All youthful activity being covered this week!! Christ the King Friday morning Mass 9.30am Friday 6th February: the regular Friday morning Mass will have added excitement as it will also be the Opening Year School Mass for the Christ the King School as well. As the psalm response says for that day, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” May that be so for our students for the year ahead and beyond. Liturgical Planners: the regular parish Liturgy Team meeting is on next Saturday morning 7th February, 10am at the parish office. The season of Lent is close at hand, and planning for Holy Week and the Easter Triduum is already underway. An exciting meeting is sure to unfold. Rest in Peace: On Friday 30th January at Christ the King there was the Funeral Mass for an affectionately loved Clare Foster. Clare was heavily involved in parish prayer groups, Catholic Women’s League, the Associates of the Presentation Sisters and the Christian Brothers’ Associates to name but a few. This coming Friday 6th February at 11am there will be a Memorial Mass for Barry McMahon. Barry lived in Sydney and was brother to parishioner Pat McMahon. “In Christ the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned, that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.” Preface I for Funeral Mass. The prayers of the parish are also with their families as they mourn the death of their loved ones. May Clare Foster and Barry McMahon rest in the peace of Christ. Welcome: last Thursday 29th January Rev Andrew Gunton was inducted as the pastor of Oxley Uniting Church. The Catholic Parish of Corinda Graceville welcomes him to our neighbourhood and prays God’s continued inspiration on his fruitful ministry in the area. Parish Calendars are free and available at the doors of the church. Collect a copy and put it up in your house so that you know what is happening liturgically, in the parish, schools, holidays and so on. There is space to add your family activities as well. Get one quick: one month is already passed. Lenten Program: Ash Wednesday is only two and a half weeks away. Time to start planning your Lenten observance. One profitable endeavour is to be a part of a Lenten discussion group. The Archdiocesan program this year, ‘Rich in Mercy’, was written by Archbishop Coleridge. All know what an insightful teacher he is on Scripture. For more information see the note on page 3 of the newsletter. Prayers for God’s help: our world needs it. Please pray for an end to the death penalty across the world. Prayers for mercy for Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan and those in Indonesia under immanent implementation of their death penalties. Prayers also for an end to drug smuggling and drug abuse. Prayers too for the International Day of Prayer against Human Trafficking – see bottom of newsletter page 2 for more on this. Sydney Morning Herald: News Review p31, January 24, 25, 2015. “Jeffrey Fagan, who provided expert testimony during (an Indonesian) constitutional challenge against the drug penalty in 2007, said drug offenders were prone to “hyperdiscounting”. “Their reasoning in the face of threats of harsh punishment is skewed.” If the death penalty did deter drug traffickers, it would suggest that supply would reduce in the particular country, pushing up prices. Drug use would then fall. But a study of the experience of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia between 1999 and 2005, a time when Singapore and Malaysia were executing heavily and Indonesia was not, shows that drugs were significantly cheaper in Singapore and Malaysia. Drug use also rose in both countries and remained more prevalent in Singapore than Indonesia.” It is a complex and multi-layered issue. Illegal drug dealing is a problem governments do need to address. Photocopies of the article are available in the Perspex holders at the doors of the church if you wish to read more. Synod of the Family: From Bishop Brian Finnigan: Dear Bishop, Monsignor, Father and Deacon I encourage you to participate in the preparation for the next Synod on the Family to be held in October this year. The questionnaire has now been uploaded onto our Archdiocesan website, and can be accessed as follows: http://brisbanecatholic.org.au/articles/Vatican-invitation-synod-input-open/ Please contribute your feedback by responding to the survey yourself, and also encourage your community to do the same. The survey is available on the Archdiocesan website, and includes a link to the full document. The survey can be completed as an individual or as a group. Archbishop Mark Coleridge, along with the Diocese of Darwin's Bishop Eugene Hurley, will be the Australian Bishops Conference representatives at the event. Unfortunately the time frame for response is once again brief. Responses must be received by Tuesday 10th February to be included in the collation of responses. As Archbishop Coleridge noted in his most recent Advent Pastoral letter, within the Body of Christ there are many different ways of taking part. "One of them was by responding to the questionnaire at the start of the Synod process. Another is serious engagement with the questions and tasks that will emerge from the Synod's first session," he said. "All who are part of the Body of Christ should pray for the work of the Synod this year and next - that reasonable hopes will be fulfilled and that the Synod will look at marriage through the lens of the Incarnation, balancing fidelity to the teaching of Christ and his Church with a compassionate and realistic response to men and women in need." Yours sincerely in Christ, Bishop Brian V Finnigan, Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Brisbane We warmly welcome into our Parish Family and the Family of God the following children, who will be Baptised this month: Lisa Anika Seifert Camus, Mason William Chounding, Thomas Gregory Noel Christensen, Evelyn Clare Grant, Alice May Hall, Sebastian Tovar Hughes, Portia Aaliyah Stewart We look forward to seeing the newly Baptised and their families worshipping with us each weekend.
