, is that they are a community in itself and they come together to form part of the St. Mary Magdalene Community– not just individuals or this school vs that school– but there was truly a sense of community amongst themselves. They talked about how they would like to stay a group. The easiest way for that to happen, is through the youth group– there is a community that is continually growing and being integrated into the larger SMM Community. They are not the church of tomorrow as some say, but rather they are the young church of today!! Western Kentucky Teens Encounter Christ is scheduled for February 20-22, 2015, at Gasper River Retreat Center, Bowling Green. This TEC is for High School Seniors & Juniors. Adults who have completed diocesan Safe Environment Training and background checks may observe the weekend. This 3 day retreat focuses on the Paschal Mystery and how we live that out in our day to day lives. It is for those persons who are searching for goals, for acceptance, for meaning, for community, for values, and for God. For weekend applications, please see Crissy, or go to www.wkytec.org. The cost is $60.00 and a $10.00 deposit is required two weeks before TEC begins. This retreat sometimes tends to fill up fast, so get your registrations in soon!! 6 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) On behalf of Owensboro Right to Life, I'd like to share my appreciation for all the people who were so generous with their donations on the Sanctity of Human Life Sunday collection.
